Ray I m grateful for a safe place for me and also for Lee different places but safe. Aina B For health and being in a place where I don t have to scrub, clean, wash, or cook. I can relax and do whatever I please! Pat J I m thankful that I don t get as much mail as Aina P.!!! Florence I m thankful I m here in a nice, safe place, and I don t have to cook what I eat! Carol S I m thankful for a life me of being blessed by God, and also for faithful Jack! Arlene I m thankful for so many different experiences in my life and having lived it! Bob I m grateful to be in Oregon with so much to do. Lois I m grateful for all these fellow residents. CHRISTMAS DÉCOR Before you run out and buy a live Christmas tree or wreath... don t! Fire safety restricts us from having any live boughs or trees inside our building. However, you can be as crea ve as you wish with man made fibers and décor that will cheer our place and provide residents enjoyable scenery as they walk about the building. We some mes have a door decora ng compe on with several categories in which to win so keep this in mind: Most Crea ve, Most Colorful, Most Real Meaning of Christmas, Most Sparkly, Most Santa Themed, or how about the Most Peaceful? Hearthstone of Beaverton is proud to join forces with KGW to collect unwrapped, new toys for the children in our community who are less fortunate. Toys may be dropped off at the front desk un l Dec. 13. At that me, we will be joining a caravan of other senior housing community buses and dropping the toys off at the KGW studios. 2

3 Have you ever had Stone Soup? Sound tasty? A er WWII, Mildred and her husband and their friends had Stone Soup almost every week and it provided sustenance, nourishment, and much needed fellowship a er a war that le everyone rather lifeless and aimless. But let s back up a bit. Mildred s hometown was Portland, and it was here that she met and married her husband, George. He was soon to graduate from college and his number was coming up for the dra. They had to hurry up and get married before he was called away. Her ladies in wai ng dug out former prom dresses, and Mildred s wedding gown was made by a lady who told her to go shopping, find the dress of your dreams, put it on hold, and she would make a sketch of it and sew it for her. Thus, Mildred was able to keep expenses to a minimum. Mildred and George were married in the spring and sure enough, he was dra ed in the fall and was sent to California. Mildred tried to make do in their apartment but that only lasted 2 3 weeks. I didn t get married for this?! she thought. She packed her bags and joined him in northern California, staying in motels while they looked for a home. Their first baby was born in the base hospital. A er two years, George was released from the military and they ended up in Sea le. They were offered a job in Northern California but rejected the move and came to Portland. Their years in Sea le is where the Stone Soup comes in. Mildred was taking a walk by a creek near Puget Sound one day and saw a big stone si ng in a water run off area. Somebody had put a sign on the stone with a bucket nearby and invited people to bring contribu ons for soup. Times were lean and as Mildred describes it, people were tending to wander aimlessly with no purpose in life. Churches had not recovered from the war, jobs were scarce, and there was not much to do. So why not contribute to the stone soup? They did, and life took on new interest. Weekly they might take something down to the bucket and have a wonderful meal with friends and new acquaintances. This lasted for about a year with even some entertainment on the beach. However, when couples started having children and the weather was turning bad, they got permission from a church on the hill to hold their gatherings in the basement. They were then able to provide some care for babies and young children, they added some singing, and occasionally a devo onal was held. A fun me was had by all, par cularly when they reached out to children with snacks, helped them with their homework, played table games, and even did some square dancing. When mes are hard, it proves that with a li le bit of innova on and crea vity like stone soup, people can help one another. They had something to look forward to and everyone was le with an a tude of thanksgiving. Let s be grateful this Thanksgiving for the blessings that our ours, and like Mildred, find that it is in giving that we are blessed. 3

Residents put together an hour of comedy that was incredibly funny and promises to be a popular entertainment in the future. Bert Schmidt and Don Bills were the master minds behind the event and came up with special comedic awards, skits, humorous stories, and a medley of humorous songs by the Hearthstone Singers. The Ac vity Room was full and there was constant laughter throughout the 45 minute program. Our former and current administrators were hilarious as they gave out awards and Thelma McFarland stole the show with her story about the five men in her life : Will Power, Charlie Horse, John, Art Thri s, and Ben Gay. You ve got to hear it to believe it! Watch for more programs in upcoming months!!! 8 Welcome to Hearthstone... Hearthstone of Beaverton SW Hart Rd. Beaverton, Oregon Locally owned with our mission to serve with love, respect, and integrity. Sebas an joined Hearthstone of Beaverton full me on October 24. He was born on April 2 in Lu lu, Georgia and is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the largest of the toy breeds and smallest of the Spaniel breed. He reconnected with his Mom, Grace, on October 19 in Nashville, Tennessee to come to his forever home a er going through the Star Puppy Program. He has had basic training and knows how to sit, come, down, go outside, and I ll be back. He LOVES to play with squeaky toys and be with people and is somewhat overzealous in wan ng to kiss everyone he meets, animal or human. He is very smart and is working hard to train his Mom and everyone with whom he comes in contact. So far he s succeeding...
