The article relates the heroics of The Doolittle Raiders. Their bravery gave inspiration to a beleaguered United States. It is appropriate then that with Memorial Day just last month and Veterans Day coming up, that we honor these men for their sacrifices and loyalty to the United States of America. ---Editor THE LAST TOAST Soon, the remaining members of the Doolittle Raiders will reunite for a final reunion. In 1942, this squad of 80 men bombed Tokyo in a death-defying mission in retaliation for the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The four surviving Doolittle Raiders will gather in Fort Walton Beach, Fl for the last time to toast their fallen comrades with aged Brandy none want to drink. In April, 1942, these B0 men carried out one of the most courageous and heart stirring military operations in this Nation's history Ȧfter Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, with the United States reeling, something dramatic was needed to turn the war effort around. With no friendly airfields close enough to help, they planned for the sixteen heavily-laden B-25s take off from an aircraft carrier, something that had never been tried before. These sixteen, 5-man crews, led by LTC James Doolittle, were to take off from the USS Hornet and return to friendly airfields in China. Before take-off, the crews were informed that Japan had found out about the plan and therefore, the Hornet had to be further out in the ocean for safety reasons. So, the crews knew they could not return to safety and all of them took off an5rvuay. The planes and crews bombed Tokyo and flew as far as possible with their remaining fuel. Four airplanes crash-landed; 11 more crews bailed out and three of the Raiders died. Eight more were captured and three were executed. Another died of starvation in a prison camp and one crew made it to Russia. The Doolittle Raid sent a message to the World: We will fight and, no matter what it takes, we will win! Of the original 80 Raiders, 62 survived the war. They were National Heroes and models of bravery. The movie "Thirty Seconds over Tolgro" was made about their exploits. In 1946, the Raider's began annual reunions in different American cities. In 1959, as a gesture of respect and gratitude, Tucson, Arizona presented the Raiders with a set of 80 silver goblets, each engraved with the name of one of the Raiders.
2 This case is transported to the reunion city. When a Raider passes away, his goblet is turned upside down in the case. Also in the case is a bottle of 1896 Hennessy Very Special Brandy. Jimmy Doolittle was born in The plan had always been that when only two of the Raiders remain, they would open the cognac, have one last drink from it and toast their comrades who had preceded them in death. At the beginning of 2013, there were five living Raiders. In February, one of them, Tom Griffith passed away at age 96. The four surviving Raiders are Dick Cole, who served as Doolittle's co-pilot on the Tolryo raid, Robert Hite, Edward Saylor and David Thatcher, all in their 90s. These four decided that there were so few of them now, that 2013 would be the last public reunion for the Raiders, marking the end of the saga, having come full circle. These four remaining Raiders have decided to meet privately later this year, fiil the four remaining upright goblets with the Hennessey and raise them in a toast to those who are gone. Do these men ever wonder if their sacrifices so long ago to help save our Country are appreciated by those who were not there? Let all our transactions in life DEMONSTRATE BY EXAMPLE what u/e as Freemasons aspire to in our daily lives. Many of our Brothers have fought to make the world and our country better and it is just one of the aspects of this cause to put themselvcs at the forefront of armed conflicts. We should be proud of them and not hesitate to join alongside any modem one who follows this path. Here in America, we see Brothers who were actively a part of the Civil War, American War of Independence, various battles along the frontier and many conflicts outside our borders. To show a list of all who can be included in this would take many, many pages and wouid include a number of my readers. Those of you who are still among the living could then add more which they knew or still know. Patriotism is a theme often skipped over in our quest for enlightenment. Sometimes, we work so much on achieving the great cause of peace and harmony for all, that we neglect to realize that sometimes stepping up and actively fighting for what is right for us or others, is a part of this irnportant cause. One of the first charges we are taught as Masons include a phrase that tells us to be good, peaceable and loyal citizens of the country for which we are living in and that includes many things. One part is to protect it. To be free is a tough concept to define, but in its basic form, it allows the mind and heart to go where it is lead. To be confined and oppressed or kept under the heel of power hungry individuals is contrary to the Creator's original intent. When done right, it answers the question: "Should we be allowed to enjoy the ficedorns which we love and given to us directly by God, when others are not yet able to do the same?" Being patriotic is not mentioned in our list of viftues, for it can mean a lot of things to different people. But, I am very glad to see it put forth at all Blue Lodge meetings with the pledge to the flag. We take for granted that the freedoms we now have, had to be fought for, all through the ages My country may not be perfect, but I am proud to have been born in it and live here. The United States is a unique country, different than others, where we have a system of goveming that is based on ancient themes and in which many of its originators that held Masonic ideals. What a blended society we are! Being patriotic is something we need to pass on to all generations that follow us. Our Brother Albert Pike says that patriotism can be a powerful force. I will let him say lnore on this topic: "Above all, the Love of Country, State Pride, the Love of Home, are forces of great power. Encourage them all. Insist upon them in your public men. Permanency of home is necessary to patriotism. A migratory race will have little love of country."
