As Little Sir Charles Luke indicated, we have definitely had our share of rain - I too hope that our Members have not had much damage It is great to see Reservoirs filling up!!! I had the opportunity to participate in the Tech Group Meeting put on by Dick Chimenti on January 25 th. I attended this meeting some time ago, and was not disappointed then, nor was I this time There were roughly 20 people who showed up. Dick was kind enough to solicit questions in advance of the meeting, and then discussed them with all of us My personal thanks to Dick for taking the time to continue to hold these very informative sessions! The SRT Season will be soon be here Details to follow shortly I am working with the BEC in starting early planning for our two main events of the year, which are the August Picnic, and the Christmas Dinner If we are fiscally able to, I would like to have the Picnic at the Indigeny Reserve once more, utilizing Sierra Smoke BBQ as the Caterer More information on these events will be forthcoming soon. Little SIR Blog I hope everyone enjoyed our January speaker, Dr. Personius, who provided us with some valuable information. I think all of our members learned something they could take home with them. January has certainly ushered in some severe storms in the Sierra Foothills. I hope there has been no significant storm damage among our membership. On a positive note, the Sierra snowpack is almost double the January average, and many reservoirs are now running above average. Later in the year, a speaker from TUD will give us an update and discuss the impact of the recent rainfall on the drought in California. Board Members, Group Chairmen and all members are invited Lunch Speakers On February 2, Sara Jones, one of the Sierra Repertory Theatre founders, will discuss the history of SRT and the company s plans for future seasons. Our Thursday, March 2 nd lunch speaker is Laura Krieg, District Attorney for Tuolumne County. She will provide an update and discussion on the crime trends in Tuolumne County. 3 ACTIVITY GROUP NEWS Bike (Steve Happel, ) Rides are planned for the second Tuesday each month Unless the weather prohibits, our Bike Group s next ride will take place on Tuesday, February 14 th. It s the one that was planned for January to Copperopolis Town Square riding down Little John Road to Saddle Creen then around the development. Lunch afterwards at a place TBD. We ll meet at Kohls at 8:30am then carpool to Copperopolis. Golf (Richard Broddie, ) Stay tuned for this year s schedule Hike (Fred Petersen, ) SIR Twain Harte Hikes are on the third Tuesday each month and planning is underway for the first hike in April - no February or March hikes. Spring destinations could be trails in the vicinity of Red Hills, New Melones, Westside Railroad, Pinecrest, or other lower elevation trails. Any suggestions are welcome. I have limited knowledge of other lower mountain hiking trails close by. I will be looking for new destinations during my planning in the next few months. I hope to keep hiking distances in the 4 to 5 mile range and stay on not-too-steep trails. Summer and fall destinations will include higher elevation trails. Horseshoes (Cas Munoz, ) Get ready for Spring practice. Cas will soon advise everyone of this years schedule. Kayak (Dave Kenney, ) Dave will be developing some adventures with Pinecrest Lake being a favorite destination. Don t have a kayak? A few of us have extra room in our kayaks and if you would like to take a kayak rice, let me know in advance. Kayaks can be rented at the Pinecrest marina and anyone thinking about kayaks should come along to see all that happens There are Sit-In, Sit-on-Top and 3 different inflatable types, each with distinct advantages. Life jackets are required to be present for each person. We try to be ready to launch at 8:00am and are usually done by around 11 A.M. The reason for the early start is to avoid the late morning breeze. Lunch after by group consensus is always an option. Meeting place: Turn right at the Pinecrest lake parking area, we meet near the end. We may also use commercial rafts and do the Knight s Ferry river run. This may be coordinated with the Sir s Hiking group, who sponsored the Knight s Ferry river run last year. Other places like New Melonies are also under consideration.
