Family & Resident Surveys PrimaCare Living Solutions wants to know How we re doing? Earlier this month a package was mailed to you with our Resident/Family Surveys. We want to make Burton Manor THE best home for you and your loved one so we ask that you kindly take a few minutes to participate in this very important survey that will help us reach our goal. Once you ve completed the survey, you may drop it off at Burton Manor or you could pick up a prepaid self addressed envelope at the Reception office at Burton Manor. The envelope is addressed to: RESIDENT SATISFACTION SURVEY, ATTN. Malaine Asiu, Executive Assistant, 200 Ronson Drive Suite 305, Toronto, ON, M9W 5Z9. Results from the survey will be posted at a later date. We thank you all. Residents Council News The Burton Manor Resident s Council will meet on Monday, November 19th at 10:30 a.m in the Celebration Room. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. I Remember Do you remember these words from the old 1941 classic by Johnny Mercer? It was written slightly before my time, but I seem to remember a pimple-faced teenager standing in front of a house on a busy Toronto street and singing it to the girl who had just broken my heart. How embarrassing! No wonder she dumped me! Continued on page 3. 2

I Remember Continued from page 2. I remember you; you're the one who made my dreams come true, a few kisses ago. I remember you; you're the one who said, I love you, too, I do, didn't you know? I remember too a distant bell, and stars that fell like rain out of the blue. When my life is through, and the angels ask me to recall the thrill of them all, then I will tell them I remember you! The words obviously didn t impress her, but all these years later I still do like that last line about the angels asking me to recall. But it s no longer the immature dreams of a boy. Now it s from the perspective of one, whose remaining years perhaps are fewer than he realizes. So, on that future day when I finally reach the end of my time on this earth, what are the things that I will recall? I am quite sure the answer will have nothing to do with things. I think it will be all about people, those special ones who gave me what I needed someone to love, a purpose for living, and, perhaps the greatest gift of all, a future to look forward to. However for most of us not all recollections are happy. Some of you will remember a father who didn t come home from the war. Some will remember a child who was taken from you before it ever had the chance to really live. Still others, perhaps most, will remember a partner whose passing left a jagged hole that no amount of time could ever mend. During this season of remembrance, a letter written a long time ago and preserved in the pages of Scripture, says in a few words what you need to embrace for yourself. I thank my God every time I remember you. Remembrance of your lost love, and thanksgiving for the One who has promised you that He will one day, in another place, bring you together again, that is a gift that no money can buy. It s a promise that is not for sale. You only need to believe what God has said and trust Him to fulfill it. He will, because His name is Love. Chaplain Bryan Fox 3

Movember It s that time of year again! Adam and Binu will be growing their stash in support of Movember! During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their Mo s, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. ( If you would like to sponsor our Mo s please do the following: To sponsor Adam go to: Search Burlington Hockey Dads and click Donate to team To sponsor Binu go to: and click on General Donation Why the Poppy The association between the poppy and war dates back to the Napoleonic wars, when a writer saw a field of poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers. During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae was inspired to write the poem In Flanders Fields on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle. ( Appreciation Burton Manor had the pleasure of having Scott McLeod, CEO of the Central West Local Health Integration Network come by for a visit and here is what he had to say: It was my pleasure and I was soooo impressed with your team and the quality care Burton provides! And truly appreciated you and your teams insights and will definitely be following up. - Scott McLeod 4

Family Council News Next Meeting will be: Thursday, November 22nd, at 6:30pm in the Celebration Room Guests will be: The Burton Manor Leadership Team for a meet and greet!! Elections will be held for the family council positions Message from Primacare. October has been a very exciting month with the inaugural year of our Aiming High Together Quality Award winners being announced on October 19, in the Homes. Our judging panel consisted of the owners, Matthew Melchior and Randy Melchior, and long term care experts, Susan Norton and Jane Boudreau-Bailey. I am indebted to our panel and long term care experts for the knowledge and skill they brought to the deliberations. Of particular note is that these awards are peer, resident/family nominated. The quality of the nominations and the deep sentiment they conveyed were very powerful. It was extremely challenging to come to a decision given the strength of the nominations we reviewed. It is very clear that many staff show a deep commitment and dedication to our residents, families, coworkers and community. If there is a heart, it is definitely in the communities of Burton Manor and Henley House. With great fanfare, Randy Melchior, owner and Board Chair and myself caught the award recipients in the act in our Homes. These were very special moments when the flowers and balloons appeared along with personal congratulations from Randy Melchior. Each award winner received a certificate of appreciation, a cheque for $250 and an invitation to the Aiming High Together Quality Awards luncheon on November 2, hosted by Matthew Melchior. The Aiming High Together Quality Award winners are: Leadership Excellence Lauren Disch, Life Enrichment Manager, Burton Manor Community Outreach Heather Weir, Laundry Aide, Henley House Making A Difference Recreation Team, Henley House Workplace Culture Maria Vieira, Housekeeper, Burton Manor People Focused Service Amanda Pereira, RPN, Henley House Quality Care Carmen Pedro Peters, PSW, Burton Manor 6

Please take a moment to view our winners on the Aiming High Together Wall of Fame located in the lobbies of the Homes. I would like to thank all of those who took the time to complete a nomination form and provide the required supporting documentation. I would also like to acknowledge all those staff members who were nominated. Each and every one of you deserves to be recognized for the impact you have on others each day. It is an honour to be in your company as we Aim High Together everyday to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. Congratulations to all! Best regards, Jill Knowlton Managing Director Left to Right: Jill Knowlton Managing Director, Maria Vieira Housekeeper & Randy Melchior Owner.
