Principal Pipings Message From the Dean April is the cruellest month, or so goes the famous opening line of poetry. This pops into my head every year as I turn the calendar page from March to April -- perhaps because the April 15 Tax Deadline is looming! This year, of course, saw the cosmic confluence of Easter and April Fool s Day. Our weather can t seem to decide between sixty-degree days or additional snowfall. But now that our Easter celebrations have passed, I hope you can enjoy some recovery time from hectic church schedules and all the extra musical rehearsals that go with it. We should all make it a point to enjoy a little break from our routines. Take the time to do something kind or relaxing for yourself and others. If gardening or yard work are your hobbies, now is the time to indulge. You may take some extra time to read for pleasure (the Newsletter is a good start!), or learn a new piece of music. Check out the enclosed Calendar of Events, and treat yourself to a special concert event in the area. Or make plans to travel this summer -- the AGO schedule of summertime conventions and POEs is also included in this newsletter. Plan to mix and mingle with your LexAGO Friends and other church musicians at our upcoming April 14 program. Our own Owen Sammons will lead us in an organ improvisation workshop that morning at First Presbyterian Church. Owen is known throughout our chapter and region as an extraordinarily talented improviser, and he has graciously agreed to pass along some of his tips to us! I ll look forward to seeing you there. I know we ll all feel uplifted and energized following this program! Also enclosed in this newsletter is our 2018 Election Ballot. The Chapter holds an election of new officers in even-numbered years. Inside, you will find an outstanding Slate of Officers for your approval. These LexAGO Members have agreed to have their names placed into nomination for various offices for the term, and will be serving in leadership roles on the Executive Committee. As such, they will be making important decisions impacting the future direction of our Chapter. We thank each of them for their dedication and enthusiasm. Please submit your VOTE, before the May 2 deadline, to LexAGO Executive Secretary Lynn Vera by one of three methods described inside this issue. It is the right and privilege of all full LexAGO Members (regular, special and young organist categories) to vote for the officers representing YOU! So come on out and enjoy some spectacular playing and, perhaps, pick up some tips from Owen on spicing up your own service playing! As usual, we will gather at 9:30 a.m. for delicious breakfast treats provided by our Hospitality Committee (thank you, Angela and Nancy!), followed by Owen s workshop from 10:00-12:00. At noon, we can all plan on walking somewhere near by for lunch. This one-of-a-kind workshop is NOT to be missed! I ll look forward to seeing everyone there! 3

LexAGO Events Mark Mummert Recital Held at Faith Lutheran March 2 The Lexington AGO is grateful to our Friends at Faith Lutheran for the opportunity to have partnered with them on a fine lecture/recital program on March 2. As part of the Harstad Fine Arts Series, Mark Mummert presented an organ recital of works by J.S. Bach written 300 years ago, around 1718, when Bach would have been 33 years old. Mummert serves as the Cantor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, MA. He has many compositions and essays published by Augsburg Fortress. He shared with me that he would be the incoming Dean of his local AGO Chapter back home, beginning this summer -- a SIX YEAR term! Yikes! After the program, everyone enjoyed a reception, with the opportunity to meet the performer and other concertgoers. Again, we extend our thanks to Tom White and the members of the Board of Directors of the Harstad Fine Arts Series at Faith Lutheran. Donations to the Harstad Series may be sent to the church at 1000 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, KY Upcoming AGO Summer Events Here are the dates for some upcoming AGO Events: Pipe Organ Encounters (POE) 2018 AGO National Convention (for ages 13-18) July 2-6, Kansas City, MO June Phoenix, AZ June Minneapolis, MN 2019 AGO Great Lakes Regional Convention July 8-13 Philadelphia, PA Grand Rapids, MI July Los Angeles, CA July Deland, FL 2020 AGO National Convention Atlanta, GA POE+ (for adults) June Rockford, IL 4

