2 The 5 Talent Academy is a group of like-minded pastors and laity across the Virginia Conference who are committed to learning the tools and techniques to have healthy, fruitful congregations. As a member of this community, you will learn new ways to increase worship attendance, professions of faith, faith development, ministry to the poor, and stewardship. There is no cost to your church to join the 5 Talent Academy, just a commitment to grow in fruitfulness and multiplication of ministries centering on worship, mission, discipleship, evangelism and stewardship. The 5 Talent Academy can help you achieve your church goals by giving you access to inspiring leaders, providing a venue to brainstorm concepts with peers, and offering you resources to help your church multiply its God-given talents. 4 PEER GROUP WORKSHEET 5 Talent Academy Ministry Outside the Walls October 4, 2016 As you respond to today s event, you may use this worksheet to spark conversation about how your church can become more faithful and fruitful. These questions will guide your peer group time. (12:20 12:45 Lunch, 12:45-1:30 Peer Groups) Tell us your name, church, role in your church, and one thing Andy shared that stands out for you. Is there something Andy said that is particularly important to you and you want to talk about during this lunch conversation? How does your church currently recognize and celebrate the culture making that your members do at home, in their neighborhoods, and in their workplaces? What meaningful, material parts of daily life and work are not recognized and celebrated enough in your church? Are there some groups of people (age and stage of life, or with particular vocations/callings) who might feel that their daily life is rarely mentioned or treated as significant? What would it look like to celebrate the image-bearing qualities of their life and work in your church? Where do you see idolatry and injustice in the community you serve examples of people seeking authority without vulnerability, at others expense? 1
5 PEER GROUP WORKSHEET 5 Talent Academy Ministry Outside the Walls October 4, 2016 Where would you personally most like to be a part of addressing idolatry or injustice in your community? Where is a place in your community that God is calling you to go but would require some sacrifice to get to? What structures would you need to put in place to offer the accountability to go there? How do you see God moving in your local church and community to bring a spirit of flourishing? How might you engage in such a way that you could be a fuller participant in that flourishing? Is there a question you would like to ask Andy? What are your take-aways from our time of worship and Bishop Lewis message this morning? 2
6 Further Reading and Resources on Culture and Calling 5 Talent Academy October 4, 2016 Amy Sherman, Kingdom Calling: Vocational Stewardship for the Common Good (InterVarsity, 2011). A wide-ranging and practical exploration of how our callings can serve others and help our communities to flourish. Tom Nelson, Work Matters: Connecting Sunday Worship to Monday Work (Crossway, 2011). Written by a pastor who realized his seemingly thriving church had not little to say about his members work lives and decided to learn and change. Steven Garber, Visions of Vocation: Common Grace for the Common Good (InterVarsity, 2014). A more meditative book on vocation by the director of the Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation & Culture. Katelyn Beaty, A Woman s Place: A Christian Vision for Your Calling in the Office, the Home, and the World (Howard, 2016). Based on over 100 interviews with women who work inside and outside the home, a perspective on culture and calling from the youngest ever managing editor of Christianity Today. Andy Crouch, Culture Making: Recovering Our Creative Calling (InterVarsity, 2008). A call for Christians to see themselves as cultivators and creators, rather than critics and consumers, of culture. Andy Crouch, Playing God: Redeeming the Gift of Power (InterVarsity, 2013). A biblical theology of power rooted in creative love and image bearing. Argues that the core distortions of power are idolatry and injustice, and that the longest-lasting form of creative power is found in healthy institutions. Andy Crouch, Strong and Weak: Embracing a Life of Love, Risk and True Flourishing (InterVarsity, 2016). A short, personal look at authority and vulnerability, and how families, communities, and leaders need both to flourish. Made to Flourish: A Pastors Network for the Common Good (madetoflourish.org). A network founded in 2014 that connects pastors who care about work, economics, and flourishing communities. Redeeming Work ( A 6-session streaming video curriculum from Christianity Today based on stories of Christians at work in the world, from auto mechanics to artists.
