5 Opening of 108 th OR-WA Annual Conference of the Western Episcopal District Wednesday Morning Worship Service, June 21, 2000 We began celebrating our Opening Worship Service. The Processional Hymn was "The Church's One Foundation". Our Worship Leader was the Host Pastor Rev. Robert F. Kemp. Assisting Rev. Kemp were Brother William Dudley, Rev. Joyce Smith, Rev. Mary Moore and Rev. Robert Probasco. Our opening Hymn was "And are we yet alive". The scripture was Daniel 3: 1-8. Prayer was given with the response "Whisper a prayer". We sang "Glory, glory hallelujah". Community A. M. E. Zion Choir participated by singing "I'm on the battlefield for my Lord" and "Some how I made it" Bishop Clarence Carr was presented by Rev. Robert Kemp who in turn introduced the speaker, Presiding Elder Rev. Dr. L. J. Thompson. The Presiding Elder's topic was "Worship", he had additional scripture of Psalms 95: Invitation was given by Bishop Clarence Carr the invitation Song was "I surrender all". Eleven person's answered the call of special surrendering prayer. Other song's we sang were "The Lord strong and mighty" and "Hold to his hand". Offering was $ Announcements were given. The Annual Conference was officially opened by Bishop Carr. Grace was sung and benediction was given by the speaker. Wednesday Afternoon Session, June 21, 2000 We started with the Evangelist Committee leading devotion. Partiscipating were Rev. Odell Thompson with Brother Charles Stone. Organization of the Conference Election of Officers Election of secretary Election of secretary was called for by the Bishop. Presiding Elder L. J. Thompson moved that Brother William Dudley serve as secretary of the Conference, 2nd by Sister Mary Coleman. Motion carried. 108th Annual Conference.doc 1

Rules Committee - Verbal report Bishop Carr called for the Rules Committee 1) Program be presented as is with necessary changes by the bishop. 2) The bar will be first 5 rows of both sides. 3) Guest be extended all the amenities of the conference. 4) This body would be governed by Robert's Rules of Order and the Discipline. Where a conflict may arise the Discipline will rule. Rev. Kemp moved for exception of the Rules Committee report, 2nd by Presiding Elder L. J. Thompson, motion carried. Delegates were then seated in order of church, First Church seated first. Whom shall we have as Assistant Secretary? Rev. Robert Kemp moved that we have Sister Mary Coleman, 2nd by Presiding Elder Thompson the motion carried. Whom shall we have as Cabinet Secretary? Rev. Robert Kemp moved that we have Sister Barbara S. Carr, 2nd by Rev. Joyce Smith the motion carried. Whom shall we have as Assistant Cabinet Secretary? Sister Barbara S. Carr nominated Sister Lorine Miles. Presiding Elder Thompson moved that the nominations be closed on said name, 2nd by Rev. Robert Kemp. Vote passed. Whom shall we have as Marshall? Rev. Robert Kemp moved that we have Asby Simmons, 2nd by Gail Thomas, motion carried. It was asked whom else shall we have as Marshall? Rev. Robert Kemp moved that we have Brother James Smith, 2nd by Rev. Sister Carr gave words of greetings. Recognition of Visitors Bishop asked the Presiding Elder L. J. Thompson to present his good friend to the body. Presiding Elder Thompson presented Elder Robert Lee Franklin. Pastor of Prayer Changes Things, Church of God in Christ, San Bernardino, CA. Elder Franklin is visiting the area and currently lives in California, he will be moving back to the Portland area. Elder Franklin talked a few minutes with words of encouragement. 8 For 2001 Annual Conference place is already set at First A. M. E. Zion Church. The date selected was June 20th through 24th. For 2002 Annual Conference Rev. John Wyatt moved that we go to Ebenezer A. M. E. Zion Church, 2nd by Charles Stone. The date set are June 19th through 23rd. The 1st Checkup Meeting will be held at First A. M. E. Zion Church on October 28, The 2nd Checkup Meeting Rev. John Wyatt would like to extend an invitation to Ebenezer, 2nd by Charles Stone. The date will be March 3, Bishop Carr asked how many gotten the new history of the A.M. E. Zion Church? Five said yes, they have a copy. The price is right around $ Bishop is responsible to get orders for his District. It was asked how many churches would like to order the new