THE MAGAZINE OF BOTHWELL PARISH CHURCH SCOTLAND S OLDEST COLLEGIATE CHURCH Registered Scottish Charity No: SC Minister: The Revd. J. M. Gibson, TD. The Manse of Bothwell, 4 Manse Avenue, Bothwell, G71 8PQ Tel: jamesmgibson@msn.com Church Office Tel: ( Tuesday, Thursday & Friday mornings) Church Centre: Chapterhouse Café: FROM THE MANSE. Publication deadlines mean that I am writing this the day before the General Election. Huge uncertainty exists regarding its likely outcome. A hung parliament being touted as the most probable result with no one party gaining overall majority. Whatever the outcome, no doubt you will have had your fill of election campaigns, broadcasts, debates and promises. The last thing I want to do is add to your mounting sense of depression! For the first time ever, leaders of the three principal national political parties took part in televised debates. Great was the media hype and even greater the expectation of pundits that such a forum would reveal the political gravitas and nous of each candidate. The reality was somewhat different. Policies were hinted at rather than fully explained and the whole event proved little more than an exercise in point scoring and personal preening. Questions were asked by the audience with immigration and the financial deficit the main concerns raised. Yet little new information was offered other than the soundbites with which we had already become familiar. Maybe we - the public - have only ourselves to blame for that. Any time one of the parties tried to give a fuller response indicating the depth of cuts and increased taxes necessary to fill the gaping cavern in our national finances, poll ratings would immediately plummet. End of fuller responses. However, the fact remains, how we can best address the crushing level of financial debt our nation faces as a result of the banking crisis and recession will continue to exercise the collective minds of the new parliament and the nation for some time to come. Whichever party is elected to Government, tough action and hard, hard decisions will have to be made before long. Unpopular though they may be in the short term. A Civilised Society It is often jokingly said that no-one likes paying taxes. Certainly, no-one likes waste and taxpayers money ought to be used in the most effective way possible. But that said, taxes are the main income source for a Government and are one of the signs that we all belong together in a society that seeks to be civilised. Informed commentators have indicated the urgent need both for cuts in public services and rise in taxation. If they are indeed necessary, let us hope they may be implemented as fairly as possible, mindful of the straits already faced by the poorest and most dependent in society. One of the characteristics of the early Christian Church is the way in which it very quickly looked after the poor. St Paul, for example, went to a great deal of trouble to raise money from the church groupings around the Mediterranean for those in need. He regarded this as a fundamental sign of Christian fellowship, an essential mark of what it meant to be true human beings, people who belong to each other in the deepest sense. The taxes we pay are also a sign of our solidarity with one another and a mark that we wish as a society to hold to certain decencies and standards of care for everyone no matter how great or humble, rich or poor. They are also an acknowledgement of the fact that we all do have a responsibility to one another and that there is a price to pay a price worth paying for the common good. Indeed, we might even regard them as a kind of sacrament reminding us that we all belong together within t h e o n e society. As our political leaders in Government disclose more of their policies for tackling the enormous financial challenges we all face in this nation, as others do throughout the world, maybe if they ever had the courage to say this they might be surprised by the strength of our support Jim Gibson 1

BEING PREPARED As stated in our Easter magazine, there will be a fire drill during Morning Worship on Sunday June 13th. It need not be a full drill. Only the children going to their Sunday Club activities, their leaders and the Elders on duty will be taking an active part. The Socialisers Saturday 6 February we held a 70 s dance night which went very well. Everybody who attended enjoyed themselves and the night was a great success. We had under 5 year olds to 80 year olds all dancing to the Jim Carson Band. There were a few Bay City Rollers look alikes and our Session Clerk well I am not sure if a lot of people recognised him! The drill will begin immediately following the Children s Hymn and before the children actually leave for their activities. As usual, everyone will sit down after the Children s Hymn and within a few moments the alarm will sound. As soon as it does, Elders on duty will ensure that both the Main Door and the Priest s Door in the Quire are opened. While the congregation remain seated, the children and their leaders will leave the building. The doors will remain open until all the children have left and the fire alarm stops. The doors will then be closed and the Service will continue. Sandra Greenshields Secretary - Car Treasure Hunt This now much enjoyed tradition will take place on Sunday A u g u