Vote 2018 Report from the 2018 Nominating Committee The 2018 Nominating Committee has been hard at work since February. Committee Chair Jane Johnson was appointed by Dean Larry Sharp, with the approval of the LexAGO Executive Committee, to head this committee, tasked with procuring a slate of officers for the 2018 LexAGO election. Jane named the following members to the committee: Kate Covington, Mark DeAlba, Ted Gentry and Brian Hunt. The Nominating Committee recently reported its recommendations to the EC. In addition to the Slate of Officers (see ballot, below), the Committee suggested combining the offices of Treasurer and Registrar, and encouraged the formation of a new Committee for Membership and/or New Member Recruitment. The LexAGO EC wishes to thank the 2018 Nominating Committee for its efforts and recommendations. Thanks to all who served on this important committee, and thanks to all who agreed to have their names placed into nomination on the ballot! The EC now encourages each LexAGO Member to exercise his/her right and privilege to VOTE! The continued success of our Chapter depends on it. Book Donated to Chapter One of our newest Jubilee Members, Frances Scott, of Elizabethtown, has graciously donated to our chapter a reference text from her personal library. Glory to God: A Companion, by Carl P. Daw, Jr., was published in 2016 and is intended for use with the new Presbyterian Hymnal. It contains a brief history of each hymn and biographical information on the hymn writers. This should be a valuable resource for all church musicians. Frances has made this donation to thank the LexAGO for its efforts to host the recent 2018 January Jubilee. We are quite pleased to list Frances as one of our newest members, and we look forward to seeing her again at upcoming chapter events! Thank you, Frances! 2018 Yearbook Addendum Our 2018 Chapter Yearbook Addendum appears later in this newsletter. The Addendum includes the names and contact information of all 34 new LexAGO Members who have joined our chapter since last fall! Next year s Chapter Yearbook will begin being compiled on/around September 1st. It s never too soon to supply us with any changes or updates to your yearbook entry. 5

Membership Why I Am an AGO Member Lisa Hall I am member of the American Guild of Organists because it gives me the opportunity to meet new colleagues, further my education, and grow as an organist. There are always great concerts and conventions to attend, either in your local chapter, region, or at the national level. As part of the organization, you are a member of a community that helps promote and educates new and budding organists. You are also challenged to grow as an organist through the conventions, concerts, and workshops. The AGO is a great organization to be involved in! Submitted by Lisa Hall, LexAGO Member and Jubilee Cathedral Co-host Don Seevers I have enjoyed the privilege of living in 5 different metropolitan areas as an adult. I went to college and started my music career in Cincinnati, OH, moved to Orlando, FL, Phoenix, AZ, Palm Harbor, FL (Tampa Bay metro area) and now I have enjoyed living in Lexington for almost 14 years. In each of these cities, the arts have been strong and the presence of the American Guild of Organists has also enjoyed a prominent role in the arts and church communities. Even when I was younger and not a part of the Guild, I learned of what they offered through their concert series. As I matured as a musician, I realized that it is important to have the support of others with similar needs and interests. Being involved in the local chapter as a member, and later as a local AGO board member, has provided opportunities for fellowship, friendship and growth as a church musician. It is so helpful to know that others who have similar experiences are just a phone call or an away. Submitted by Don Seevers, LexAGO Member and Jubilee Registrar Why I Am AGO Certified William Webber, SPC, CAGO When I was twelve years old, I was studying organ with Daniel Tilford at Georgetown College here locally. That was my first chapter, the Georgetown College chapter. He told me that I should become certified. Later in life, after my bachelor s degree in music, I felt that I needed to do that to strengthen my organ skills. I began with the Service Playing Certificate (SPC), studying with Gerard Faber, formerly of Asbury College, and finished with the Colleague Certificate (CAGO). To this day, I am still grateful for taking those AGO exams, as my perspective and performance were improved, making me a much better organist and musician. I encourage others to do this. 9

For Fun April Trivia Contest Congratulations (once again) to Mark DeAlba, winner of our March Trivia Contest! Mark seems to be the only one who can spot and/or count pairs of family members within our ever-expanding ranks of LexAGO Members! Mark (once again) discovered and correctly identified three of the four NEW pairs of AGO members related by blood or marriage, following the January Jubilee. They are: Spouses: 1. Jim and Albennia Ladieu, Joelton, TN (Nashville Chapter) 2. Gary and Theresa Pope, Corydon, IN (Southern Indiana Chapter) Father and Son: 3. Charles and David Lamb, Clarksville, IN (Lexington Chapter) Sisters: 4. Betty Wood, Maysville, KY, Ann Stivers, Louisville, KY (Lexington Chapter) Which all goes to show that the LexAGO is still just one big, happy family! Congratulations, Mark! And welcome, all new Jubilee Members! Now, on to the April Trivia Question... Since the March Question seemed to present difficulties for several of you, here s a much easier question for April. Remember, though, you must be the FIRST to submit your correct response to me in order to claim your prize. Q: Who is famous for penning these famous words? April is the cruellest month... GOOD LUCK! Remember -- you can t win if you don t play! Bad Joke of the Month In honor of this month s LexAGO Officers Election, our bad joke features a bumper sticker recently spotted around town (although I doubt that the AGO election was the one this driver had in mind!): Elect a Clown, Expect a Circus! Please submit your Bad Musical Jokes to Larry Sharp or Scott Heydinger. 11