4 From the Secretary' s Desk By Bill Klatil,33*, Secretary At the May stated meeting, the members present were treated to an inspiring presentation of the Order of DeMolay's "Flower Talk". This ceremony was delivered by the Deputy State Master Councilor of DeMolay, Tim Zumalt. Tim is also the 2013 Frank Marshall Tournament of Champions first place award winner. Tim's supporling cast was his brother, his mother Chris and his father Tom, who is a Scottish Rite Mason in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The dry eyes were hard to come by after this moving performance given by these young men. Illustrious and Most Worshipful Brother Claud Dutro was presented with a plaque by the SGIG and his Personal Representative for his years of service in the Secretary's position. A well-deserved standing ovation and the Grand Honors of Masonry were afforded Claud after the plaque presentation. The 2013 Spring Reunion has come and gone but it is always nice to reacquaint old friendships and catch up with the livcs and stories of our Brothers. One of the many Brothers who has been missed is Illustrious Brother Jack Denton, who was in attendance after a brief hiatus. The Denver Consistory held its first event coinciding with the "Celebrate the Craft" web-athon on Siturday, May 18tl'in the classroom. We had a small, but enthusiastic turnout where $4000 was pledged by our SGIG to support the effort. Have you considered a tax deductible donation to the House of the Temple in Washington, DC? Plan on attending the stated meeting on June 17tl' in your best and brightest Hawaiian shirt. (No shorts or flip-flops.) A very casual evening is planned with Barbequed Salmon and strawberry shortcake for dinner. The new Double Eagle points awards will be passed out to several of our Brothers along with individual eagles for the original jewels. Other awards will also be presented to 25 year members and Master Craftsman scholars. WHAT IS THE DEGREE COUNCIL? By Ron Birely, 33* Director General for Denver Consistory Talking about the Degree Council is not an easy task because the Council has so many facets, personalities and responsibilities. I could list the titles of the membership, but that really does not tell the story of the Degree Council. In my experience with the Council, I would say that it is a group of Scottish Rite Masons comprised of Degree Directors, Assistant Directors and Committee Chairs who create and produce some of the most spectacular and meaningful Masonic work anywhere on this planet. These are men who love the Degrees. Members of the Degree Council want the lessons in the Degrees to come to life. To do this, the Council has set certain objectives for themselves. The Degree Council has set five stated objectives: l. The Degree work presented must provide a meaningful, significant and emotional event for the new Scottish Rite Mason. 2. We must be continuously improving the quality of the Degree work. All support Committees are critical in this effort. 3. Involve every Scottish Rite Mason in the Denver Valley that wants to work during the Reunion in Degrees or Committee support. 4. Present the Degrees with feeling and passion. 5. The Directors expect the cast members in the Degrees to know their parts and deliver them with confidence and passion for the lesson being presented. These are not easy objectives. But, the Council holds themselves to these standards and our progress toward meeting these objectives are reviewed after each Reunion. At the same time, while this sounds like all work and no play, the Council strives to meet all of these objectives in a spirit of fun and fellowship. Among the many duties of the Degree Council, it is also their responsibility to set the tone for the Reunion. lt is our expectation at the Denver Consistory that Reunions are to be inviting to all who wish to attend.