s t 2 2 n d. 5 Living the Questions is a study for the countless people of faith who have suffered in silence as the voices of fear and certitude claim to profess the unchanging truth of Christianity. Its purpose is to provide a resource for the discussion o f w h a t I a l r e a d y believed by many faithful people still holding on within institutional Living the Questions A new programme of learning for anyone who wishes to explore faith In a stimulating and open way. religi on, while harbouring a conviction that what the church teaches isn t the whole story. It is an openminded alternative to courses that attempt to give people all the answers and instead it strives to create a safe environment where people have permission to ask all the questions they have always wanted to ask but have been afraid to voice for fear of being thought a heretic. It is intended not only for church members, but also for those who may consider themselves believers in exile - those who have left the Church because pf its refusal to take their questions seriously. How does it work? Living the Questions (LtQ) is a DVD-based programme exploring themes of Christian faith. We will be looking at the first unit of 7 sessions Invitation to Journey. Each section lasts about 20 minutes, featuring many prominent teachers and theologians and supplemented by participant guides with weekly reading and discussion questions (go to YouTube and type in living with questions for a useful taster!) Our meetings will be quite informal, built around a simple supper and sharing our responses to what we have watched. The Minister will lead each session. If you are interested. Please give your name and contact details, as soon as possible, to the Minister (Office / Manse or bothwellparishoffice@btconnect.com). What does it involve? Thursday evenings September 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th; then October 7th and 14th. All meetings within Church Centre. Each evening will begin at 7.30pm with a simple meal and will end by 9.30pm at the latest. For this first programme there will be space for 20 people, on a first-come basis it is hoped to repeat the programme at a future date and so provide further opportunity to take part. Those wishing to take part are asked to commit to the whole series (inevitably there will be unavoidable absence, but the intention should be to attend all 7 meetings). The programme is expensive to purchase. There will be a charge of 10 per person for the whole course. Disclaimer: The producers of LtQ say this programme is NOT for: those who personal faith requires them to believe that the Bible is the inerrant and infallible word of God. those who believe that the doctrines of the church are sacrosanct and never to be questioned. those who believe the reason the mainline churches have been losing members is because they haven t been teaching orthodox Christianity or preaching the true Gospel. Living the Questions does not try to provide easy answers, but to be a resource for people who are in the midst of a lifelong conversation about the mysteries of religious faith and life. RED SEA CLUB Thanks to the generosity of the congregation the children of the Sunday School raised 75 from the sale of bookmarks and baskets on Easter Sunday. A further 25 from Sunday School funds was added to make a final total of 100 which was sent to Mrs MacDonald to help the children in The Place of Restoration in South Africa. The children would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to reach this total. PLEASE SAVE STAMPS Since beginning our stamp saving campaign members of the congregation have raised over 2500 for the work of the Church s World Mission Council. THANK YOU to everyone for the cards and flowers, and also for the kindness shown to me d u r i n g m y r e c e n t illness. Marilyn Jack 4

From The Treasurer Accounts 2009: An Overview Following changes introduced by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, there is no longer a requirement for congregations to approve financial statements. It is my intention to hold a meeting to give a summary of the accounts for 2009; I have prepared a short commentary in the meantime. Overall, a deficit in the region of 5,000 was incurred in the year. This is a significant sum when one considers that it represents around 4% of the congregation's offerings for the year. There are a number of reasons for this, although the main one is that our offerings in 2009 were approximately 5,500 lower than the previous y e a r, i n c l u d i n g t a x recovered. An approach to the congregation, asking that Members review their level of givings, was planned for the year but postponed because of the economic climate and the effect it would doubtless be having on Members. The Church Centre, however, continues to perform well and is very busy throughout the year, bringing in significant levels of rent. Although there are costs involved in having the Centre constantly in use, through wear and tear, staffing, cleaning and so on, it enhances the position of the Church within the community and has proved to be a very worthwhile venture. Expenses were generally in line with expectations, with our main costs of Ministries and Mission being some 3,000 lower than the previous year. Heat and light costs remain high and steps are being