Most would say Seeking More Light refers to Gaining Knowledge, Truth, and Education regarding Scottish Rite and Blue Lodge membership. Scottish Rite as The University of Freemasonry on page 4 offers some insight into the many ways the Scottish Rite Mason may further his education. More information about these opportunities is available on our website. Look for Seeking the Light at Computers not your thing? No Worries! Contact Sonny Tull, General Secretary, at the office. 3 THE DEGREES PER CLAUSEN S COMMENTARIES PERFECT MASTER, THE FIFTH DEGREE: Industry and honesty are homely virtues that become a Perfect Master. Life is far too short and fleeting to waste time in idleness, follies or dissipation. To learn and to do combine and develop the potential human soul with inherent force and power. Satan finds mischief for idle hands. Honesty still is the best policy and an honest man still is the noblest work of God. This virtue should be reflected in contracts, business dealings, payment for services and acceptance of an honest day's pay only for an honest day's work. So live and deal and act that when you go before God no man was poorer because you were richer; no man had less rank, influence, reputation or affection because you had more. INTIMATE SECRETARY, THE SIXTH DEGREE: In this Degree we learn to reject the worldly, the covetous and the sensual, the severe, the censorious and the injurious in favor of duty, charity and toleration. In our personal lives we should practice those virtues and the Golden Rule, with peace and loving kindness toward our parents, children, friends, neighbors, employees and business associates, not for popular acclaim but for our own inner satisfaction. Organizations should reflect harmony as the strength and support of all societies, especially of ours. Ideally, we thus should witness the elimination of dissensions, disputes and quarrels and a world without war. Thoughts should be focused upon that which is good and healthy. In short, we are told how we can reshape our thinking into joyful channels of charity, self-control and success. PROVOST AND JUDGE, THE SEVENTH DEGREE: From this Degree we learn that impartial justice protects persons, property, happiness and reputation. It involves punishment and the possibility also of retribution and repentance for wrong done and evil perpetrated. Every criminal, every teller of idle words, and every doer of evil deeds stands revealed in his naked guilt before God. There is divine as well as man-made justice. What has been done or omitted never can be obliterated. It is a momentous truth that wrong and injustice once done or omitted cannot be undone. The consequences are eternal. Wrong contains its own retributive penalty. Reparation or remorse may result in forgiveness, but the deed or omission is never erased. Masonry endeavors to restrain men from injustice, wrong and outrage, and when this restraint fails, seeks for the fallen the type of justice that is tempered with mercy and pity. We should not look with scorn upon the disgraced offender; rather, there should be concern as to how he may be reclaimed. Remember that you, too, someday may appear before the bar of justice if you have not already done so; or perhaps you have escaped apprehension! Those invested with the power of judging, whether as judge or jury, should act patiently, uprightly and impartially, devoid of prejudice, preconception and personal considerations, and carefully weigh the facts and arguments before proceeding to decision. Our great goal is finding the most effectual means of preventing and dealing with wrong and injustice, and of enforcing the laws of God and man. Page 3
4 P A G E 4 Scottish Rite: The University of Freemasonry Scottish Rite has been described as The University of Freemasonry because it offers multiple opportunities for members to expand their Masonic knowledge. Many of these are introduced below. If you are interested in obtaining more information about any of the programs available through the Scottish Rite, see our website or contact the Scottish Rite office. If you are interested in joining or obtaining information regarding the Texas Lodge of Research, which is under the auspice of the Grand Lodge of Texas, please contact your local lodge secretary or the Grand Lodge of Texas for information. There is always opportunity for Masonic scholars among us to present their first hand research to our local brethren for potential addition to the lecture series, or as a topic for a study group. If you are working on any type of Masonic research and seeking direction, advice, or nearing readiness for presentation, contact the Education Committee by way of the Scottish Rite Office. If you wish to offer presentations, Fort Worth Scottish Rite will facilitate for you. Degree Work Degree work is the first method of Masonic education. Each and every time a degree is experienced, the Mason gains new insights and truths. Educational Programs and Study Groups Fort Worth Scottish Rite presents lectures series and sponsors Study Groups. Topics range from Masonic history to different points of Masonic symbolism in the Blue Lodge degrees. These offerings are presented and moderated by Masons with expertise in the subject area. Education Programs are presented multiple times during the year, both in Fort Worth and other locations within the Valley. Study groups gather in Fort Worth once a month, in the months between Education Programs. Supreme Council Library Access Scottish Rite members have access to the Supreme Council Library and its collection of rare books and manuscripts. The House of the Temple s library is the oldest library in DC that is open to the public and houses over 250,000 precious books, manuscripts, and other publications. Two of its rarest volumes include Benjamin Franklin s 1734 re-printing of Rev. James Anderson s The Constitutions of the Free-Masons and an Incunabulum titled, Sermones de tempore et de sanctis, by Albertus Magnus, printed in Ulm, Germany in Master Craftsman Program The Master Craftsman Program is a series of self-study