1 St. Patrick s Episcopal Church 232 East Main Street Lebanon, OH May, 2015 There s a beautiful woods trail behind Berry school. It loops over a few streams and passes by a small horseshoe waterfall. This wet spring the streams and falls have flowed more than usual. I walk this trail a few times a week and every time I thank God for such a lovely hike within walking distance of my home in town. A few weeks ago the wildflowers began appearing. First out were the bloodroots. There were huge patches of them. So I was delighted to come across this poem by Wendell Berry. APRIL WOODS: MORNING Birth of color out of night and the ground. Marilyn Lee, Editor Sunday Worship Services 8:00 a.m. & The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal Bishop of Southern Ohio The Rev. Jacqueline Matisse, Rector Lisa Cronin, Vestry, Senior Warden Bill Lasher, Vestry, Jr. Warden Eric Johnson, Choir Director Jack Hasty, Organist Vestry Marjorie Donovan, Music Director Emeritus Trisha Goodwin Vestal Hipp Susan Sorrell, Financial Secretary Arnold Huckeby Jill Lane Arnold Huckeby, Treasurer Matt Lang Linda Powers Bill Lasher, Stewardship Gretchen Hautzinger, Office Manager Jill Lane, Children s Education Harry Pritchard Fred Smith Luminous the gatherings of bloodroot newly risen, green leaf, white flower in the sun, the dark grown absent. I choose a delightful topic for this month s article because it s the Easter season and we celebrate the absence of the dark, in the coming of spring and in the resurrection of Jesus. In faith we know, that even though there may be dark places in our lives, Jesus resurrection shows us they will not, can not have the final say. In him, the darkness and the light are both alike. They both contain all we need to grow into new life. This we can trust, even when we don t understand how it can happen. Richard Foster, in his book, The Celebration of Discipline, writes that celebration is at the heart of the way of Christ. He entered the world on a high note of jubilation: I bring you good news of a great joy, cried the angel, which shall come to all the people. He left the world bequeathing his joy to the disciples: These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. Our Mission: To take the love of Christ into the World

2 Foster goes on to say that celebration, itself, is a discipline that grows out of all the others. When we practice meditation, prayer, fasting, study, simplicity, solitude, service, confession, worship to name some of the disciplines, we will find joy. And in our joy we find ways to celebrate. We will celebrate at St. Patrick s this weekend with One Hundred Thousand Welcomes. It is always so good to be part of the community coming together in this event. I am so grateful for all who give their time and resources. It s a lot of work and a lot of fun. We will also celebrate two baptisms in the month of May. David and Adrienne Johnson s granddaughter Sage will be baptized on the 24th and Nick and Kristin Felty s daughter Grace on the 17th. May we find many ways to celebrate the gift of new life in this season! I pass on another poem, Welcome Morning by Anne Sexton. There is a joy in all: in the hair I brush each morning, in the Cannon towel, newly washed, that I rub my body with each morning, in the chapel of eggs I cook each morning, in the outcry from the kettle the heats my coffee each morning, in the spoon and the chair that cry hello there, Anne each morning, in the godhead of the table that I set my silver, plate, cup upon each morning. All this is God, right here in my pea-green house each morning and I mean though often forget, to give thanks to faint down by the kitchen table in a prayer of rejoicing as the holy birds at the kitchen window peck into their marriage of seeds. So while I think of it, let me paint a thank you on my palm for this God, this laughter of the morning, lest it go unspoken. The Joy that isn t shared, I ve heard, dies young. (see Jackie continued) JUST AROUND THE CORNER by Bill Lasher If there is one thing that glues the human race together, it is language. True, there are more than 6,000 languages in the world, but each of us knows at least one of those. Our communications system lies at the heart of our great advancements, from books to texting, from opera to space flight. There are currently between 700 and 800 million people who speak English as their first or second language, so we have a good number of people to talk to. There are, however, a few questions about our language that I d like to bring up. First, whose English is the right one? You may have noticed that I just ended two sentences with prepositions: to and up.. The rule says, Never end a sentence in a preposition, but that is not a rule of English it s a rule of Latin! Around 1775, some members of the British Royal Society decided that English should follow the rules of Latin, and began to publicize their ideas. They also criticized Shakespeare s grammar (!) and proposed logical rules for English. One of those was that two negatives always make a positive. By that rule we aren t allowed to say I can t get no satisfaction, because of the double negative. But most languages use two negatives to make a statement more negative, as English has for most of its history. Why does this matter to us? Because those rules miss the most important thing about any language: how it is created. The creation of language in humans is about as impressive as the Creation itself. Every time a baby is born, we have a new creator of language. We don t teach children English or French or Spanish. They learn it on their own, based on what they hear around them. Every child s brain creates a working model of the local language, and no two of those models are exactly the same! Each human brain puts that model together, and each time it happens the language is changed a little bit. That s why Shakespeare is hard to understand, and Chaucer is even more obscure: 400 or 600 years of little changes add up to major difference in our language. As a linguist, I look at the differences in the world s languages and the differences within those language as a miracle. Every one of us has a slightly different version of English, as we each did it our way! When you think about that, you begin to realize that even the dictionary is only a short list of what we know about our language. In fact, I suggest that you think of the dictionary as a User s Guide, not as a Bible. Remember that the Commandments are written on our hearts, not just in stone. That brings us to my last point: our teachers. Despite our learning English on our own, as small children, we still need to learn to read and write, so our teachers are still critical to expanding our knowledge of the language and of the world. After that, we can read, we can dream, and we can write about our dreams. Our language is not in the dictionary; it is in us, and in our children.