History of the A. M. E. Zion Church? Churches ordering are: Community 10 Pauline 5 First Church 10 Catherine 5 Ebenezer 5 Noah's Ark 3 Total 38 Conference Treasurer Report - See report Bishop stated you've heard the report of the treasurer. What is your pleasure? Rev. John Wyatt moved the report be received and referred, 2nd by Rev. Robert Kemp, motion carried. Whom shall we have as the Treasurer of the Oregon-Washington Conference? Rev. John Wyatt moved that we have Rev. Mary Moore, Brother John Anderson 2nd and motion carried. Auditing Committee was given instructions on their responsibility. Reports Presiding Elder - see report It was stated you have heard the report of the Presiding Elder what is your pleasure? Rev. John Wyatt moved the report be received and referred. It was 2nd by Brother John Anderson. There was an unreadiness from Rev. Robert Kemp who presented a small token of appreciation from the Ministers and members of the conferences, motion carried. Pastor reports Pastor report were next called for by Bishop, they were as follows: Rev. John Wyatt - see report Rev. Melba Thomas - see report Bishop Carr took the opportunity to discuss about being careful about saying you are a councilor. He spoke about we are in a climate where people are looking for anybody they can sue. We can't be to caution in this climate. We must be careful as pastor's making appointments. Bishop asked Rev. John Wyatt to check into the credentials of the American Association of Christian Counselors. Continued pastor report Rev. Mary Moore - see report Grace was sung Welcome Program, June 21, 2000 The Welcome Program began with the Host Pastor Rev. Robert Kemp leading in the worship part of the program. Rev. Kemp was assisted by Rev. Mary Moore, Rev. Joyce Smith, Brother William Dudley. A solo was sung by Sister Star Evans. She sang "It takes strong faith" and was assisted by Brother Charles Stone on the piano. Rev. Robert Kemp introduced the Welcome Chairperson Sister Gail Thomas. Sister Gail introduced the following persons who brought words of welcome. Mr. Jack Burkman, Vancouver City Council Member for Mayor Royce Pollard, Mr. Burkman also presented a proclamation - see report. A Greeting Letter was read by Sister Thomas from The Honorable Gary Locke, Office of Governor, Governor State of Washington - see report. 108th Annual Conference.doc 5

10 Mrs. Valree Joshua, President of the Vancouver Branch, NAACP. Ms. Ethel Hunter, Board Member, Clark College Foundation. Rev. Joyce Smith presented the Presiding Elder, Rev. L. J. Thompson. The Presiding Elder presented Bishop Clarence Carr to all the program participates. Bishop Carr greeted everyone and thanked the presenters. Bishop talked about the well known Sister Harriet Tubman and how she was a Zionitie. As one of our members the contributions she made to the A. M. E. Zion Church as well as to nation. And Bishop spoke about the donation of her property to the A. M. E. Zion Church. Bishop Carr also went over how the A. M. E. Zion Church is 204 years old. Brother William Dudley was asked by the Bishop to respond to the welcome. Benediction was given by Rev. Robert Francis Kemp. Wednesday Evening Communion Service, June 21, 2000 Devotion was in the form of musical selections, led by both Brother Charles Stone and Sister Star Evans. The Processional Hymn was Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty. We began with our Call to worship, Rev. John Wyatt was the Worship Leader. The following persons were participates Rev. Robert Kemp, Rev. Mary Moore, Rev. Odell Thompson and Rev. Robert Probasco. Other participates were Community A. M. E. Zion Church Choir who sang "I've got a testimony" and "Jesus will fix it". Pauline A. M. E. Zion Church sang "Great is the Lord" and "I just can't tell it all". Bishop Carr introduced the speaker of the Communion Service, Rev. Joyce Smith. Rev. Smith's subject was "Hallelujah for the cross". The scripture read was Romans 8: 1-5, our prayer response was "Savior, hear us, we pray". The Benevolent offering amount was $ The Communion offering received was $ "Pass me not" was sang for the invitation. We celebrated Holy Communion, Bishop Clarence Carr was the celebrant with Presiding Elder L. J. Thompson, Rev. Joyce Smith, Rev. Mary Moore, and Rev. Robert Probasco