She offered the club s condolences to Phillip and Deidre Tome on the recent death of Phillip s mother. Angela Metcalfe read the FOUR WAY TEST. SECRETARY S REPORT: Alan Sharp (below) (The review of the Club Constitution and Club Bylaws has been undertaken and guided by the 2016 Council on Legislation updates and the District 9700 templates. At its meeting on 8 March, 2017, the Board approved the updated version, which will be considered and hopefully formally adopted by the members at the special meeting to be held on 28 March. Following changes to the Bylaws of Rotary International by the 2016 Council on Legislation, clubs may now determine their own rules on membership while maintaining the long-held requirements of personal integrity and desire to serve the community. Other decisions from the Board meeting were: Increase in the donation to Riding for the Disabled by $1000 to $1500 Support for the application by Kaitlin Salzke and Stephen Dawson from Bush and Campbell to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in Orange Support for RYDA with $200 donation Intention to support a Year 11 student form Kooringal High to attend Rotary Adventures in Citizenship in Canberra with a donation of $600 (awaiting applications from interested students) We are still looking for our pull-up banners: please check your garages! TREASURER S REPORT: Alan Sharp for Darren Verus in absentia Members suggestions for recipients of disbursements from the Charities Account for the remainder of this Rotary year will be welcomed for consideration by the Board. Volunteers are needed to help with parking, drinks, and kitchen. Students from Kooringal High will wait on the tables. Attendance numbers for breakfast: three people just did not show, and three other people apologised after the 10am deadline on Monday (time requirement for the chef to order). It is very disappointing when six out of thirty-four members did not support the Club by complying with the clear expectation relating to apologies. Family and work emergencies do occur from time to time, of course, but for nearly 20% of the members this week? Please save the Club from unnecessary expenditure. Fred Loneragan (right) in his Africa shirt, spoke of the disastrous fire at Imizama Yethu, an urban settlement in Capetown, which displaced thousands of residents from their homes. The Rotary Clubs of Coolamon and Hout Bay have worked together for many years to improve conditions there, particularly the supply of fresh water and Orphan Rescue Kits for schoolchildren. As yet, there has been no request for financial aid from the Rotary network. PRESENTATION: Dave O Grady had the pleasure of presenting a cheque for $2500 to Narelle Heckendorf (left) for use in the Special Care Nursery at the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. This donation was raised through the sales of the Christmas trees in December. Narelle expressed her sincere appreciation. SERGEANT-AT-ARMS: Dennis Blackett What with the football season starting and St Patrick s Day, Dennis had a rich source of fines: Those whose football team lost this week s games David Gilbey for not being in the media this week Dennis told a couple of hoary and dubious Irish jokes about Paddy and his exploits and three Irishmen in a pub. Bruce Spinks (just dropping in with a delivery) also couldn t resist the invitation to tell another Irish joke about an Aussie making himself unpopular in an Irish bar. Val Samuelson cross-fined Ndungi Mungai and David Gilbey for their stylish shirts and Fred Loneragan for his classy belt. Fines Total: $

4 GUEST SPEAKER: Sarah Groves Deidre Tome introduced Sarah Groves, a former Rotary Exchange student to Denmark and a RYLA participant and leader. Sarah balances her part-time work commitments as the Community Engagement Officer at Headspace with her postgrad studies in psychology at CSU. Headspace is a national program funded by the Federal Department of Health to cater for the needs of young people from 12 to 25 years of age. Wagga Wagga Headspace opened in The Wagga Wagga team comprises a doctor, psychologist, counsellor, social worker, dietitian, and access to a tele-psychiatrist once a month. An alcohol and other drugs counsellor will soon commence on a part-time basis. The Wagga team also provides outreach services to Tumut, Tumbarumba, Cootamundra and Temora. Headspace is not a crisis service, but focuses on early intervention for mental health problems before mental illness develops. Clients wait around two weeks for their first appointment, and there is no cost for services. The major presenting issues are depression (28%) and anxiety (22%). Treatment runs for four sessions on the average, and 60% of clients show significant improvement. Another option is eheadspace, which offers online and phone support and information for young people and their carers. It takes out the barrier if young people are not comfortable seeking faceto-face contact. It also offers an avenue for carers to seek advice for approaching their young family member and for starting that often difficult conversation. Sarah has promoted such community activities as stalls at CSU O Week Market Day and in the Marketplace. Youth Week in April (in conjunction with Wagga Wagga City Council) and the Youth Mental Health Forum in June (with government and nongovernment agencies) will be the next major events run to reduce the stigma of mental health concerns and normalize seeking help amongst school-aged and young people. Reilly is walking through a graveyard when he comes across a headstone with the inscription "Here lies a politician and an honest man." 'Faith now,' exclaims Reilly, 'I wonder how they got the two of them in one grave. 2. 'O'Toole and his wife are in bed one night and they hear the neighbour's dog is barking its head off in the garden. Somewhat disturbed by the noise, O'Toole explodes, 'Botheration and that!' and storms off downstairs. He comes back upstairs five minutes later and his wife asks, 'What did you do, O'Toole?' O'Toole replies with a wide grin, 'I've put the dog in our garden so I did, now let's see how they like it.' 5

6 3. Donncha is shocked at finding out all his cows are suffering from "Bluetongue." 'Bejabbers,' Donncha murmurs, 'I didn't even know they had mobile phones.' 4. Gallagher is in Boston and he is waiting patiently, also, he is watching the traffic cop on a busy street crossing. The cop stops the flow of traffic and shouts, 'Okay pedestrians'. Then he allows the traffic to pass. He did this several times, and Gallagher is still standing on the sidewalk. After the cop has shouted 'Pedestrians' for the tenth time, Gallagher approaches him and says, 'Is it not about time ye let the Catholics across?' 5. 'Why do you Irish always answer a question with a question?' asked President Franklin D. Roosevelt. 'Do we now?' came New York Mayor Al Smith's reply. 6. Finnegan sells Michael a donkey, some weeks later they met in a pub in Killarney and Michael says, 'Hey, Finnegan, that donkey you sold me went and died.' Finnegan just sips his Guinness slowly and retorts, 'Bejabbers, Michael, it never done that on me.' 7. Murphy lost a hundred dollars on the Melbourne Cup, a famous Australian horserace. He also lost another hundred on the television replay. 8. Kieran O'Connor always slept with his gun under his pillow. Hearing a noise at the foot of the bed, he shot off his big toe. 'Thank the Lord I wasn't sleeping at the other end of the bed,' Kieran said to his friends in Donegal's pub. 'I would have blown my head off.' 9. O'Gara was arrested and sent for trial for armed bank robbery. After due deliberation, the jury foreman stood up and announced, 'Not guilty.' 'That's grand,' shouted O'Gara, 'Does that mean I get to keep the money?' 10. 'Ah, that was a lovely dress,' announced Colleen, 'and it would have fitted me if I could have got into it, so it would.'