5 THANK YOU ERIC JOHNSON!!! May 3rd Eric Johnson will direct the choir for the last time. For four years Eric has worked diligently with the choir to bring the joy of good music to our worship. He has pursued a high standard of excellence and given more hours than we know. He has worked magic on Sundays when the choir was exceptionally small due to members schedules. He has offered the gift of hospitality to bring good fellowship to the group. Eric, we thank you heartily for your gift! Eric also brought Damien Stout to us. Damien is a gifted musician with nine years experience directing an Episcopal choir. He will be taking over our choir. Please thank Eric when you see him and welcome Damien. Even better, if you are a singer, think of offering your gift! INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY WEEK Our next week to host Interfaith Hospitality is May 10. Susan Sorrell and Nick Felty are our Interfaith coordinators and will be setting up the schedule as soon as possible. If you are a regular volunteer in this ministry and are able to help that week please let Susan or Nick know as soon as you can. If you have never helped with Interfaith and want to have this experience let them know how you can help. We need overnight hosts on Sunday, the 10th and Saturday the 16th. We need food prepared for those same evenings and a few people or families to host during the dinner hour. Many families have been helped to find housing through the Interfaith ministry. We are proud to be a part of it and your participation is encouraged. Jesus was clear that when we serve in this way we are serving him! Jackie IN-REACH MINISTRY Do you need help or know of other church members who need temporary assistance with transportation, meals, child care, yard work, household chores, etc? If so, please contact Susan Sorrell, May In Reach Ministry coordinator. Her contact information can be found in the Church Directory or by calling St. Patrick s. WARREN COUNTY RECYCLES LATEX PAINT Warren County now offers latex paint recycling. Simply drop off your paint at the Warren County Administration Building, 406 Justice Drive, Lebanon. The drop off center is located in the rear of the parking lot. For questions call Warren County Solid Waste Lisa AL-ANON WORKS Al-Anon is a support group for family members and friends of persons suffering from addiction. Al-Anon recovery is about living our lives, focusing on ourselves, building our strengths, and asking and receiving help when needed. This sounds very selfish, right? But, as we are involved with the person that s suffering, we begin to focus more and more on his/her behavior. We worry, we intercede, we try to please, we cover up, we smooth over, or attempt to rescue him/her from trouble. We take on responsibilities that aren t ours. This has to do with boundaries. One of the slogans that addresses this issue is: Don t do what they can do for themselves. When we stop living our own lives and become preoccupied with someone else s, our behavior is motivated by fear. This is not love; it s an obsession and extremely self-destructive. We may be thinking we have some power over someone else s drinking or using illegal drugs. We don t! Genuine healthy self-love allows us to be more fully ourselves and enables us to love whereas enmeshment with the alcoholic or user does just the opposite. (Excerpted from How Al-Anon Works for Family & Friends of Alcoholics) *** Next month s topic: Detachment*** Erna HOMEWORK CLUB Our last day and picnic at the Bennings will be May 19th. On that day we send each child home with a summer goodie bag. We put books, small games, wrapped candy, miscellaneous stuff in the bags. If you would like to contribute please give to the Bennings or leave at church. We received a grant from the Warren County Foundation and all 13 children will be attending Camp Joy in July. Thank you for the wonderful support you gave the program all year and special thanks to the tutors. Jean & Larry