assisting. Our Hymn of Fellowship was "What a fellowship, what a joy divine". Benediction was given by the speaker, Rev. Joyce Smith. Thursday Morning Session, June 22, 2000 Devotion was lead by Committee on Evangelism participating were Rev. Odell Thompson and Brother Charles Stone. The scripture used was Psalms 37: 1-4. We sang "Worship Him", after which Rev. Thompson led us in prayer. We sang "Down at the cross". Testimony's had been given by Sister Thelma Jones, Rev. Odell Thompson, and Brother William Dudley. Rev. Thompson and the Board of Evangelism were thanked. Bishop Carr lead us in singing "I feel like going on" and "Surely the presence of the 108th Annual Conference.doc 6

11 Lord". A brief school of the prophet God's Grace, Gods' Saving Grace was given by Bishop Carr. Reports Reading of the Minutes The Minutes were called for by Bishop Carr. The first reading of the minutes for Wednesday was read by the Secretary Brother William Dudley. Sister Joyce Clardy moved the opening session minutes be approved with necessary correction. Motion carried. Afternoon Session of the minutes were read. It was moved by Rev. John Wyatt and seconded by Rev. Robert Kemp that the minutes be approved with necessary corrections. The remanding minutes were read and approved. Pastors reports continued Pastors reports were called for and continued from Wednesday in the following order: Rev. Joyce Smith - see report Rev. Hermon Smith - see report Rev. Hermon Smith is renting a new facility and will need to get insurance. Information about the rental contract needs to be given to Bishop Carr. Bishop Carr used time to give the conference teachings on phases of finances. Rev. Robert F. Kemp - see report Rev. Robert N. Probasco - see report All pastors reports were given thanks and applause. Bishop Carr asked Pastors to give explanations of unfamiliar Outreach programs and ministries. Brother William Dudley gave a progress report of Noah's Ark Mission Church. The Bishop Carr informed Brother Dudley of the need of two or three Trustees and one class leader. Brother Dudley was encouraged to continue as a mission church and when ready for next level of developing the society to contact the Presiding Elder and Bishop. The Bishop appointed a committee to work with churches who have made the greatest improvements, increase membership, unique/outstanding ministries this year. These persons were selected. 12 Conference. The Conference Evangelist were called to report. Conference Evangelist The reports from the Conference Evangelists were given: Report from Rev. Emily Broussard was given to Bishop Carr - see report Rev. James Purifoy - see report Rev. Odell Thompson - see report. Rev. Odell gave Bishop Carr a letter which he needed to deliver on Wednesday of the Conference. Thanks and applause were given for the reports. The Presiding Elder was directed to preside over the noonday service. Thursday Memorial Worship Service, June 22, 2000 Necrology Members Service Devotion was lead by the Committee on Evangelism. Participating were Rev. James Purifoy, Rev. Odell Thompson and Brother Charles Stone. We sang "Blessed Assurance". The scripture was Romans 8:1-5 read by Rev. James Purifoy after which prayer was offered by Rev. Odell Thompson. We also sang "Bye and Bye". Presiding Elder L. J. Thompson introduced the speaker of the hour Elder Robert Franklin. Pastor of Prayer Changes Things, Church of God in Christ, San Bernardino, CA. Rev. Joyce Smith sang "I Bowed on My Knees and Cried Holy". Elder Franklin's subject for the Memorial Sermon was "I'm Going Through" after the sermon he lead us in the song "I'm Going Through". Bishop Carr extended the invitation for anyone who may be going through. "Blessed Assurance" was sung as our Invitational song. Necrology Committee Report - see report The report of the committee on Necrology was then presented. The committee lit a candle for each name that was called stating that there was no answer. The committee consists of Rev. Nellie Thompson, Rev. Hermon Smith, Sister Thelma Jones, Rev. Joyce Smith, Rev. Odell Thompson and Rev. Melba Thomas. Rev. Richard Campbell of the San Diego conference was added to the names that were called. The song "It is Well with my Soul" was sung. Prayer was led by Bishop Carr. 13 The Committee on Evangelism