taken to reduce t h e i m p a c t o f t h e s e. The final results for 2009 show that there is little by way of general reserves; however, as a congregation, we do have in excess of 100,000 from legacies and donations which can be used in accordance with the donor's wishes. donor's wishes. These legacies have allowed us to carry out considerable amounts of work without appealing to the congregation for additional funds. In particular, the conditions attached to the Ministerial Reserve allowed for the recruiting of an office secretary, which proved to be invaluable during Mr Gibson's absence. Since the start of 2010, significant new legacies and donations have been received for which we are most appreciative. In summary, despite the deficit for 2009, I believe that the congregational finances remain healthy and that we can look forward with a degree of confidence. Thank you for your continuing support to your church. Alastair Scott General Treasurer We are now approaching the end of our BB session and will be holding our Annual Display on Friday 21 st May, starting at 7pm. Anyone wishing to join us at this event will be most welcome. In our last report we listed the various successes that we had achieved this year, but there were still a few results to receive. First of all the Junior Section. Having won the Maze M a r ch i n g we a t t en d e d t h e Quarterdeck Service at Cadzow Church to receive the trophy. At this event we found out that we were 3 rd in the Junior Bible Quiz and also had achieved 3 rd Place in the Jim Reid Trophy for the Best Junior Section missing out on 2 nd by half a point. This was a fantastic achievement for the boys and marked the end of a very good year. Also at this service a new Trophy was presented for the Junior Section Quiz. This was donated to the battalion by the 1 st Bothwell and is called the Bob McLean Quiz Quaich, unfortunately we were only 2 nd in this competition and the trophy was presented to the 2 nd Larkhall we will try to win it back next year. The Company Section still had 2 events to take part in and also were waiting for the outcome of the Bible Competition. Sadly our Bible performance was not as good as we would have liked, and the 5-a-side team weren't able to repeat their success of last year. However we did maintain our level of performance on the Drill Floor winning the Squad Drill Competition for the 15 th time in a row. The Boys were absolutely immaculate in their performance and fully deserved to win. On the 9 th May we attended the Battalion Annual Church Parade to be presented with the trophies that we had won. There were however two trophies to be announced the Best Company Section and the Best All Round Company. We were not anticipating to win either and when the Best Company Section was announced we were delighted to be in 3 rd Place. However when the Best Company trophy was presented our delight turned to stunned disbelief when the 1 st Bothwell were announced as the winners the first time since 2003 and only the 5 th time that we have won this For the Boys this has been a great year and they are all eagerly waiting to find out who has won the Company Trophies. We also still have a camp to attend and Expeditions to be done so although the main business is done we will still be working away. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Congregation for all the support you have given us over the past year it really is good to know that we can operate with your backing. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Company Staff for all their hard work. Robin McLean Captain 1 st Bothwell Company, The Boys' Brigade Church Web Site 5

The Challenge of the Disruption - A Snapshot of Our Recent Past by JASON WARDLEY 18th May 1843 saw one of the most significant events in the history of the Scottish church. Although recognised by Act of Parliament as the national Church of the Scottish people the Kirk had always claimed an independent spiritual jurisdiction over her own affairs, an independence recognised by the Revolution Settlement of 1690 which had effectively ended both royal and parliamentary interference in Church o r g a n i s a t i on a n d w o r s h i p. Patronage the right of a wealthy patron to install a minister of their choice into a parish had been abolished in 1649, briefly returning following the restoration of Episcopacy in But following its restoration in 1712 it once again became a point of contention, a symbol of the subordination of the church to the landed interest, the Jacobite party and the whim of a Westminster government whose Ministers hated [the] Church, and whose chief supporters, the country gentlemen of England hated it still more. The Disruption of 1843 was the culmination of ten years of conflict that began in 1833 when the General Assemble passed the Veto Act stating that when dealing with a Call to a vacant parish, Presbytery was obliged to reject a candidate if they had the signatures of less than half of the male heads of the families in the parish. However, in October of 1834 the Earl of Kinnoul, patron of the parish of Auchterarder, proposed a candidate, Robert Young, who had the support of only three mem bers of the congregation. The case was appealed to the General Assembly in 1835; when they backed the original Presbytery decision, the Earl appealed to