Protecting them from urban development or any other structural development that threatens these sacred grounds. Thirty Acres of Civil War Battlefield land are destroyed every day. These battlefields are part of our national heritage; scenes of struggle and sacrifice where American Union and Confederate lost their lives. The CWPT is working to preserve these hallowed grounds as President Abraham Lincoln called them, so that future generations can learn from them and can learn to appreciate their hard-won freedom. Today, our Civil War Battlefields are being destroyed at an alarming rate. Where more than 600,000 Americans gave their lives, is being paved over for shopping malls & Condo s. The same land upon which our nation was formed, where our ancestors fought & died, some of our ancestors survived and gave witness to the cost and blood that was shed upon these hallowed lands. These lands are also being consumed by fast food restaurants, amusement parks, and other forms of urban puke!. Nearly 20 percent of America s Civil War battlefields have already been destroyed denied forever to future generations. Of those that remain, only 15 percent are protected by the Federal Government. There is only one national organization working to save all of these battlefields: The Civil War Preservation Trust. They have a gift shop, selling items such as wind breaker and lined jackets, Fleece blankets and Vests, Baseball and bucket hats, T-shirts and Denim long sleeved shirts, Polo shirts, patches and travel mugs, in which items are sold to generate funds to support this fight. Donations are tax deductible. Please give what you can, or make a purchase and help stop this ugly
4 structural deployment/invasion. Please write to your congressman and ask to support the Battlefield Preservation Initiative/Program. To profile the Civil War Preservation Trust. ALL THIS CAN BE FOUND on the AD sections of THE BANNER or on the Sons of Union Veterans National Website: < >. * COOKS CORNER: BUTT N BEAN SOUP.. 1-lb of white navy beans, 1 ½ lb butt end of Ham, Water, 2 c. celery (chopped), 1 sm. Onion (peeled & chopped), 1 to 2 potato s (peeled & chopped), 4 to 6 Tomatoes (chopped), 2 tsp of Parsley, Salt & Pepper. Soak beans in clean water at least overnight. Drain off soaking water, add new water to cover and cook until beans are soft. If extra pot is available, cook ham separately in water enough to cover for about 2 ½ hours: otherwise, throw it in with the beans. Add celery, onion and potatoes and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Add the tomatoes and parsley just long enough to get them hot. Salt & Pepper as seems right. * Camp Abraham Lincoln #10: Wishes to thank: WAYNE THALLS for EIGHT YEARS of dedicated service to the Office of Secretary & SIX YEARS as Treasurer. Wayne Thalls is one of the co-founders who re-opened Camp Lincoln 10 in His patience to hold this duel office for so long is greatly appreciated & with great admiration. + Wayne has served his duel office to the core meaning of Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty. THANKYOU WAYNE!
5 * Civil War Collector s warning : Topic: Binoculars, French companies did not engrave just below the eye pieces: Signal Corps on the left, and Day & Night on the right, during the Civil War, it was just at the end of the Indian Campaigns during the reconstruction era that these companies began to do this, so their Binocular product would be more appealing & attractive to the United States Armory Contractors as well as Civilian business who had business contracts with Federal and State. However, they did see extensive use during the Spanish-American War. ALSO: Beware of the name of Conestoga Corporation of Bethlehem, PA. This company produced many Binoculars as Civil War style, during the 1930 s, also it has a straight tube design, and is clearly marked : Made in America, there old, but not that old, they were considered inexpensive Binoculars, so there is no real quality as well as no real authenticity to this brand. This particular item is often on EBAY as well as the previously mentioned binoculars from France. And both are often misrepresented as Authentic or Original Civil War binoculars. Also beware of the phrase Civil War era, that can mean from 1855 thru 1880 and does not specify as an authentic War item or as a Military item. * FORT POINT, SAN FRANCISCO: Saturday, January 26 th 2008, Lincoln 10 members: CC: Thomas Brown, Sec.