led the devotion, following persons participated Rev. Odell Thompson, Rev. James Purifoy and Brother Charles Stone. We sang "Blessed Assurance". Rev. Purifoy read the scripture which was Romans 12:1-2 and prayer was rendered. Our last song was "At the Cross". Reports Lay Council - see report The Lay Council Hour followed with Sister Gail Thomas, Conference President presiding. Sister Thomas welcomed everyone and asked Brother William Dudley to lead us in prayer. After which we sang the Laity theme song "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah" and Sister Thomas led us in the reading of "The Creed of Laity". Sister Gail gave an informative overview of special works and services the past conference year. She encouraged the members to be active and participate. She discussed the purpose of a Lay Council. Sister Thomas recognized some individuals who have been supportive. They were Brother John Anderson who received a gold medallion. Rev. Robert Kemp also received a ministerial gold medallion. The hour concluded with the Conference President's report. The election of the Lay Council Officer s was deferred until later. Praise and thanks were given to officers and Sister Gail's work. The Bishop informed us of the land owned by A. M. E. Zion in Charlotte. Panel Discussion on Conference Theme The Panel Committee for the Conference theme was called to report. Moderator was Brother William Dudley. Members of the panel were Brother Frank Russell, Brother John Anderson and Sister Thelma Jones. Question and answer session followed. Bishop Carr discussed some of the issues which had been brought up in the panel. On witnessing, it is the way you carry yourself that people watch. Someone once said, "I would rather see a sermon than hear one." The Bishop then asked for a person from each pastor who is a member of the NAACP. He would like to have a list of the members for the conference. The next reports were called for by the Bishop. State of the Church - see report State of the Church was read by the Chair Rev. Robert N. Probasco. Recommendations will be handed in later today to Bishop. It was moved by Rev. Wyatt and seconded by Rev. Moore to be received and referred, motion carried. 14 State of the Country was read by the Chair Rev. John Wyatt. Members of the committee were Brother John Anderson, Brother William Dudley, Sister Gail Thomas and Rev. Hermon Smith. It was moved by Sister Ophelia Ealy and seconded by Brother John Anderson that the report be received and referred, motion carried. Grace was then sung. Thursday Education Night Service, June 22, 2000 Education Night Devotion was led by the Committee on Evangelism. Rev. Odell Thompson, Rev. James Purifoy, Sister Marva Edwards and Brother Charles Stone were the participates. We sang "I'll Fly Away". The scripture "Matthew 5:1-12" read by Rev. Purifoy. We closed by singing "I'll Be Waiting Up There". Christian Education - see report Bishop Carr introduced the Christian Education Chairperson, Rev. Robert Kemp. Rev. Kemp gave his report on the Board. After giving his report Rev. Kemp introduced Sister Marva Edwards, Conference Director of Christian Education to give her report. Rev. Kemp moved and Rev. Odell Thompson seconded the motion that the report be received and referred, motion carried. The Bishop then asked Sister Edwards, What is a preach - a - thong. End of Christian Education session and beginning of Evening Service Thursday Evening Worship Service, June 22, 2000 As we moved into the evening service Rev. Hermon Smith was our Worship Leader. Rev. Mary Moore assisted. Our Hymn of Praise was "They'll Know we are Christians by our Love". Sister Loretta Jack sang a solo, "What God has For Me". Presiding Elder L. J. Thompson read the scripture from Romans 8:1-5. Rev. Melba Thomas led us in prayer. The response was "Spirit of the Living God." Community A. M. E. Zion Church choir participated by singing "Send Up Judah". The offering collected was $ Another solo was rendered by Sister Loretta Jack "It's Gonna "Rain" after which we received a stirring testimony from Sister Jack. God's presence was in the place. We sang "Hallelujah" then enjoyed the awakening presence of the Holy Spirit. It was praise time. Bishop Carr said the Holy Spirit whispered to him. He responded by changing the service and anointing anyone desiring to be anointed. As special prayers were lifted up we lined up. One by one Bishop Carr anointed with oil the sheep of the Lord. We cried, we sang "Thank you, Lord", "Sanctuary", "Come let us adore Him" and many, many 108th Annual Conference.doc 10

