Celebrations Await Our P.E.O. Sisterhood By Diane Browning, F, President, Utah State Chapter P.E.O. I hope that each of you survived the winter and are looking ahead to celebrate a new season of P.E.O.! Hopefully, we can put this dreary winter behind us and move forward to review our past year and develop new goals for the coming year. After reading all the chapter president letters this past month, I know you have been very busy celebrating new members into your chapter, expressing a loving concern for each sister, sponsoring candidates for philanthropies and either donating to the 150 fund or hosting a Sesquicentennial Historical Program. Many of you have attended the Founders Day luncheons hosted by Chapter M for Top of Utah Reciprocity or Chapter Z for the Salt Lake Area Reciprocity. I was so impressed by each program and was happy to be able to attend them both this year. Great job Chapters M and Z. In February many chapter corresponding secretaries and treasurers attended the End of Year workshops that were held in Ogden and Salt Lake City. These workshops gave instructions and tips for a successful submission of Annual Reports. There were also several who attended the Spring Training workshop held by the state last month. This workshop focused on training local Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - April 2019 Return to Table of Contents Page 1 of 10
2 chapter presidents, vice presidents, corresponding secretaries, and treasurers. Also there was a philanthropy portion wherein tips were given to local chapter philanthropy committees by a few of the state philanthropy chairs. I hope these workshops gave each attendee the skills for a productive year ahead. As spring continues to blossom in the month to come, don t forget the celebration to be held at the 2019 Convention of Utah State Chapter. I look forward to seeing you Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28 for fun, festivities and a little bit of business as we Celebrate Our Seven Sisters! A sister is a gift to the heart, a friend to the spirit, a golden thread to the meaning of life. - Isadora James Vernal s Chapter C Stands for Community By Julena Pope, C Our chapter was established May 8, A community with no railroad, primitive communication, and few people was an unlikely place for an organization with its roots in the Midwest. We have been thriving since then with a current membership of 27, including two nonresident members. Our chapter meets twice monthly (with the exception of June-August). Meetings are hosted in the homes of our sisters. During the winter months we switch night meetings to noon luncheons to avoid the bitter cold Basin nights. This allows all sisters the opportunity to participate in our meetings that otherwise may not be able to attend the night meetings. We actively support P.E.O. projects by the sale of a special, unique pasta as our fundraiser. Although the local economy is slow, we have had great support from the community for P.E.O. goals and charities. We have very fun holiday celebrations as seen in our photos below from our last St. Patrick s Day party and Mardi Gras extravaganza. Left to Right: Rula Bullock, Lynda Phillips, Cindy Mortensen, Sherry Perry, Sally Wither, Mary Klein, Samantha Scott, Ruth Ann Chivington. Utah P.E.O. 3 Though we are far on the outskirts of the state, we attend as many state functions as possible. Of course we are always represented at State Convention and enjoy getting together with our sisters from other chapters. We extend an invitation to our sisters statewide to come visit our chapter meetings. Chapter AM Celebrates 20 th Birthday By Debbie Dunn, President Chapter AM Chapter AM celebrated their 20 th birthday party at the Thursday, March 7 meeting complete with delicious birthday cake and fruit. The program In The Beginning - A Celebration of Chapter AM s 20 th Anniversary was presented by charter and still active member Mary Bemis. We enjoyed hearing how our chapter was organized. Mary also presented each sister with a verse reminding everyone of our special sisterly bond and friendship. There were 19 members in attendance and five visitors. Happy 20 th birthday, Chapter AM! 4 Carol Putnam Fund Nominee Announced By Sandy Nichols, V, Carol Putnam Fund Chair Chapter P nominated Amy Hanges to the Carol Putnam Fund. In 2014, Amy decided to have a career. She returned to college, and after taking more health-related classes, she started working for Visiting Angels. She found joy in working for clients and looking for ways to go the extra mile for them. Amy ultimately has chosen to go into Nursing. She has been accepted for admission to the Practical Nurse Program at Davis Technical College. Amy's goal is to earn a Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate. The Carol Putman Fund Committee is pleased to award money toward Amy's education. When I called Bonnie Rembacz, Chapter P, about our decision, she could not have been more thrilled. She met Amy while Amy was caring for a friend s mother while working as a Visiting Angel. And so the relationship with P.E.O. began. What a wonderful thing we are able to do for women. Plan for P.E.O. International Convention By Stephanie Halton, U, Vice President, Utah State Chapter P.E.O. The 74th Convention of International Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood will be held Thursday-Saturday, September in Des Moines, Iowa. With a theme of Welcome Home, this gathering will celebrate 150 years of P.E.O. The Utah delegation will be comprised of the State President, State Vice President, four Past Utah State Presidents, and delegates from Chapters C, P, W, AL, and AK. Members from any chapter are encouraged to participate as non-voting members (visitors). Attending an International Convention is a P.E.O. life-changing event! Visit or reference the March/April issue of The Record for detailed information regarding registration fees, lodging, sessions, etc. An informational meeting will be held at 4 p.m. following the Utah State Convention meetings on Saturday, April 27 at the Davis Conference Center. If you plan to go to Des Moines as a delegate or as a non-voting member (visitor), please attend this meeting as valuable information will be shared. Contact Stephanie Halton at stephaniehpeo@gmail.com if you have any questions. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - April 2019 Return to Table of Contents Page 4 of 10