STATED MEETINGS: Parking after spm is allowed in any open space in the basement, Znd or 3.d floors, providing the space does not have a "reserved" sign. Parking is not allowed on the 1't floor 4S-minute spaces or in any space in the basement,znd and 3.d floors that has a "reserved" sign or in a double length space. Unauthorized cars parked in those spaces may be towed at the owner's expense. In the event there are no unreserved spaces available, you may park in the Iot iust to the east of the Consistory building after spm. Access to that lot is on Logan Street iust north of 13th Avenue. SPECIAL EVENTS: Scheduled and announced in advance are similar to stated meetings in that no parking is allowed in a "reserved" space or double length space. ALL OTHER TIMES: Parking is authorized only in the spaces on the 2"d floor that are designated as being reserved for Denver Consistory and only for the specified individuals, unless authorized in advance by the specified individual or the Denver Consistory office. 7 lately about how the points system is being used to -There determine recognition levels for the volunteer hours WHY ARE WE RBALLY HERE? By John Warren,32*, KCCH has been a lot of talk around the Consistory our Brothers donate to Denver Consistory. In April's Rite Works, a list was published detailing how many points are awarded for the many activities around the Consistory. To most, the list seems clear. For some, it is not so clear. No doubt, when the list was created, it was done so that all Brothers would know that points awarded for their activities would be on the level with their Brethren. If you are the first line signer on a new Brothers petition, you get 150 points and so on. I do not know who said it, Orwell perhaps, but the gist of the comment was "that some pigs are more equal than other pigs." THAT, my Brothers, is creating problerns. I think we can all agree that an "ATTABOY" once in a while is welcome for whatever we have done to deserve it. I also believe that the vast majority of Brothers do not volunteer their time at the Consistory JUST for the rewards and recognition. Leo Tolstoy said: "The vocation of cvery man and woman is to serve other people." Some seem to forget this at times. We all took the same oaths and incur:red the same obligations when we became a Mason. We are taught in our Blue Lodge that Masonry does not regard a man for his worldly worth and honors, also afactthat some seem to have forgotten. This dissatisfaction with the point system has been brewing for some time now, with some believing they deserve more points because they do more. Huh???????????????? A Brother recently told me about his negative experience with the point system. This Brother, who is a Life Member of the Consistory, said that just a few years ago, he had accumulated a large number of points but was later told that no record of his points could be found and thus, no recognition. As a result of this snafu, he seldom participates in Consistory activities. He must have seen the storm clouds in my eyes because he quickly told me that this was before the current office staff was on board. An extreme case? Sure, but another example of the growing dissatisfaction. There was a television show a t.ew years ago called "Whose Line Is It Anyway" hosted by Drew Carey. In his opening remarks, Mr. Carey talked about points being awarded to the actors and went on to say that "the points don't matter just like they don't matter for...." whatever. I would comment here that if the ONLY reason you volunteer is for the points and recognition, then the points really don't matter, do they? If they are used to recognize a Brother's achievements, then, yes, they do. I would say here that if any Brother has a problem with the system, then talk to one of THEM, whoever THEM are, and have your concerns expressed. I have often commented that it is very difficult for a Brother to be perfect in everything and that if you do excel in a ceftain area, then concentrate a little more there and still parlicipate elsewhere. Doing this certainly makes life seem a bit more fulfilling for me. The motto from my high school senior class was "Whatever is worth doing, is worth doing well!" I sometimes wonder how words from so long ago could be so relevant today. Most of us are here doing what we do out of love for the Fraternity. At the same time, we should remember that no one Brother is indispensible. There is no single solution here, but I would suggest that the tirades against the system be toned down a bit and start working towards a solution, knowing how difficult this will be. Of course, I have two whimsical solutions to this. I ) Do nothing. 2) Reinvent the point chart to include EVERY possibility for earning points. This would run the gamut from Committee Chairmen working at home to helping out at other Consistory's when asked, to actors studying degree scripts at home to sweeping the floors and on and on and on. All that sounds pretty ridiculous and extreme, doesn't it? But, I think you get my point. Remember always from whence you came! An unknown author once said that "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." And so it is!