15 more. Again we cried, but God blessed. There were announcements. Closing song "Reach out and Touch Somebody's Hand". Benediction was rendered by Rev. John Wyatt. Friday Missionary Convocation, June 23, 2000 Prayer Breakfast Our morning began with the Eleventh Annual Missionary Convocation. The WHOMS theme was " Fulfilling the Mission, the World for Christ, Knowing and Understanding the Mission. We opened with a Call to Prayer and praise led by Rev. Robert Probasco, then he gave the invocation and blessing. We read our hymn responsively it was, "In Christ there is no east or west." led by Rev. Joyce Smith. Sister Lorine Myles was our narrator and had five people participate by reading a bible passage. They were as follows: 1st Reader: Elder Robert Franklin John 4:7-10 2nd Reader: Rev. Nellie Thompson Matthew 8:1-3 3rd Reader: Sister Jan Harris Matthew 19: th Reader: Sister Ophelia Ealy Luke 19:2-10 5th Reader: Sister Gloria Holland Luke 4:17-19 Next, we sang together "O Master Let Me Walk With Thee" and breakfast was served. Missionary Supervisor, Sister Barbara Carr gave remarks and word of encouragement. Sister Carr thanked Sister Myles and others for their decorations and their work. Also she spoke to us about who we are and that we are ambassadors. It's not on a feeling we operate we are His. The benediction was given by Rev. Robert Kemp. We moved from the dining area to the sanctuary for the Missionary Convocation. We began devotion with the song "We Have Come Into This House" and "Bless The Lord". Brother Walter Smith, Jr. assisted by playing the piano. Sister Joyce Clardy read our scripture Psalms 111. Prayer was given by Sister Gerri Hart after which we say the Hymn "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less". District President Sister Mary Coleman presented our Georgia Peach, Missionary Supervisor Sister Barbara Carr. Sister Carr spoke to us and continued to encourage us. She spoke about praying and making yourself available to the Lord. What praying is about and being focused on the goodness of God. Sister Carr shared with us some of her personal experiences in witnessing and how we should let the Spirit of God be our guide. Sister Carr discussed WHOMS constitution. Friday Missionary Night Service, June 23, 2000 The Missionary Candlelight Worship Service The Missionary's processed in all dressed in their white and arrayed with their stoles, singing "Walk in the light", and holding up their light. We were led in our Call to Worship by the Missionary Supervisor Sister Barbara Carr. Sister Carr presented Sister Mary Coleman, District President of Womens Home and Overseas Missionary Society and a member of First A. M. E. Zion Church to lead us in the Invocation. Our hymn of Praise was "Lift Him Up". The Word of God was read to us by Sister Gloria Holland, member of Catherine Memorial A. M. E. Zion Church. The scripture read was St. John 1:1-12 after which Sister Toni Rochelle led us in prayer. We asked the Lord to "Hear our Prayer", Sister Carr then welcomed all the visitors. There are two persons from Alaska, Rev. Shelly Brown and Rev. Robert Taylor also Mrs. Winifred Sharper was present. Sister Loretta Jack, Buds Superintendent and all twenty of the Buds were presented at that time by Sister Carr. The Buds presented us with the Gift of Song, They sang to us "God Made". Sister Pamela Etheridge, Y s Coordinator were presented next. They presented three poems which were read. Sister Wilhemena Stone the Young Adults Coordinator and the young adults presented to us in song. "My relationship with you" was the song that all seventeen YAMS sang. We began the stoling ceremony by singing "Throw out the Life-line." After which Sister Jennie Kemp District President of the Life members council presented the nine persons which were to be stoled. Bishop Clarence Carr and the Missionary Supervisor, Sister Barbara Carr vested the candidates. Rev. Shelly Brown was asked to read the charge to candidates. Our Missionary Supervisor introduced