4 page march 007 Spotlight: Round Valley Collectiques Christy hardman Times Writer As you may well know, Scipio is not a metropolis. As one man put it, It appears that the primary industry in town is selling gas. But that s not entirely true. On Main Street, across from the Fire Hall, is a two story salt box building that used to be the Antelope Inn. It operated as a hotel/bus terminal for the Trailways and Greyhound north and south routes. Now the building houses an antique store, Round Valley Collectiques, owned by Gary and Monique Hudson. Gary said they still have a mercantile sign up from 90. The sign reads, Sold from Alaska to Australia. The Hudsons have been in the antique business for about nine years since he retired from being a general contractor for mines in the Yukon Territory. You never want to retire from life all the way, he said. I ve always been a collector of odds and ends, so we came out here to Scipio. We had such a big building we thought we d better do something with it, so we decided on an antique store. Gary said that they have redone all of the rooms, but they don t rent them out. We keep them up so the kids and grandkids have a place to stay when they come, he said. Gary said they moved to Scipio because that s where their grandkids are. Gary started with a collection of coins and some license plates, but from there his collections have grown and grown. He said the biggest portion of his antiques come from people downsizing. People move into a smaller house, and they just don t want to move all their stuff with them, he said. One lady said she d had her dishes for 0 years and she d never used them, and she wasn t about to move them again. People usually will haul their things here before they would throw them out. Gary said he s learned a lot through the years. Little by little you learn, but you never really learn everything, he said. One of the things Gary said he s learned is to always be fair. If someone comes in with something that s worth a large amount of money, well, you d better give it to them. That way we can both make a dollar off it. Gary said his collection consists of various kinds of glass, tools, license plates, dishes, traps and some furniture. They carry a lot of old wood doors and windows that are popular in decorating. He also has some quilts from the 800s to the 90s. After a while it gets to be quite a variety, he said. You ve got to have it, because people want it. Gary said that people trade license plates like trading cards, and they re always looking for ones they don t have. The biggest part of the Hudson s business comes from out of town. People that are passing from Salt Lake to St. George make it a point to stop here, or people heading along the back way to the national parks. We have a lot of repeat customers, he said. Round Valley Collectiques is right in the middle of Scipio. Gary said it s about the only other building in town outside the Dairy Queen on the interstate. The store part of the building is all original. We ve left it like it was when it was originally built, so it ll have that same quaint feel, the same plaster with cracks in it. It s really got a fun character, he said. Steve Hardman / The Deseret Antique Times Round Valley Collectiques in Scipio is housed in the old Antelope Inn. Proprietors Gary and Monique Hudson started the business after moving to Utah from Alaska nearly a decade ago.

5 march 007 page Book Review: A latter-day guide Awakening To Our Awful Situation Warnings from the Nephite Prophets By Jack Monnett Nauvoo House 006 Awakening to Our Awful Situation takes readers to the here and now of scripture and warnings from this dispensation s living prophets. Using Moroni s poignant description of the latter-days as a guide, while also considering the writings of other Book of Mormon prophets, Dr. Jack Monnett contrasts current events of today with those of the ancient Americans. Pertinent but little known historical information is unfolded to help the reader understand the relevance of revelation and the role of Church members in today s world. Awakening to Our Awful Situation introduces Latter-day Saints to American events and political practices that are frequently disturbing. Weaved with scripture and writings from latter-day prophets are topics such as, America s world wars, major media networking, money and banking systems, public education, the war on drugs, the war on terrorism, and the United Nations. Particular attention is given to the events of 9/, the Oklahoma City bombings, and the Iraq war. Awakening To Our Awful Situation by Jack Monnett uses scripture and latterday references to give relevance to revelation and the role of LDS church members in today s world. Dear Miss Bee Haven Dear Miss Bee Haven, I have a bunch of old postcards and greeting cards that were my grandmother s. I want to keep them, but I am not sure how to store them. I thought of putting them in a scrapbook but I am not sure how to stick them in the scrapbook without risking ruining the paper or the writing on the back. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Scared of Scrapbooking Elk Ridge, Utah Dear Scared & Scrappy, Preserving the past correctly is important. Always use acidfree or archival quality materials for preserving paper and cloth items. The easiest way to place the postcards on a page is to get photographic mounting corners that stick to the pages. You put one on each corner, and then the postcard can be slipped into the corners without tape or damage to the postcard. You can usually find these at an office supply store or photography store for a few dollars for a pack of Have fun! 9 march 007 page 9 Durable caveman comics still valuable Linda Rosenkrantz Contemporary Collectibles Contemporary Americans have always gotten a kick out of caveman jokes complete with leopard-skin togs, big sticks and dinosaur companions. The Flintstones come to mind, as well as the B.C. comic strip. But predating both was the long-running Alley Oop strip, which began in the 90s and still appears daily. It provides an enduring and entertaining mix of fantasy adventure with a large dollop of humor. It