Calendar / Questions? Step Up to Utah State Convention Gail Brown, P Utah State President It s time for all the chapters to step up and come together at the 79 th Annual Utah State P.E.O. Convention. This is the perfect time for networking, learning and fun for all those who attend on May 2 and 3 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton. If you re planning to arrive on Thursday May 1, please join the state board members and international representative as we top off a sweet year with a dessert and fruit social in the Zephyr room at 7:30 p.m. T-Shirt Day at State Convention Show your P.E.O. pride by wearing your Stepping Up for P.E.O. shirt on Friday. (If you are only attending on Saturday, please wear your shirt then.) Friday highlights include a keynote address by our international visitor, Ann Davidson, P.E.O. STAR Scholarship chairman. Join us for tributes and a luncheon honoring our past state presidents and Golden Girls as well as for our afternoon workshops and a business meeting. On Friday night, the no-host social begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the 6:30 Celebrating Our Successes Banquet. Mike Murphy, a local guitarist and vocalist, will entertain us with his music. Our international visitor and a scholarship recipient will share the successes of our sisterhood. Saturday begins with a tribute to our newest members (make sure to invite your newest members to join us!). The project speakers program at 10:30 a.m. is open to guests. Join us to hear inspiring speeches from our scholarship recipients and Dr. Mari Anne Phillips of Cottey College. Hear how chapters around the state have stepped up for women s education this year. 2 Saturday s luncheon honors our recipients and newest members. At 1:30 p.m., the Time of Remembrance honors our sisters who have joined Chapter Eternal. The final business meeting features information from International, the Question Box and installation of new officers. After reading all the chapter presidents letters I recently received, I am amazed at all the different ways chapters have stepped up for P.E.O. this year. Our state is full of creative women who keep their chapters focused on what it means to be a sister. It has been a privilege to serve as your state president this year and I look forward to seeing many of you at Convention. Cottey Rep to Speak at Convention By Gail Brown, P Utah State President The Utah State board is pleased to announce that Dr. Mari Anne Phillips of Cottey College will speak during our project speakers program on Saturday, May 3. (For more information about Dr. Phillips, go to Convention Information.) We encourage all Cottey alumnae to attend Convention on Saturday morning and stay for lunch. A table will be reserved at the luncheon for the Cottey committee and any alumnae who wish to sit and talk with Dr. Phillips. This is also a perfect time to invite any prospective Cottey students and parents to attend because the program is open to visitors. If your chapter has visitors who would like to attend this luncheon, please get them registered as soon as possible. Time of Remembrance is May 3 By Gayle Lichti, Z Utah State Vice President The Time of Remembrance, honoring our P.E.O. sisters who have entered Chapter Eternal, will be held during the Utah State P.E.O. Convention on Saturday, May 3 at 1:30 p.m. Prelude will begin at 1:15 p.m. This service is open to family and friends. A form has been sent to each chapter president. If one or more of your chapter sisters has passed on, please mail a completed form and a photo of each sister to Gayle Lichti, vice president, Utah State Chapter, by April 15. A digital picture is even better because it can be ed. Please note that newspaper pictures do not transfer well to the PowerPoint program. If you have any questions, contact Gayle at (801) or glichtipeo@comcast.net. We hope this will be a meaningful service for both P.E.O.s and the families of those sisters who have joined Chapter Eternal. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - April 2014 Page 2 of 8

5 P.E.O. Networking Creates Success Story By Bonnie Cavell, N This is a success story of Across-the-Miles in P.E.O. Three years ago, Hallie Johnson graduated from college in Florida. She worked various interim jobs, but could not find work in her field. Visiting Utah, she learned that the University of Utah Geography Department offers a two-year certification course, Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A fairly new field, GIS is not yet widely offered, but in growing demand: think GPS, computers and the logistics needs of transportation companies, the military or city planners. Hallie began the program with her savings, but by fall 2013, her money was running low. She told her mother in Virginia she might have to drop out a semester to work for tuition. Her mom mentioned this to a P.E.O. friend, who contacted the Utah representative for the Program for Continuing Education (PCE). Chapter N was asked to sponsor Hallie. We met her, loved her, and got her the forms. She followed through and we presented a check from PCE just in time for the January 2014 tuition deadline! Pictured (from left): Bonnie Cavill, PCE representative; Hallie Johnson, PCE recipient; Lynette Edwards, Chapter N president. Who Covers Delegates Costs? By Kimberly Albro, AE Utah State Treasurer Each local chapter shall provide for the transportation of its delegates to State Convention and shall pay a convention fee of $5/member annually. The Utah State Chapter assumes most of the remaining costs associated with attending Convention for the delegates, chairmen of the finance and A&R committees, PSPs, Honored Golden Girls, and project speakers (see Utah State Chapter P.E.O. Sisterhood Bylaw and Standing Rules, Article IX Finance, Section 2 State Convention Fees). The covered costs include: Delegates - Meals including Friday and Saturday lunch and Friday dinner, registration fee, and convention kit. Chairs of the finance and A&R committees - Meals including Friday and Saturday lunch and Friday dinner, registration fee, and convention kit. Past State Presidents - Friday lunch, registration fee, and convention kit. Honored Golden Girls - Friday lunch. If attending Friday only, State also provides registration fee. Project Speakers - Saturday lunch. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - April 2014 Page 5 of 8