the Court of Session who found against the Assembly by eight votes to five. When the 1838 Assembly met a few weeks later it asserted its exclusive jurisdiction founded on the Word of God but referred the case to the House of Lords; unfortunately they found in favour of Young and also declared the Veto Act illegal, while the Court of Session struck a while the Court of Session struck a further blow when it awarded damages of 15,000 to the Earl of Kinnoul and Young. Elsewhere, Marnoch in the bitterly divided Presbytery of Strathbogie saw an unpopular minister being inducted by just half of Presbytery, after the entire congregation solemnly walked out of the church. By 1843 when Robert Peel s government summarily dismissed the Claim of Right made by the Assembly in 1842, the Kirk was split between Moderates (led by Andrew Thomson, minister of the new church of St George s in the New Town, one of the most highly educated and cultured congregations in Scotland) who represented the conservative element in the church, disapproving of popular religious enthusiasm and yet relaxed on matters of doctrine; and Evangelicals - non-intrusionists appalled at state interference and continued opposition to their plans to create new parishes and improve social conditions in the poorest areas, led by Thomas Chalmers, Minister of St Johns, a new charge in the midst of the urban industrial squalor of Glasgow. The General Assembly changed its venue annually. As that year s General Assembly opened in St Andrew s Church in Edinburgh, the retiring moderator, David Welsh, led the assembly in its opening prayer. Amid a breathless silence he then read out a lengthy statement signed by the 203 members protesting at moves by the state to undermine the spiritual independence of the Kirk. Having laid the statements upon the table, he bowed to the Marquis of Bute, the Lord High Commissioner (the monarch s representation at the Assembly) and walked Chalmers and row after row of his fellow commissioners until the Evangelical side of the church was empty. The departing commissioners proceeded down Hanover Street to nearby Tanfield Hall in Canonmills where 450 signed the Deed of Demission and constituted themselves in to the Free Protesting Church of Scotland, surrendering their churches, houses and incomes rather than their political and theological principles. The foundation stone of New College, the Divinity Faculty of Edinburgh University, the was laid by its first principal, Thomas Chalmers on 3rd June 1846; the Union of the Churches of 1929 was still along way off. So, in its present history, traditions and even its name, Bothwell Parish Church represents not only the union between two historical churches but the reconciliation between the religious enthusiasm of Chalmers, fiercely orthodox with a desire for social justice, the discipline and cultured traditionalism of Thomson, and the scrupulous relation of church and state, one that should provide a model for the engagement between tradition and (post) modernity. Prayer used at The Gathering (2009) A Celtic caim (or circling) prayer Circle us Lord Keep fear without, keep joy within. Circle us Lord Keep complaining out, keep peace within. Circle us Lord Keep despair out, keep hope within. Circle us Lord Keep deceit without, keep beauty within. Circle us Lord. 6

CHURCH LEADERS EASTER MESSAGE ON TRIDENT Just before Easter, Scotland s church leaders launches a challenge to all political parties on the issue of Trident. In a joint open letter Scottish clergy demanded that the billions of pounds spent on nuclear weapons be used instead to help the nation s most vulnerable citizens. With a general election looming, they also urged voters to make it clear to candidates of all parties that Scotland should choose life over death and the alleviation of poverty over the replacement of Trident. The leaders say the possession of nuclear weapons is unjust and wrong - and that violence can be expressed in threat as well as in deed. They believe that tackling injustice, poverty and inequality would lead to a safer world for all, but concede that this cannot be achieved with weapons of war. Among the signatories of the letter are Right Reverend Bill Hewitt, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and Cardinal Keith O Brien, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Archdiocese St Andrews and Edinburgh. These leaders say the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead demonstrates that security comes from faith in the vulnerability of God in Christ and not in any human creation. The Church of Scotland and others in the Christian family have long campaigned against nuclear weapons, making a clear case that they have no useful purpose for humanity. Allovus Summer Outing to SUMMERLEE MUSEUM OF SCOTTISH INDUSTRIAL LIFE on THURSDAY, 17th JUNE Buses leave Church at 10am. Obituary Common Sense Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn t always fair; and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouth wash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally give up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his son, Reason; his wife, Discretion; and his daughter, Responsibilit y. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, I m A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing. 7