was created by an Iowa-born cartoonist named V. or Vincent T. Hamlin. It first appeared on Dec., 9, initially as a daily strip, with a Sunday full page feature added a year later. The name of the strip and its lead character derived from the phrase used by French gymnasts and trapeze artists - Allez Oup! The strip was picked up by a minor syndicate, Bonnet-Brown, which folded six months later. Alley Oop was then bought by Newspaper Enterprise Association. It was launched on Aug. 7, 9, with the Sunday pages following the next year. It s been running seven days a week ever since. Hamlin definitely had a way with names, heavy on those with the vowel O. Oop was a righteous and energetic, if somewhat thick, simian-looking caveman, dressed in a garment resembling fur shorts, and lived in the land of Moo. Moo was ruled by King Guzzle and his daunting wife Queen Umpateedle. Oop s attractive, unprehistoric-looking girlfriend was named Oola. Oop s rhyming sidekick was Foozy, his enemies were King Guz and King Tunk, the ruler of the Lem Kingdom, and his pet stegosaurus was Dinny, his principal means of transportation. Dinny was probably an ancestor of the Flintstones Dino. Although Oop and Oola were Stone Age characters, they were able to experience a great deal of time travel when they found themselves in a time machine invented by the 0th century scientist Dr. Elbert Wonmug. It s been pointed out that this was a pun on the name Albert Einstein, which translates to one mug. The time machine transported them to many periods and civilizations, such as ancient Troy, Cleopatra s Egypt, medieval England, the Caribbean, the modern American West and even to the moon - in a storyline that anticipated the first moon landing. An amateur paleontologist, Hamlin provided scientific facts about dinosaurs in a box called Dinny s Family Album, Monsters of the Prehistoric Past, which was part of the strip for a time in the 90s. Alley Oop also had some non-newspaper incarnations. He appeared in comic books, beginning in 96, in the back pages of Dell s The Funnies and had comic books of his own on and off in the 90s, 0s, 60s and 90s. There were a few Alley Oop Big Little Books, and the caveman character appeared in animated form in segments of the 97 Archie Saturday morning TV show. In addition, the comics first fan award, given from 96 to 969, were called the Alleys. They consisted of a statuette of Oop. When Hamlin retired in 97, the drawing and writing was taken over by his former longterm assistant Dave Graue, who retired in 00. Currently, the tradition is being carried on by Jack and Carole Bender. Collectors appreciate Hamlin s skillful draftsmanship he was particularly adept Trademark of NEA reprinted by permission V.T. Hamlin illustrated this Alley Oop, panel in 9. Alley Oop was one of the most popular strips of the forties. Oop comics vary in value from less than $0 to around $8. at crosshatching his fluid brushwork, strong graphic design, sweeping sense of movement and a fanciful and colorful palette on Sundays. Especially collectible are the rare issues of the 90s anthology comic book Funnies, which also included Mutt & Jeff, Tailspin Tommy and several others and can now fetch more than $00 for a single copy. Linda Rosenkrantz has edited Auction magazine and authored books, including Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana: What to Name Your Baby Now (St. Martin s Press; $). She cannot answer letters personally. Courtesy of Copley News Service Collecting antique maps: a beginner s guide Neil Street VintageMaps.com founder California wasn t always attached to the west coast of the North American continent. It used to be an island. At least, that s what mapmakers, mostly European, believed for about 00 years, from around 60 to 70. So that s how they drew it on their maps. The Island of California, as it is commonly called, is just one of the innumerable collecting niches that are possible in the increasingly popular field of antique map collecting. Antique map collecting is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years, which is perhaps one reason why there is such an enormous amount of material, from the affordable to the prohibitively expensive, in circulation today. Two reasons for the popularity of antique map collecting are that antique maps appeal to a broad spectrum of people (for a variety of reasons) and they make very attractive framed pieces that can be enjoyed by many. The wide range of antique maps available today means that a novice can easily enter the field, although hopefully armed with a little caution and common sense. The best place to begin is with some reading. Two excellent books for the beginning collector are Collecting Old Maps by Francis J. Manasek, and Collecting Antique Maps: An Introduction to the History of Cartography, by Jonathan Potter. Armed with a little guidance from these excellent books, the new collector is likely to focus on a particular niche within the map collecting field. This is an important step, since it is by narrowing the focus that a beginner is able to most quickly gain the necessary expertise for successful, and enjoyable, collecting. However, the new collector should also take some time to look around before jumping into a chosen area. There are as many collecting areas as there are collectors, and a little time and effort spent exploring the field may lead to surprising and unique choices. What can a person expect to pay for an antique map? The price range is as wide, or wider, than almost every other field of antique collecting. Perfectly acceptable antique maps can be had for as little as $0. For those with a deep pocket, rare or hard-to-find maps can easily run into five or six figures. With the relatively low cost of entry, antique map collecting is an ideal choice for many individuals, combining wide opportunity for research and learning (history, geography, art, engraving, printing, politics, to name but a few) with the opportunity to display one s prizes in an attractive way. And for those who truly catch the bug, antique map collecting can become a passion that is limited only by the imagination.