courses using materials provided by the Supreme Council through the Valley Offices. The courses begin with the more basic and advance as the student goes on. They are not required, but do provide each member an opportunity to learn the lessons of the degrees and other points of interest by the use of information found in well-researched and regularly revised materials. College of Consistory The emphasis of the College of the Consistory is individual self-study. The course is an at-home curriculum, which offers the opportunity to study the major ideas and themes outlined in the degrees of the Rite at your leisure. You progress in the College at your own pace. The College of the Consistory was established to provide a venue whereby Scottish Rite Masons can better use the teachings of the Scottish Rite as a lifelong learning and living tool. Scottish Rite Research Society and Texas Lodge of Research Members of the Scottish Rite Research Society take on independent research studies that are presented at an annual meeting and published in an annual publication, similar to the Texas Lodge of Research, but not affiliated with it in any way. The Scottish Rite Research Society serves under the auspices of the Supreme Council 33 Southern Jurisdiction.; the Texas Lodge of Research under the auspices of the Grand Lodge of Texas. Page 4
5 What Do I Get Out of Masonry? P A G E 5 Originally published in 1972, each of these still resonate today... I get the fellowship with men who I can respect and trust, men who believe in the practice of the Golden Rule of Life. I get inspiration to greater effort to attain to the highest levels of relationship to my Brother Man, and my responsibility to him. I get better understanding of my dependence upon the obligation to the Infinite, and Peace of Mind and Soul in obedience to His Commands. I get opportunity to extend to my Brother a helping hand til he too see the Light and can teach others to build temples for the indwelling of the Most High. That s what I get out of Masonry, get it by putting into Masonry the best there is in me to service my Brother Mason and the Brothers who have not yet knocked at the portals of Masonry. -- Scottish Rite News, Scottish Rite Herald, Vol. LXIII, No.5, September, 1972 Want to share what you get out of Masonry? 6 A Brother Shining Bright We at Fort Worth Scottish Rite know and appreciate Michael (Mike) Coté, 32 KCCH as both a Brother and member of several committees. Mike Coté, 32ᵒ KCCH Mike is active in several Blue Lodges, and in the York Rite where he is a Past High Priest and Thrice Illustrious Master at Granbury Chapter and Council. Michael served as Worshipful Master of Hannibal Lodge 564 in the Masonic year, and was recently appointed Grand Musician of the Grand Lodge of Texas for He was born on October 3, 1970 in Orlando, Florida, where his father was stationed with the United States Air Force. The family moved to Texas in 1974 when his father was reassigned to duty in Fort Worth at what was then Carswell Air Force Base (now the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base). Being a member of a military family, Mike s education was well rounded. By his father's subsequent station reassignments, he was exposed to the cultures of many different countries. He attended college at University of Texas at Arlington. While his dad was stationed overseas, Mike developed his abilities playing guitar and other instruments. His musical specialty has become Traditional Country, Western, and Western Swing. He enjoys Jazz and Folk genres as well, but seldom plays them professionally because there is more of a demand for the Country genre in Texas. Brother Coté has also worked in retail sales and dry-cleaning, but as he did not enjoy the work, both his interest in music and older brother's encouragement to pursue a career in music took hold. As his music career began to establish itself he and his wife, Crystal, also started a design graphics and sportswear embroidering business which has produced fine quality work since Mike explains that he loves the music part of his wage-earning career because it brings him pure enjoyment, and the design and embroidery part because it allows him to spend more time with his wife and family, to interact and develop the precious bonds of family. His Masonic career began in the early 2000s, when he became a member of Olive Branch Masonic Lodge located in Brock, Texas. Crystal is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and his son, Michael, is active in the Order of DeMolay. Mike says he always had an interest in Freemasonry, mainly due to the influence of his older brother and several family friends who introduced him to what Masonry was about and seeing the good it established in their lives. In his own words, Masonry provides an equal balance of enjoyment and hard work; it challenges all of us to develop great friendships and establish good moral ethics that last a lifetime. 7 Eternal Knights of the Rose Croix Once again death hath summoned a member of our Fraternity, and the golden gateway to the Eternal City has opened with a welcome to home. The work of ministering to the wants of the afflicted, in shedding light into darkened souls and in bringing joy into the places of misery is completed, and as a reward has received the plaudit, well done from the Supreme Master. Holy Sonnets: Death, be not proud by John Donne Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so; For those whom thou think st thou dost overthrow Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me. From rest and sleep, which but they pictures be, Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow, And soonest our best men with thee do go, Rest of their bones and soul s delivery. Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell, And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better than thy stroke; why swell st thou then? One short sleep past, we wake eternally And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die. Our Departed Brothers John R. Ashcraft, 32ᵒ, March 28, 2016 Wendell M.