Change of Entertainment at Banquet By Lisa Laird, P, Convention Coordinator As a result of scheduling conflicts, we have had a change in the Celebration Banquet entertainment. We are pleased to announce that our speaker will be Bryan Grosgebauer, a pilot with Southwest Airlines, who will present a program about his life as a pilot, including anecdotes and photos. Bryan comes highly recommended and his presentation is quite entertaining and informative. He is the son of Chapter F's Barbara Grosgebauer and we are grateful to have him on the program. We look forward to Bryan's presentation and hope you will enjoy it. Due to obligations with NASA, former astronaut Charles Precourt had to cancel his participation. Utah P.E.O. 6 SL Reciprocity Founders' Day a Work of Art By Carol Day, Z Chapter Z Provo welcomed 80 sisters to celebrate the 150th anniversary of P.E.O. on Saturday, March 9. We enjoyed learning about the character and lives our seven founders in a reading put together by Jeanne Harvey Duncan. The material was taken from "Out of the Heart" and We Who are Sisters. The reading has been annotated and added to the state archive. We heard from Mandee Grant with Better Days 2020 ( about the effort to celebrate women as leaders in Utah. We also had a taste of the art-present and-past plus a three-course meal prepared by the Utah Valley University Culinary Arts Program. Participants had the opportunity to take a quiz called Founders Keepers. The answers to the quiz are: a. Touching it for signal of distress b. Alice Coffin b. Alice Bird Babb b. Ella Stewart c. 6 (Ella dropped out of college so no degree) b. Andrew Johnson a. The moon (Apollo 11 Buzz Aldrin carried a P.E.O. centennial charm in honor of his grandmother in Florida b. 3 Bess Truman, Herbert Hoover's mother and 2 of Lincoln's granddaughters a d. (a,b,c) If you are interested in using the quiz for a chapter meeting, Chapter Z is selling packs of 10 for $2.50 available at reciprocity or state convention. Chapter Z will rent the founders aprons for $35 ($5 each) if returned clean. $50 soiled and a charge of $35 to replace an apron plus postage. contact Audrey Bailey cheraple@gmail.com Chapter Z is raising funds with personalized decals that can be ironed on shirts, jackets, pillows and much more. 7 Spring Training Found the SMART! Way By Diane Browning, F, President, Utah State Chapter After the group session, breakout sessions were held for: It was standing room only at the Spring Training Workshop when more than 75 P.E.O. sisters attended on Saturday, March 23! The state held a group session to a full house giving a PowerPoint presentation, P.E.O. the SMARTI Way. The members learned about how to form productive and attainable goals for their chapters and committees. There was also an interactive session at which members separated into small groups to create their own SMARTI Goal. It was a well received presentation. Philanthropy Committees and general membership: where state philanthropy committee members presented information about their respective philanthropies. Philanthropy adviser, Stephanie Halton, U, State Vice President also gave a PowerPoint presentation that focused on each of the philanthropies. President/Vice Presidents: were given training by Diane Browning, F, State President, for their upcoming year as presidents and vice presidents of their chapters. They were led through the president s book from the Order of the Business Meeting and ending with Installation of Officers. Many good ideas and discussions ensued. Treasurers: were lead by Cynthia Schofield, Y, State Organizer and given great tips and guidelines on money matters and using their accounting systems. Corresponding and Recording Secretaries: had a combined session with Alice Stephenson, V, State Secretary. She focused on the recording secretaries for the first part and moved toward the corresponding secretary training. Thank you to all who attended, learned and celebrated with us! Handouts were given to members and will be available on the Utah State website at in the Download Center under Officer Resources. Utah P.E.O. 8 Learn to Map Your Membership Path By Nancy Edwards-Williams, Y, PSP, State Membership Committee Chairman It s spring and time to take action! What s more exciting than planning where you want to go and getting there! Come explore with us the direction you want your chapter s membership efforts to go and, more importantly, how to get there. With the beginning of the new P.E.O. membership year, it s time to start thinking about what your chapter s membership needs are. Each chapter is unique. So, where do you start? The Local Chapter Membership Committee Workshop, Mapping Your Membership Path, to be held on Saturday afternoon, May 4, will help you find your way. At the workshop, each chapter s membership committee will have the opportunity to: meet members of the State Membership Committee face-to-face, identify what you see as your chapter s membership destination this year, and, map how you will follow the path to get there. It is every chapter s desire to be a vibrant, involved group and to expand their membership to stay strong and growing. It seems so easy for some chapters but challenging for others. Your chapter s path may be to involve more of the members you have, to build bonds between your sisters, to master a way to expand opportunities to meet potential members or something else unique to your chapter. No matter where your chapter is now, you will have the opportunity at this workshop to set a path toward where you want to be by So how do you get to be included in this exciting adventure? Mark your calendar now: Saturday, May 4, 1:30-3:30 p.m. Murray Library Auditorium, 166 E South, Murray, UT RSVP by Thursday, April 25 to Nancy Edwards-Williams, nancywms65@gmail.com or , with the number attending from your chapter (so we can be prepared with seats and handouts) Top of Utah Founders Day Celebration By Diane Browning, F, President, Utah State Chapter Top of Utah Reciprocity (TOUR) group had a wonderful turnout for their annual Founders Day luncheon. It was held at the Ogden Country Club and was hosted by Chapter M. The food was excellent and the company was delightful. Chapter M performed a skit that was cast with the Founders as angels looking down on P.E.O. at a present day meeting. The Founders gave tips on protocol to the amazed members of the chapter at the meeting who were looking to see where the voices came from. It was a very fun and informative presentation. Thank you for your hard work Chapter M and thank you to all who attended. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - April 2019 Return to Table of Contents Page 8 of 10
