1 BONNEVILLE BANTER Monthly Newsletter of the Bonneville Austin-Healey Club June/July, Vol. 33 No. 4 PRESIDENT S COMMENTS: Well I finally had to buy a new every-day car. My trusty 1996 Chrysler Sebring, with 88,000 miles, finally just gave up. I told Doug Okay! I m buying a new car. I did not want to go through the usual hassle with the salesman. So being a determined 75-year old woman, I called the closest dealership and made an appointment with a salesman at Larry H. Miller Ford and Lincoln Sales in Sandy; very close to where we live. I met with the man told him I wanted a Red or Black Ford Fusion Titanium. After somewhat of a hassle and my telling them we re out of here. We all backed down and I bought it! Now the real problem is trying to learn 20 years worth of technology. Had I bought a new car every few years I wouldn t have to learn so much in one fell swoop. This car has a back-up camera; keyless start; Bluetooth phone connection; heated and air conditioned seats; memory seat and mirror controls for three different drivers; Tire pressure monitor system; voice commands; adaptive cruise control; 2.0L Eco-Boost I-4 with 240 hp; 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with paddle shift on the steering wheel when I go into the Sports mode. Do you think at my age I can learn all of this and then some? I try reading the manual, but I swear it is an inch thick and it is printed on tissue paper with language I don t understand. What the hell is SYNC with MyFord Touch? I have had the car about a month now. I had Doug go to the grocery store with me to tell me if I am staying in my lane and to help me with parking. You see this midsize car is bigger than my Sebring. Coming out of the store with a cart full of groceries I started to laugh; I told Doug I forgot to learn how to open the trunk! 2 Carol and I took a Trans-Atlantic cruise to celebrate our upcoming 45 th wedding anniversary. We left from Houston and had stops in Bermuda, Liverpool, Wales, Hamburg, Le Harve and finally to London for a few extra days and then flew home. The seas were calm but the weather was cold and damp. I always wondered why the Brits developed such great sports cars and motorcycles with such crappy weather. Oh well, I m glad they did. We had a wonderful time so I guess I m not too sorry I missed the April and May BAHC activities. Our next activity is the British Field Day on June 18 th in Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Registration opens at 8:00 am and the car show runs from 9:00 am to 3:00pm. This is always a fun event with a wide variety of classic British sports cars and bikes. A highlight is always the BAHC display of Austin Healeys. The show is for British cars in any condition from trailer-queen to project car so please dust off your Healey and participate. You will enjoy it. Be thinking about ideas for future BAHC activities. 3 MINUTES of MAY 10 th BAHC MEETING Members in Attendance: Myra Strauchen, Jim Revel, Ann and Doug Lewis, Dave and Sandy Maxwell, Don Colman, Jim Thornton, Joe Morley, Dil Strasser and newcomer, Kevin Davis. Meeting was brought to order at 7:33 by President, Ann Lewis. beneath the sending unit was at fault so a new one (after a couple of tries and more than a couple swear words) was cut out of a sheet of cork and deployed. The gasket fixed the problem. All in all, a very productive tech session. Attendees included Dave Maxwell, Don Colman, Jim Thornton, Terry Hartt, Don Hughes, Craig Ward and Jon Hanson. Thanks to all that came and particular thanks to Dave Maxwell for his expertise and hard work! Treasurer s Report: Funds adequate for club operations. The BAHC June/July newsletter will be forthcoming. Our June activity will be British Field Day, Liberty Park, June 18, 9:00am to 3:00pm. Registration from 8:00am. Our July meeting will be held at Joe Morley s on the 12 th. Due to problems with our meeting at the Citris Grill, it was decided to schedule the September meeting to the shop/patio at the Colman residence where we will order pizza. Meeting adjourned. Submitted by Don Colman P a g e TECH SESSION April 23 A tech session was held at SECTEN to identify and fix a problem with Jim Thornton's left-rear brake. Evidently, the brakes were a mite too effective. When the foot was off the gas pedal, the car came to a screaming halt! Dave Maxwell identified the problem: a faulty brake cylinder. This was replaced (again, in large part by Dave) and the problem was solved. Another issue was the accumulating gas fumes in the boot of Jim's Healey. The gasket

4 Territory. This was all politics..an attempt to divert the nation's attention from the issue of state s rights and slavery. Points of interest were the Stagecoach Inn (Mark Twain stayed here once) and the Commissary/Museum, where for a modest fee, you can check things out and watch an informative 10-minute video on the history of Camp Floyd. A visit to Camp Floyd is highly recommended. After lunch, we continued west-northwest past Mercur to the turnoff to Ophir. A short winding uphill road led us to this old mining town that has a current population of around 20. The wind-chill was pretty bad but we were troopers and got a good look at this quaint old mining town. Ophir was named for the nearby canyon and mining district, where gold was discovered in the 1860s. The mining district was named for the biblical Ophir, from where King Solomon brought back gold to Israel. Article and photos: J. Hanson OPHIR DRIVE: April 16 We had a good turnout for the Ophir drive. Attendees included Jim and Sheryl Thornton, Don and Marian Colman, Doug and Ann Lewis, Dave and Sandy Maxwell, Don and Julie McEligot, Keith Mott and Jon Hanson. Two parties were down from parts north: Idaho Falls (McEligot's) and Logan (Mott). Kudos on these folks for making that long hike! After scoping out Ophir, we continued on Highway 73 to Stockton, where we pulled over to dash into a convenience store - mostly I believe to get out of the cold and warm up for a few minutes. After that, we broke as a group and headed through Tooele to Lake Point and took our individual routes back to SLC. This was a fun drive and highly recommended..but possibly later in the year when it is a bit warmer! Article and photos: J. Hanson We all met up at 90th South and Redwood Road and proceeded south under the leadership of Jim and Sheryl Thornton. At the turnoff on Highway 73, we headed west through Cedar Fort to Camp Floyd State Park where we had lunch. This camp has some serious history. In 1858, then President James Buchanan dispatched nearly one-third of the U.S. Army to suppress the rumored rebellion in the Utah 4 P a g e

Please keep Ted and Judy in your thoughts and prayers PARK CITY CLASSIC CAR SHOW The Park City Classic Car Show sponsored by the Wasatch Mountain Jaguar Register will be held on Saturday, August 27 th on lower Main Street in Park City. This application is extended to you by the WMJR for you to apply to enter your Classic Car in the Park City Classic Car Show on August 27, 2016 from 10am to 3pm. Several car clubs have already been invited. The Show will be open to the general public at no cost.the show is primarily focused on Classic and Vintage British and European cars but we also welcome original American examples and newer British and European exotic "supercars" but no muscle cars or hotrods. We reserve the right to accept or reject applications consistent with diversity and balance of marques. People s Choice and various Best of Class and Class runner up trophies will be awarded. Cars must be in place between 8:30 & 9:30am on lower Main Street. Awarding of trophies will begin at 2:00pm and all cars will have to vacate the street or pay to park parallel by 3pm or risk being ticketed or towed as enforced by Park City. Any applicant or guest that registers that would be willing to volunteer for 1 hour of assigned traffic control time will be greatly appreciated to help us meet Park City s requirements. We have up to 32 hours of assigned volunteer time that we need to fill, so we will appreciate your willingness to help. If you care to enter your car please send $25 per car by 6/10/16 with this application. Other car club Members and past participants have also been invited, so the sooner you register the better as space is limited to the first 75 cars that register.
