1 WESTERN SPIRE June 2017 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit ~Acts 2:4 Brothers and Sisters of WPC, This is it! We are officially beginning our celebration of our two hundredth year! On Sunday, June 4th, at 4:00 p.m., we will be gathering together to praise God and to worship in celebration of our bicentennial. In the eight months since I became your pastor, I find myself, from time to time, wandering out to the foyer at the front of the church. Occasionally there is a reason, like to glance at the worship attendance numbers, or to look at the plaque on the front of the building that commemorates the marriage of Winston Churchill s grandparents. But more often than not, I go out to simply look at the faces of the former pastors of Western Presbyterian Church. Sometimes I go to look at those faces for encouragement; sometimes for inspiration; sometimes so I can just remember who they were and when they were here! It is comforting to look at those former pastors and know that their ministries and their presence here was ordained by God. It is a reminder that God continues to work through the ages, and that it won t end with us! The Pentecost story from the book of Acts is a great one. It can tend to be a bit violent (a rushing wind, tongues of fire!). But it is also one that affirms our interconnectedness with all of humanity. When the apostles go out into the street, each speaking a language that was foreign to him, but not to the people of many nations gathered on the street, it was a reminder that God is speaking a word to all people. And that word is an old word but it is a new word, too. I know that doesn t quite make sense on the surface, but bear with me here. It is a word that is as old as time itself. It was the word that God breathed into the nothingness to create the world. But it is a new word that is ever changing and constantly moving. That word has been brought to us, in this time and this place, and we will, one day, hand it off to someone new. But for now, the Spirit is moving in and among us, challenging us, stretching us, and growing us. I am so excited to be celebrating these past two hundred years with you, and while I know that I won t live to see what the next two hundred years bring, I am equally excited to be laying the foundation for them with you. 4 WPC SPRING RUMMAGE/BAKE SALE I would like to thank everyone who donated, helped set up tables, clothes racks, signs, and items, helped price things, helped cashier, helped keep things tidy and organized during the sale, baked goodies, and publicized the event. I also want to thank everyone who helped clean up on Saturday after our $3.00 bag day sale ended. We took 3 loads to Good Will in Macedon after our sale closed and the coats we didn't sell went to Green Angels for distribution to needy people locally. If you have any suggestions where some of our unsold items could be donated besides giving most of it to Good Will, please let me know for consideration. Tricia Owen, President WPC Women's Association tsharpy@aol.com DATE CHANGE FOR WPC 2017 FALL RUMMAGE/BAKE SALE In an effort to bring in the most foot traffic to the WPC rummage/bake sales, I am endeavoring to coordinate with both the Episcopal Church and the Methodist Church in Palmyra by having all 3 churches hold their rummage/bake sale events at the same time. This could not be accomplished completely for our recent spring rummage/bake sale but will be achieved for our 2017 fall sale. In doing so, our established fall dates of October 26-28, 2017 had to be changed. The new dates will be October 19-21, I ask that you please mark this change on your calendars. Thanks, everyone. Tricia Owen, President WPC Women's Association Come celebrate with us! As many of you know John and I are going to get married this summer on July 21 st at 7 PM in the Sanctuary. A short reception will be held in Fellowship Hall with punch and cake. There you will have the opportunity to meet my new family. We are making this an open invitation to all of our church family (that means you) to come and celebrate as we take that next step in life. I have been using Facebook as the invitation media and I know some of you are not on the internet so that is why I am letting you know through the SPIRE. We are planning this as a relaxed setting so no need to get all dressed up, just come as you are. If you are interested in coming to the official daylong celebration, it will be held at Hughes Marina in Williamson on Saturday July 22 nd starting at 2 and eating at 4PM or there bouts. We are having a pig roast so I would ask you let me know so I can get a good head count.
