The Guatemala Stove Team installed a stove and a water filter for each of the 60 Mayan families while also giving each family 2 bibles. At a school, they installed a conventional stove and 8 water filters, and handed out 80 bibles. The Team paid for a meal for a group of elderly homeless and served it to them. They also installed a stove in the home of the family who cooks the meal for them once a week. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this possible. Empowering the Church to Walk alongside Refugees with the Love of Christ Wed. April 11, 6-8pm Love of Christ Lutheran Church Every year refugees from all over the world arrive in MN. Through Refugee Life Ministries (RLM), church teams and New Neighbors have the privilege of welcoming and walking alongside newly arrived families as they adjust to life here, while finding new beginnings, hope, and new friends. Teams from churches and individual New Neighbors are equipped to love their refugee friends holistically as they build genuine friendships, learn from each other, assist with practical needs, and share the good news of Jesus through their lives. Not only do churches become part of God s transformative work in their refugee friends, but they too are changed. We believe that through this process life transformation is possible for both refugees and the church. Register at: sgrimsley@arriveministries.org

11 Coffeepot Counselor. c by Dick Mowe Can You Hear Me Now? My wife, Bev, and I once got into an argument that lasted off and on for about three days. Eventually I had to change my thinking and admit that she was trying to tell me something that I was just not getting. I was reminded that listening takes work. It may be required at an inconvenient time, reveal a difficult truth that demands a change in thinking or behavior, but results in blessing. Even though I learned a good lesson, I have been made painfully aware that I need constant refresher courses in listening! The Bible tells the story about Samuel learning to listen to God. Samuel was a judge and prophet who served between the time of judges and kings. He was raised as a boy by the priest Eli in the tabernacle. One night Samuel was lying down when he heard a voice. Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, Here I am. And he ran to Eli and said, Here I am; you called me. But Eli said, I did not call; go back and lie down. So he went and lay down. (1 Sam 3:4-5, NIV) God called Samuel two more times and Samuel ran to Eli each time. At this time, Samuel did not know God or recognize His voice. Finally, Eli figured out whose voice Samuel was hearing. Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, Samuel! Samuel! Then Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. (1 Sam 8b-10, NIV) Then God told Samuel that he would carry out everything he had earlier promised concerning Eli and his family. (Eli and his family would either die early or live miserable lives.) Of course, Eli wanted to know what God had said and Samuel repeated the alarming message. God was with Samuel as he grew and eventually Samuel was recognized by all Israel as a prophet of God. Samuel learned that listening takes work. It may be required at an inconvenient time, reveal a difficult truth that demands a change in thinking or behavior, but results in blessing. God does not usually speak to us as dramatically as He did to Samuel. However, He communicates to us through His Holy Spirit. Some of the ways he speaks are through scripture, other people, silence, nature, and prayer. The first step in listening to God is realizing that He speaks. I m still working on it.

13 What is "Empty Bowls?" Empty Bowls is an internationally recognized program designed to draw attention to the problem of hunger in the United States and the World. In 1990, a high school art teacher in Michigan helped his students solve a problem. They were searching for a creative way to raise funds to support a food drive. What evolved was a class project to make ceramic bowls for a fundraising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup and bread, and were invited to keep their bowls as a reminder of hunger in the world.
14 Small things with great love Throughout these months, grad students have come to the table to share coffee and the peculiarities of life as a student. Our weekly "Grad Coffee Club" in the library cafe on campus is a touchstone for many to see familiar faces, re-fuel for class, and reach out for prayer and support: Kate is a first-year student pursuing a master's in education and as we talked I learned that her assignment to interview a grade-school administrator. As a newcomer to St. Cloud, it was challenging to make connections and complete the assignment. I offered to introduce her to my children's principal later that week. The next week at Club, she beamed with joy and reported that the meeting was an encouragement and blessing to her, and the principal offered her an opportunity to job shadow over the coming weeks! Small chats over coffee, ordinary offers, extending Christ's hospitality effect blessings in others every day. Would you for pray me to have more of these encounters as I invite students & faculty to coffee, to our home for dinner, out for cultural events, and even inviting student & scholar families to join us for kids' workshop at Home Depot (photo). The best spiritual conversations come while sharing life on campus and in community! Double the love with great changes. This year has been full of ministry with graduate students, visiting scholars and their families: coffee club, road trips, symposia, bible study, mentoring, physically moving, and hosting... and I realize that I miss also working with faculty as I have in past years. The reality is that I cannot do both with only 10 hours each week. In April & May I will be stepping back from campus work, to raise funds that will double my capacity to minister, coach, and disciple students AND faculty on campus this fall. THANK YOU for your prayers over me and these students, for your participation in small things with great love, and your partnership of resources! --Kirsten Wagenius Intervarsity, Campus Ministry, is one of the missions in which Hope Covenant supports.
