It s been a long time since the Utes last suffered through a losing season. Not since 1990, head coach Ron McBride s first year, has Utah finished below.500. That team also finished The 2000 Utes were the preseason pick to defend the Mountain West Conference title they shared in Despite the disappointing season, McBride picked up career win No. 75 on November 11 against Wyoming. RECAPPING THE SEASON FINALE Utah made an amazing fourth quarter comeback in its game against Brigham Young on November 24 in Salt Lake City, only to lose in equally stunning fashion, The Utes led just once prior to the fourth quarter, scoring in the first minute of play when cornerback Andre Dyson returned an interception for a touchdown. The Cougars scored the next 26 points and led entering the final stanza. Sparked by senior quarterback Darnell Arceneaux, who replaced freshman Lance Rice at the helm, Utah roared back with 17 fourth quarter points. Included among those were Ryan Kaneshiro s second field goal of the day and the extra point that put Utah up with just 2:16 remaining. But Utah s defense, solid all year long, couldn t hold BYU on fourth and 13 and the Cougars went on to score the winning touchdown and tack on a two-point conversion. 11 2000 UTAH GAME BY GAME GAME 1 SEPT. 2 ARIZONA 17, UTAH 3 SALT LAKE CITY RICE-ECCLES STADIUM [41,352] SALT LAKE CITY Utah won on paper, but lost on the field (17-3) to Arizona before a crowd of 41,352 in Rice-Eccles Stadium in its season opener last Saturday. The Utes racked up 370 yards of total offense to Arizona s 146 yards, had 12 more first downs, did not give up a single third down conversion (Arizona was 0-12 on third down) and held the ball for nine more minutes on offense. However, five turnovers, including a lost fumble that was scooped up and run into the end zone by a UA defender, negated the statistical edge. Senior quarterback T.D. Croshaw started the game and played slightly more than a half, before he was replaced by fellow senior Darnell Arceneaux. The two combined for 310 passing yards. Utah managed just 60 yards on the ground. Junior receiver Cliff Russell was Utah s lone offensive highlight, making 10 receptions for 141 yards to lead the offense. The defense kept the Wildcats in check, holding them to 11 passing yards. The only UA touchdown scored against the defense came after another Ute fumble put Arizona on the Utah 20 yard line. True freshman Jason Kaufusi, in his first collegiate game, led Utah with eight tackles. Senior linebacker Kautai Olevao had two tackles for loss and a sack. MEMORIAL STADIUM [43,500] BERKELEY, Calif A rousing fourth-quarter comeback fell short last Saturday, with Utah succumbing to California in Berkeley. The offense didn t click through three quarters and Utah fell behind 21-7, with its only touchdown courtesy of a defensive interception. A 14-point fourth quarter rally helped Utah finish with 297 total yards, most under the direction of quarterback Darnell Arceneaux, who replaced starter T.D. Croshaw at the start of the second quarter. The Utes had two touchdowns called back: one on a pass play to Steve Smith that was waved off after being signaled a touchdown by one official, and one on an 85-yard punt return by Smith that was negated by a clip. Andre Dyson scored Utah s first TD on a game-tying 58-yard interception return in the second quarter. Running back Nick Morgan scored Utah s first offensive TD of the season in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard run. Utah s final score came on another Smith punt return to the end zone, this one a 46-yard return.
