May this year bring us luck, happiness and good health. Chula Vista Lodge No. 626 Officers Ani Lontoc, PM Master 2016 is now officially over, and most of the activities intended for last year went smoothly as planned, and I would like to give thanks to all those who volunteered and shared their time with us, especially to all members who, one way or another, contributed to the success of our ritual and membership campaign. Thirteen (13) was initiated, eight (8) was passed, and nine (9) was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason last year. The performance was overwhelming and I am extremely proud of everyone. I feel blessed to have been elected as this year s Master of the Lodge, to serve on a leadership team with members whom I respect and admire. More united, more collaborative, more efficient. That s what we re aiming for. Consider this our very open invitation not only to attend our monthly activities but also our invitation for you to share us your initiatives, ideas, and concerns. Please feel free to contact me, WB Terry, our Secretary, or any other officer of the lodge. I am deeply honored and forever grateful for giving me your trust and confidence to serve you again from the East. With humility, I renew my Masonic obligation to you, to the lodge and all our brothers. The start of the year is an especially good opportunity for me to focus more on being a Mason and to learn more about the teachings inculcated in us on how to become a better man. Most importantly, it is a good time for me to reflect on the obligations I owe to God. Although my journey as a Mason is forever, this year, as your Master, I promise that I will perform my duties and responsibilities to the best of my ability. I wish you all the best in life and God-speed in all your undertakings. See you all on our installation of 2017 officers on January 20, 2017, Friday at 6:30pm. After an exciting, challenging and busy 2016 that s also full of achievements, the ensuing Masonic Year brings new beginnings and new opportunities for Chula Vista Lodge # saw many and varied Lodge activities from conferrals, degree practices, stated meetings, fund raising and fellowship. As of the end of this year, we initiated, passed and raised more candidates than in recent years, and more than all the other lodges in District 935. And we have a few more candidates lined up for this new year. We have gained a good number of members, but sadly, we also lost some who have passed on to the Celestial Lodge above. I m filled with great pride that Chula Vista Lodge Lodge now has a strong team that can confer all the degrees employing only in-house Chula Vista talents. And with your support, we will grow our team, and develop a deep bench of proficient Brethren. Brethren who in due time, I hope, will pursue a journey to the Oriental Chair and lead us. 2 Greetings from the West continued. Our dinners and fellowships were equally successful, having raised Masonic spirit, and more importantly, promoted good company and brotherly love among the Brethren. Now, I d like to thank the Lodge for allowing me the chance to serve as your Senior Warden thrice over while fully engaged in and outside the Lodge, including serving the Hall Association. This new year, being able to sit on the sidelines is what I personally consider a success because there are several Brethren able to fill in behind me. I may no longer be a Pillar nor occupy one of the Officers chairs, but you can rest assured that I will remain engaged supporting and obeying all summonses coming from the Master and the Lodge. On Friday, January 20, 2017, our new set of officers will be installed. Let's attend this very important event and display our support to our elected Master, Brother Gloriani Lontoc and his officers. They have risen to the occasion when the Lodge truly needs them. To reciprocate, let's be more than just dues paying members. Let's engage and reconnect. FROM THE SECRETARY S DESK The New Year approaches, with anticipation of a brighter future, and the selection of resolutions the help us be better citizens in our sphere of influence. Life drops obstacles in our path, that we, as we get older, learn to navigate through to help create a better life for those around us. The Lodge has a full line of Officers, that are eager to elevate the experience of our Kind and Gentle craft to new and better levels for those that enter to improve themselves and help elevate our Lodge to be a better positive influence on our community. We have a full line of Officers who will be installed on the same day, our new President takes the oath of office to lead the wonderful free country, we are privileged to live in. After having a family oriented Christmas, and celebrating the incoming New Year, please take time to attend our open installation and bring anyone that may be interested in knocking on the door of opportunity, to partake in being a part of something that will help them become a better person, father, husband, and brother. Chula Vista Masonic Lodge and the City of Chula Vista have been doing this together since I will need 18 two person teams for that day. It is from 8:00 Am to about 11:30 AM. On December 1, 2016, members from the Fremont, Union City, and Newark communities gathered with Masonic Homes residents and staff to celebrate the Homes 16th annual holiday tree lighting a popular local event filled with friendships old and new, along with festive seasonal cheer. The Masonic Homes was honored to welcome a number of wonderful performances to this year s top-notch musical program. San Francisco icon Val Diamond of Beach Blanket Babylon fame thrilled the crowd with her vivacious performance. The Masonic Homes first-ever bell choir made its debut, with residents of all ages contributing their musical talents to play lovely arrangements of holiday favorites. The Fremont Christian Jazz Band and James Logan High School Show Choir delighted those in attendance with their lively performances. And, the Delaine Eastin Elementary Choir and Fremont Youth Symphony Flute Trio showcased the talents of the Tri-City s youngest musicians. Guests enjoyed a variety of family-friendly activities, including free photographs with Santa, holiday ornament and card making workshops, holiday raffles, and a Santa parade. Festive treats, including roasted chestnuts, holiday cookies, popcorn, and hot beverages were in abundance. And, about 120 guests embraced a spirit of giving by donating new children s toys to Toys for Tots. More than 1,200 people attended the festivities, including the mayors of Union City and Newark, Carol Dutra-Vernaci and Alan Nagy; Executive Director of the Union City Chamber of Commerce Rey Sison; Kelly Klug, cochair of the Union City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Battalion Chief Alan Evans, Engine 33, of the Alameda Fire Department; Angus Cochran, executive director of the Washington Hospital Healthcare System; and a number of other notable community leaders. 5 2017 Individual Ritual Competition: Achieving Meaningful Performance! Each year, the grand master and grand lecturer hold a Ritual Competition to highlight the importance of ritual excellence within the California jurisdiction, encouraging brothers to continue their lifelong study of the ritual and its lessons. Grand Master John R. Heisner and Grand Lecturer Jack N. Rose have just announced that all Master Masons are invited to compete in the 2017 Individual Ritual Competition for the title of Best Ritualist in each division. This year s competition will involve the delivery of the charges for all three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. In order to participate, competitors must complete and submit a Registration Form to their district inspector (or AGL, in the inspector s absence) by March 1, Read the rules. If you ve been looking for an opportunity to practice your ritual performance, there s no better time than now. Follow these helpful pointers to lead you on the right track. Commit plenty of time to individual practice and group rehearsals. Set a schedule and stick to it. When members take on a new part, encourage them to enlist a coach. It ll improve their performance, and it s an opportunity for fellowship. Ask everyone to learn more than just his own part. If one brother forgets his line, the rest of you will be able to carry on or prompt him. Instill trust. Once your group trusts each other, you can rely on each other s lines and movements to cue your own. Critique each other s pronunciation, inflection, and delivery to preserve the true intent of the ritual. Talk about the meaning of the floor work. How do movements serve as symbols in space? Ask a brother to sit in on degree practice and give big picture feedback the overall emotion and impact. Appreciate how the ritual s significance deepens over the years and with different combinations of brothers. Remember: Every time you perform the ritual, you re retracing a centuries-old tradition and making an impression on your candidate.
