Ronald Rafferty Mark Sperry, DCE Deje Jensen, Preschool Director Kerry Good Melissa Riedesel Grace Gotoski ADVANCING THROUGH ADVERSITY! 2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-10 Being "human," most of us do not like to focus on our areas of weakness. Most of us tend to try and solve the problems on our own; and then, sometimes, when we identify a deficiency in our life, we stop at nothing to correct the issue, the problem, or the weakness. Our drive is to be the very best that we can be or at least be as "normal' as we can be. The problem with that line of thinking is that it leads us down a path of self sufficiency and that we can do things best on our own. I mean after all, Doesn't the Good LORD want us to solve the problems we encounter? While it is true that through God dramatic changes can occur in the lives of His children; we ourselves must NOT take credit or blame for the power to change. Our own strength is weak and faulty. John 15:5 - Jesus speaks, I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in Him; he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. The strength of God is limitless! 2 Cor 4:7 - But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves." We can trust this statement because of Paul's credentials in adversity. The Apostle Paul had been imprisoned, beaten, shipwrecked and persecuted. (I thought I had it bad when the doctors told me my kidneys had shut down because of a rare blood disease.) The Apostle Paul did not go to dialysis; but, he struggled with an ongoing personal ailment throughout his life, which he referred to as his "thorn in the flesh." Why did the Lord allow these things to happen to the Apostle Paul? I have also thought, what have I done to cause this chaos in my life? The olé "WHY ME LORD? scenario. In the case of the Apostle Paul, the Lord used all of these things in his life to keep him centered, grounded on God's divine power and not his own. That is a great reminder not only for me; but for all of us. Pride puts us in opposition to God! Ask yourself as you read this, What weaknesses are present in your life that the Father may be using to keep your eyes on Him? It may sound a little strange; but, praise God today for those very things that bring you into complete dependence upon HIM alone!!!!!! Serving Christ Jesus and HIS CHURCH, Pastor Rafferty

Your willingness to help with this project helped to brighten the day for many and brought a smile to their faces on May Day. A special thank you to Jean Passig who made the May Baskets this year. Your willingness to serve with this project is very much appreciated. Grace Human Care Committee * * * I would like to thank everyone who sent cards, gifts or remembered me in anyway on my Confirmation. I thank you for your thoughtfulness. Katelyn Good Kidney Donor Specifics! The concept of being a donor is a very sensitive subject and indeed will take hours of compassionate prayer. I have had many ask what it takes to be a donor. Mostly out of curiosity, I would think. If the thought has crossed your mind, or a friend of a friend has mentioned this strange but real modern life idea of donating a kidney, I have included the contact information for my "transplant coordinator." She can answer any questions that you, your friend, or family member may have about being a kidney donor for me. Angela Sweeting, RN FAX: angela-sweeting@uiowa.edu Carol and I thank you for your ongoing prayers as we continue to deal with the immediate situation! Peace and Healing in Jesus, Pastor

4 Fatherhood Is Both A Previledge And A Responsibility Most young children want to be like their dad; therefore, the wise father will carefully consider the example he is setting. Likewise, men without children must also remember that others, young and old, are watching and listening. A Christian's life should make people thirsty to know more about God and their faith. When the disciples failed to recognize the significance of little ones, Jesus became indignant and said, "Allow the little children to come to Me, do not hinder them, for the KINGDOM of God belongs to little ones such as these." (Mark 10:14) If we have this attitude, we will appreciate the young and do all we can to lead them to faith. It is important to help children understand early on what it means to TRUST in Christ Jesus as SAVIOR. Many of life s situations can be teachable moments. When a family faces financial challenges, children can learn that God is the PROVIDER who always takes care of them. When problems or questions arise, they need to know that HOLY SCRIPTURE has the answers. THE WORD, not the world! When our children are being influenced by the wrong kinds of friends or activities, Dad's loving intervention can guide them in how to walk in GOD'S WILL! A father's correction and instruction are essential because obedience to God doesn t come naturally. Parenting is too important to leave to chance. So think about qualities that you want to pass down, and intentionally start modeling them. It will be a joy to see your children imitate you! Father's Day Blessings, Pastor Rafferty Grace Camp is participating in Birdies for Charity" again this year. The pledge cards are available at the Welcome Center. Please contact a Grace Camp board member with any questions or to pick up a pledge card. Thank you for your continued support of the Birdies for Charity program and Grace Camp MILES OF DIMES!! Grace Camp is Re-inventing Miles of Dimes! Miles of Dimes is a fun and easy way to give back to Grace Camp. When Grace Lutheran Camp was purchased, Miles of Dimes was originally started to collect money to build a retreat center. That goal was reached, and many more great buildings, gardens and recreational areas have been added since then. The Grace Camp Board is not making any big additions, but as time goes by, things need replacing and a general sprucing up. Some things that we are currently putting funds toward are new paddles for canoes, a new volleyball net and volleyballs and a new bench swing for the playground. New collection boxes are available at the Welcome Center at church, and once your box is filled with dimes (we take pennies, nickels, quarters and dollars, too!), just bring the box into church and deposit your change into the mason jar on the Welcome Center in the foyer. Then take your collection box back home and repeat. Thank you for all of your support! Grace Camp Pancake Breakfast June 19, :00-11:30 a.m. Grace Camp Pavilion

6 Building Healthy Families: In her book, The Power of a Positive Mom, Karol Ladd notes the importance of intentionally planning for summer activities with your children. She suggests making a large poster with The Summer of 2016 written across the top. Invite your kids to join you in making a list of fun activities you want to do over the next two months. Also include some summer rules, like how much television time will be allowed, what chores will be required, and how late is too late to sleep in. A little planning will help you enjoy these months off and avoid that regretful September statement, Where did the summer go? Prayers during the church services on Sundays. It has been a while since I mentioned the common practice of praying for folks on Sunday morning. I am encouraged to pray for one and all; and I will gladly do so if someone requests that they be included in the corporate prayers. So, please, if you or a loved one or friend want to be included in Sunday's prayers, just let me know. You can text me, call me, , or visit with me. I appreciate your help in this matter immensely. Pastor Rafferty Walkers are needed to help pass out flyers promoting our church during the 4th of July Parade. Please contact Tracy Meggers for more information on this event. Volunteers are a very important part of the church. Volunteers help usher during worship service, teach Sunday school, run the audio visual equipment, help prepare luncheons, serve on Boards and Committees, plant flowers, water plants, assist in the church office and so much more. Without our volunteers the church would not function well. You read about the church s need for volunteers in the monthly Newsletter, (This Newsletter is no exception.), and in the weekly News & Notes. You see the great need the church has; but, yet, you are still hesitant to volunteer your time and talent. Why? God wants us to use our talents. 1 Peter 4:10, As each has received a gift, use it to serve another, as good stewards of God s varied grace. God made us, created us for His purpose. He gave us our talents so that we could do His work. Ephesians 2:10 says, We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. When you serve and volunteer, know that God has prepared the way! For many of us volunteering is not always easy. Finding a place where we can use the talents God gave us can be a challenge, but know that God is with you. Wherever you chose to volunteer, God is there to guide you on your journey. Using your talents to teach, play music, be on a Board or Committee, watering plants, or whatever you chose to do you are blessing your church and fulfilling God s word. If you are looking for ways to volunteer at church, but are not sure what you would like to do, please feel free to speak with Pastor, call the church office, or speak with any Board Member. They will be happy to assist in anyway they can.
