There is Mother s Day in May, Father s Day in June, Veteran s Day in November, with Grandparent s Day (September) and Pastor Appreciation Day (October), recent additions to the list. This month, of course, we have Valentine s Day on the 14th, a day when we let someone in our life know that that are loved and appreciated. Personally, I see the need for special days like these. Often, it seems, we let days, weeks or even months go by without letting people know that they are loved and valued by us. We assume that they know, but assuming is never a good strategy to live by, nor helpful in any relationship. So, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to come through on these special days, when a simple act of appreciation and love each day would go much further. At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus returned home to Nazareth and is asked to teach in his former synagogue. He unrolled the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and found the place where it is written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free And then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.. I used to think that prophecy was fulfilled simply by Jesus presence with them as the anointed one, the Messiah. Yet, in Greek, the scripture has been fulfilled isn t a once and done present, (or even past), tense. It is in the re-occurring perfect tense, which indicates an action that continues. Today is just the beginning, Jesus is saying, for good news to the poor, release to the captives, healing and freedom for those struggling. Each day of his ministry is characterized by good news, healings, freedom and hope. Indeed, when Jesus ascends to heaven, this becomes the way of his followers, including each of us, 2000 years later. We often use the time right before Christmas as a reminder to reach out to those who are alone and struggling. We share, we visit, we give as a sign of God s gifts to us. Yet, Jesus reminds us in his visit home, that there is a perfect day to say hello to someone alone, to reach out to someone hurting, to share a word of comfort and forgiveness, There is a perfect day to say I love you to someone special, or to say thank you to your parent or a veteran. 4 4 Zion is a licensed faith community with the Open Table ministry. What is Open Table? We continue exploring the fundamentals of this ministry...open Table is about Transition and Reconciliation. Transformation occurs when a community enters into a relationship with those in poverty, and as a result, grows beyond preconceived notions of the poor. As the community moves into mutual, direct relationships, reconciliation can truly occur, as old misconceptions give way to genuine fellowship and common goals. Experience outdoor ministries close to home with staff from Camp Mount Luther and volunteers from Zion Milah Josephina Calderon, daughter of Morgan Harmon and Jake Calderon became a member of Zion through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on Sunday, January 13th. Welcome to our family of faith! Class beginning February 1st! Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Classes at 1pm every Friday in the Youth Center Originally developed for self-defense, tai chi has evolved into a graceful form of exercise that's now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions. Often described as meditation in motion, tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. Tai chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. Come try out this new class or speak with instructor, Marianne Menapace, for more information. Stephen Ministry Corner Caring for Yourself- Sometimes you may forget that there is beautiful light in your soul, let s enlighten it by taking care of yourself! We recognize sometimes it s hard to ask for help when it seems like things are failing all around you. We have a resource at Zion for our congregational members and friends in the community- Stephen Ministry- yet not used as much as we anticipated. Please look at friends and family who may be going through a difficult time, offer a prayer and share there is help. Caring volunteers who want to help are ready to listen and be present just for them. Please contact Cindy Spang, Referral Coordinator or call the church office for more information. 9

Trust Fund and Investment income was $64, ($27,000 of which was from the Brown Trust). For Use of Building we received $10, Current Expense Disbursements for 2018 $288, Disbursements for Current Expenses included Benevolence for the work of the wider church in the amount of $32,500. Utilities costs were $24, Included in the Utilities are gas, electricity, telephone, water, sewer and internet. Building Maintenance costs were $12, Salary expenses were $148, Benefits were $19, Employer costs for Social Security were $11, Insurance for building /liability, flood and Workman's Compensation totaled $15, Van expenses for maintenance, insurance and gas were $ The five year Capital Campaign for repairing the organ and replacing the furnaces ended December 31, 2018 will all the funds repaid to the General Trust Fund. *The complete yearly Treasurer's Report is included in the 2018 Annual Report available in the Nave or outside the Church Office. Book Club Meets February 13th This month s selection: Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver Carol Rehrauer will be the discussion leader this month. Our upcoming meeting dates and selections are: March 13th, 2019 Luncheon at 12 noon. Location tba. We are reading Broken Girls by Simone St James. Audrey Brosius is the discussion leader. We meet at 1:30pm in the Parlor on April 10th, and have chosen the book Ellis Island by Kate Kerrigan. Cheryl Beeler will lead. We now have 17 active members who LOVE to read!
