It was November of 2011 when I last changed it. The Thanksgiving holiday is next week and while doing some research on the holiday traditions, I ran across the proclamation below from Although a Territory, Michigan would be first in the Midwest to proclaim an annual Thanksgiving beginning in Mr. Cass had been born in New Hampshire and was familiar with the New England tradition. PROCLAMATION BY LEWIS CASS Governor in and over the Territory of Michigan A PROCLAMATION In conformity with a resolution of the Legislative Council, and the usage which has prevailed in this Territory, I do hereby appoint Thursday, the 25th day of November next, a day of

PUBLIC THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER And I recommend to the inhabitants of the Territory that, refraining from all labor inconsistent with the duties and solemnities of the day, they repair to their respective houses of public worship, and unite in suitable acknowledgments to the "Giver of every good gift," for the favor and privileges He has granted to us as a people. For the establishment of a government sufficiently free for all the objects of rational liberty, and yet strong enough to repel external assaults, and to repress internal dissensions. For the mission and mediation of His Son, our Saviour, for the revelation of His own will in the gospel, and for the influence and extension of the Christian religion, the true foundation of our hopes here, and of our happiness hereafter. For the means of education and instruction, and for the general diffusion of information, by which all classes of our citizens may be taught their duties and their rights, vice and immorality may be suppressed, virtue encouraged, and the salutary requisitions and restraints of the laws promoted. For the prevalence of social order and general prosperity, for the favorable seed time and abundant harvest, and for the employment and subsistence, which are everywhere offered to industry and enterprise. For the amicable relations which exist between the United States and the powers of the earth, for our exemption from war and all other calamities by which, in the providence of God, nations are punished for national crimes; and for our general progress in all the elements of improvement and prosperity. And while with humble acknowledgments, we recall the past and, enjoy the present, let us implore the divine blessing upon the future: That our national, political and religious advantages may be preserved, and the fair inheritance we possess, and which will become an example or a warning to the

And that the great moral causes, which are now in operation throughout the civilized world, and which appear destined to produce important changes in the character and condition of the human race, may be so guided as to promote religious and political freedom, social order, and all those institutions which increase, while they attest the prosperity of individuals and of nations. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the great seal of the Territory to be affixed. Done at Detroit, in the said Territory, this 25th day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty. LEW. CASS. By the Governor, J. T. Mason Secretary of the Territory. Please take time in your own way to offer your thanks for the many blessings we have. Thank you for your support in commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Respectfully, Bruce B. Butgereit, Executive Director History Remembered, Inc. Grand Rapids, MI The Michigan Civil War Reenactor Conference - Those who attended the Civil War reenactor conference held on Saturday, November 10 not only left with a full schedule of upcoming events but were treated to some great tasting doughnuts and
4 News from the Michigan Civil War Sesquicentennial History Partners - 'att... Page 4 of 13 cider courtesy of the Friends of Michigan History, Inc. We also heard about some new events as well as upcoming historical programs across the state. The next Michigan Civil War Reenactor Conference: Saturday, November 9, 2013 Be sure to mark your calendars and plan on joining us. We understand that some of you were confused over there being two conferences this year - we were too!! We were not contacted by either the coordinator or the organization that is supporting this other endeavor. In fact, the other coordinator had stated in 2010, after many years of putting together the conference, he was ready for a break and with the arrival of the Sesquicentennial; it made sense to open the conference to other organizations as well. This other coordinator was also a member of the History Partners but suddenly and without explanation, resigned from the committee. For most of you, having two different reenactments at Antietam, Shiloh or Gettysburg just a week or two apart is nothing new. In most cases, it is only a difference of the vision and mission between the two event sponsors. In either case, the end result is the same and that is to provide the best educational event possible for the public with the needs of the participants in mind. We are confident the same applies to the reenactor conference. We are however, concerned that by having two calendars of events, there will be confusion as to which one has the latest information, updates or additions. And of course by having two conferences, there is the chance that some units and
5 News from the Michigan Civil War Sesquicentennial History Partners - 'att... Page 5 of 13 organizations may choose to attend only one which will result in an incomplete discussion regarding events and more. Although we are unsure of future efforts by the other coordinator, the Michigan Civil War History Partners, officially recognized by the Michigan Historical Commission, will continue to host the annual Michigan Civil War Reenactors Conference. You can be sure that our website will contain the most up-to-date information as provided by you and other groups. And at least for the duration of the Sesquicentennial, the Civil War Circular will be distributed monthly by History Remembered, Inc. as another communication tool. Our new conference logo - The purpose of the History Partners has been and will continue to be the commemoration of Michigan in the Civil War. Our goal is to facilitate communication for the promotion of your events. We believe that there are enough events and enough diversity in the types of organizations that are involved in sharing our proud history - living historians, museums, roundtables, libraries, historical societies, and reenactors - that our conference is inclusive of all.

Our website: History Partners To post an event: Keith G. Harrison Questions about or to submit something for the circular: Bruce B. Butgereit A Great Day in Detroit - Saturday, November 3 dawned with bright sunshine and some cool temperatures. Close to fifty members of the Department of Michigan, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War snd reenactors made up the Civil War section in the Metro Detroit Veterans Day parade. Camps 1, 2, 14, 17, 22, 67, 135, 139, 145, 180, and 427 were represented. (My apologies if I missed anyone. I put this list together from trying to remember who I saw.) Members of the 4th Michigan Infantry and the 102nd United States Colored Troops were present as well. It is always rewarding to see what seems to be a thousand members of area Junior ROTC programs marching in formation. Following the parade, many went to either American or Lafayette Coney Island to enjoy a lunch a Civil War soldier would never have had considered - a Coney dog with all the trimmings.
7 News from the Michigan Civil War Sesquicentennial History Partners - 'att... Page 7 of 13 At 1:30 PM, a crowd of close to 150 gathered at the G.A.R. Building to witness the raising of the U.S. flag over the building for the first time in over 50 years. Some highlights of the event included a Color Guard from Cass Technical High School Junior ROTC program raising the 34-star flag and recording artist and songwriter Michelle Penn singing the Star Spangled Banner. Sister Celestine Hollings, Past National President of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, was recognized for her heroic efforts over the years to save the building from demolition.