&Treas. : Tim Reese & Graves Registration Officer: Don Fusilier carpooled to the Fort arriving at 9:40am. The event began with a flag raising ceremony then followed by Drills and other activities. It did rain hard in the surrounding Counties on Thursday and Friday and that hindered a lot of re-enactors from attending, But the people came, followed by a couple of Tour Busses in the afternoon. The weather was lightly over-cast, the wind factor was minimal at best, it was there, but no hat blew off into the bay and the temperature would be rated Chilly at best. The scenic visual, well the sky was gray, but a good portion of the City of San Francisco and Alcatraz island was extremely clear. The water was a bit choppy toward the coast line, so some car s received the Salt Water Car wash treatment. It was a grand excellent day at Fort Point. An Estimated 40 re-enactors manage to attend on Saturday and all of them were glad they did. Other SUVCW camps attended, DC: Jerry Sayre of Wm Pittenger 21 was present with Camp display as well as PDC & Aux Pres. Tad & Rachelle Campbell, CC: Welch & Brothers: Avila, Marti, Ferman arrived with their well known display. At 1;30 (previously mention on front page) we all had the Installation of Officer s. Members of the 20 th Maine, 2 nd Wisconsin, and others, some members from the California Historical
6 Artillery Society and a band showed up, they were around 6 to 8 of them, and their performance was excellent. Camp Lincoln 10 members in attendance. ( Photo above ). Second year tour of command duty Camp Commander: Thomas J. Brown, newly installed Secretary & Treasurer: Timothy P. Reese and, Graves Registration Officer: Donald P. Fusilier * Editors note : Well 2008 is here, I, CC: Thomas Brown, and GRO: Don Fusilier attended the Fort Point event, overcast but no rain, and mild wind factor, it was a most excellent day at the old fort. I hope members are considering attending Bro. Fusiliers lecture on Civil War Medical practices at the Monterey Peninsula College as well as considering attending the 122 nd Annual Encampment in Camp San Luis Obispo. Its always a fun experience. In the Spring we should have a solid schedule through out A list of upcoming events, from General meetings, Memorial Day thru Veterans Day. God bless you all. In Fraternity, Charity, & Loyalty, your humble servant. Secretary & Treasurer: Timothy P. Reese, PCC. The Lincoln Wire, Newsletter Editor.
7 ********* The Camp commanders address ********* Thomas J. Brown Brothers of Camp Lincoln 10, * It seems as if it was only yesterday that I composed my last address to you; time moves awfully fast when on keeps busy! Keeping busy is a good thing, but I am not sure about the swiftness of time. We can feel very good about the activities of our small camp during this past year, for they were many and varied. The New Year promises to offer similar activities. Brothers Reese, Fusilier & myself attended the Fort Point event this past weekend, to start things off. Though the preceeding week was stormy, the weather could not have been much better on Saturday, the 26 th. There was hardly enough wind to carry the massive national flag, raised in the morning; an unusual circumstance indeed. Our next event will be the Department Encampment at Camp San Luis Obispo in March. Other events in which members of our camp will participate include the Saint Patrick s Day Parade in San Francisco, marching with the 69 th New York Regiment, and Roaring Camp in Felton with the Memorial Day Event at Evergreen Cemetery. The Civil War Roundtable got of to a good start in its new location at the Monterey Peninsula College, with many thanks to Dr. Richard Kezirian, who has been instrumental in getting us settled, generously providing his class room as a home for our lectures. The camp needs new members, and we will continue to work on this, as well as to encourage old members who have become inactive who have become inactive to come back. Brother Don Fusilier has kindly consented to become Graves Registration Officer covering Monterey County.
8 I look forward to a productive year serving Camp Abraham Lincoln # 10. In Fraternity, Charity & Loyalty, Camp Commander: Thomas J. Brown Camp President Abraham Lincoln # 10 Serving : Santa Cruz, San Benito & Monterey Counties. The Winter 2008 issue of The LINCOLN WIRE.
