4 Special: Every few weeks, we ll bring you a brief introduction of one of the deacons currently serving MHBC. This week s deacon is Ron Hatcher , ronicins@aol.com Ron has been a member of Mount Hermon since 1985 and a deacon for 21 years. The current deacons asked him to be Deacon Ministry Coordinator for 2007 and the MHBC families Ron cares for include Parsons Russell. Ron is also our Sunday School Coordinator and teaches the Golden Circle Class; he sings in the choir and is one of Mount Hermon s trustees. Ron is a research scientist with Phillip Morris USA. He and his wife Pam live in Hunters Ridge and have a son, Corey, and a daughter, Stacy. Golf and softball are his favorite hobbies besides rooting for VA Tech football. New and Updated Prayer Concerns Brian Spivey had knee surgery Wednesday Jim Bernard had surgery on his foot last week Joanne Winn begins next series of chemo treatments tomorrow Emma Boothe, at The Laurels in physical rehab program Norman Wilkinson, the husband of Jane Wilkinson, in Johnston-Willis, ICU, serious pulmonary problems Louise Poore, the mother of Sylvia Green, went home Tuesday Marcia Becker, daughter of quilt instructor Louise Hodge, being treated for cancer; Marcia lives near Denver, CO Ginny Lambert, friend of Joan & Macy Hudson, in midst of cancer treatments Alice Dunnaway, cousin to Frances Manley, having surgery soon Harry Dudley, the father of Audie Chenery, in Norfolk hospital in serious condition with brain aneurism.

6 From the Pastor Safeguards in Place Catholic churches in Bumpass and Mineral and have been rocked by discoveries that their former priest, the Rev. Rodney Rodis, embezzled somewhere between $600,000 - $ 1 million of contributions from the parishes. Tuesday s newspaper also carried reports of charges against a Haley Ponitac executive assistant for embezzling $ And you recall seeing many other such reports in the past. Can it happen at our church? Yes, it can. It has happened in congregations, large and small. What does our church do to prevent such problems? Well, for one, we divide responsibilities for handling finances. One group of people counts and deposits funds. Another person records each contribution. Still another pays bills and facilitates financial transactions. That same person works with and reports to a Financial Resources Team and to the church as a whole. Then each year, the treasurer s financial records and bank statements are fully reviewed by an Audit Team. Why do we have such arrangements in place? -- Don t we trust people? Yes, we do, and the people responsible for each task are extremely trustworthy but not having such division of responsibilities is foolish. Even the best of us can experience weak moments of temptation and help ourselves to that which is not ours. I would never mishandle a dime of the church s money, but I will also never be a direct part of the fundhandling process. Maintaining the integrity of the system is paramount, and involving many people in the process is best. Trust is essential, and we guard it carefully at Mount Hermon Baptist Church. Aren t you glad?