Bishop Clarence Carr. Bishop Carr thanked the Missionaries and introduced the worship leader, Rev. Mary Moore. Pastor of Catherine Memorial A. M. E. Zion Church. The Oregon-Washington Mass Choir presented to us in song by singing, "I will bless his name for always. All had the opportunity to participate by giving in the offering, which totaled $1, Rev. 19 preacher of the evening. After his introduction of Pastor Robert Probasco of First A. M. E. Zion Church, Portland. He called for the First A. M. E. Zion Mass choir who sang "They that wait upon the Lord", and "The Lord our God". The theme Pastor Probasco used was "the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost". He told the story of the sin problem. Our invitational song was "Amazing Grace". Bishop Carr acknowledged our visitors Rev. Shelly Brown, Rev. Robert Taylor, and Sister Winifred Sharper. Doxology was sang and benediction given by the speaker. Saturday Morning Session, June 24, 2000 Christian Education Convocation Devotion Team led by Youth President, Brother Russell Frank who led us in "This little light of mine." Sister Antoinette Cunningham read scripture for us, Roman 8:1-5. Sister Megan Dudley led us in prayer. We then sang "I will bless the Lord" and "They'll know we are Christians". Brother Walter Smith presented the Worship, the Work was presented by Brother John Anderson and the Witness by Sister Phyllis Kelley. Youth and Children Directors were instructed to move to their workshop areas to fulfill Christian Education Activities planned for youth and children. The Western Region Vice Presidents were presented for ACE, CO-Vice Presidents Sister Winfred Sharper and Sister Ophelia Ealy. Sister W. Sharper presented a workshop on Unity (Unity means strength). For YACM Rev. Keith I. Harris was the presenter. The workshop was about staying in the Word. Romans 12 was the referral scripture perfecting of the Saints. There was a word of prayer led by Rev. Shelly Brown. The message reference was Ephesian 4:1-6. The visitors that were present are Brother Joseph Brown from California Conference, Sister Yvonne Young from California Conference, Rev. Shelly Brown from Alaska Conference and Sister Sandra Black from Alaska Conference. Next we heard a Reading Still I rise, by Sister C. Joyce Clardy and then dinner was served. A dance presentation was given by the Step and Praise Dance Group from Community A. M.E. Zion Church. Their first presentation was called, Praise Step, and the second Send me, and I ll go which only the young ladies of the team performed. Next we moved into the Presentation of Candidates from the Junior Court. After which was the Introduction of the Bishop by Rev. Dr. L. J. Thompson. Sister Diana Cunningham, District Director of Young Adults assisted by leading us in our Responsive Literary. Sister Gerald Hart, District Director of Adults, led us in prayer. After which we moved to our various classes. The subject was Deep Joy, our selected scripture was Phillippians 4:4-18. Sister Hart led the Adults and Young adult class. Members present 55, amount offering $ Sunday School Benediction was led by Brother John Anderson. Sunday Morning Worship Service, June 26, 2000 Service began with Praise songs instrumentally done. The OR-WA Mass Choir processed in followed by the minister s. Our processional Hymn was All Hail the Power of Jesus Name. Rev. Robert F. Kemp was our Leader of Worship. Rev. Kemp gave the Call to Worship. Rev. John Wyatt participated by leading us in the Invocation. Our Hymn of Praise was My hope is Built on Nothing Less. Rev. The Presiding Elder introduced our speaker the Presiding Prelate, Bishop Clarence Carr. Conference Mass Choir sang So Good, I just can t tell it all. Bishop Carr led us in the song I need Thee. The text was Acts 3:1-7 and the subject was Broke and something to shout about. One of the points made in the sermon was Call on the man named Jesus and Praise him and you will have something to shout about. We sang the hymn, Thank you Jesus. Rev. Robert Kemp gave the invitation to Christian Discipleship. Sixteen persons came forward for special prayer. The offering was $ Next music was given the Conference Queen, Sister Ann Smith, I won t, I ll never let go of his hand. After which the Courtesy Committee was called to a report.