6 Lodging - One night s lodging (based on double occupancy at the set convention rate) for delegates, resident PSPs, chairmen of the finance and A&R committees, living beyond the distance of 50 miles and less than 100 miles. Two nights lodging (based on double occupancy at the set convention rate) for those eligible living beyond a distance of 100 miles. See Convention Registration materials for negotiated room rates. Costs NOT covered by the Utah State Chapter include: Increased lodging expenses associated with late reservations. Increased lodging expenses for a delegate choosing: a single room, sharing a room with a non-delegate member, guest, or BIL. Increased lodging expenses related to a change in room type from the regular convention rate room. Donate to P.E.O. Philanthropies By Kimberly Albro, AE Utah State Treasurer Would you like to pay tribute to a P.E.O. sister? Have you considered making an individual donation to a P.E.O. philanthropy in her honor or in memory? The following is a brief overview of the current procedures. For International or P.E.O. Foundation Philanthropies (including Cottey College) Checks payable to the project you wish to support may be mailed directly to International along with the Individual Contribution Form. You can find the address, the form, and instructions on the Utah P.E.O. state website, in the Download Center under Philanthropies. There are two other methods of making a donation available through the International P.E.O. website, Along the left side menu of either the public page or the Members Only page, look for the Giving Opportunities menu choice. This link will take you to a page where you can choose to print a form to mail in with your donation or to make an online donation using a credit card. Whichever procedure you use, the Utah State Chapter treasurer will be notified of your donation. For Utah State Chapter Projects Administered by Utah State Chapter Donations to the Helen Abbott Fund, Carole Putnam Fund and the Utah Cottey Fund can be mailed, along with the Individual Contribution Form, to Utah State Chapter Treasurer Kimberly Albro, 9212 S. Belton Lane, Sandy, Make checks payable to Utah State Chapter P.E.O. If you have any problems finding these forms or navigating the website, please get in touch with your chapter technology contact or Kimberly Albro at (801) or kimberlyalbro@gmail.com. You can find a link to the list of Honorarium or Memorial Gifts made by individuals or chapters in the Members Only area of the Utah State website on the What s Happening page. Look along the right side of the page for the link. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - April 2014 Page 6 of 8
7 Keep Our Sisterhood Strong: April Tip By Nancy Williams, Y Utah State Organizer Tip #5. Consider our Objects and Aims often! Become an O&A Woman Every local chapter meeting begins the same way with members reciting the P.E.O. Objects and Aims. Have you heard the words as they are spoken? What do they mean to you? Karen Blair, 2004 president of California State Chapter, presented the following thoughts at Convention. The entire speech is published in the May/June 2005 P.E.O. Record. Any chapter can be strengthened when its members decide to become O&A women. Because O&A women are magnetic, they draw others to themselves just because they are so nice to be around. Women who are so very kind in words and deeds, who are interested in and knowledgeable about so many different things, who make it a priority in life to adhere to the values of Faith, Love, Purity, Justice and Truth call to our spirits. We all want to belong to an organization that nurtures those longings in us and in others. Women will find there is no area of life that won t be enhanced by living as an O&A woman. There is not a life that can t be made a little better for having spent time in the presence of that rarest of jewels an O&A woman. A woman that is P.E.O. Who can you bring to P.E.O. to be the next O&A woman? Remember membership growth is to our mission of advancing women as breathing is to living. It s up to each of us. What will you do? Did You Know? By Therese J. Milad, AJ; Carolyn Benson, AE and Sandy Berglund, D Utah State Finance Committee The Utah State Finance Committee is responsible for working with the State Board and preparing the annual budget. The Finance Committee reviews the income and expenses of the State Chapter and determines if there are enough funds to cover expenses. We work closely with Convention Facilities Coordinator Lisa Laird on costs of State Convention. We present the proposed budget at Convention, where it is voted upon by the delegates. We also assist the State Board in deciding how to use Convention funds. Watch for our Charts and Graphs Tutorial Session at 2014 Utah State Convention! Utah P.E.O.
