Larry Jones Greetings DTGCA Members & Friends, Well we spent a little time in Arizona this winter & came home way to early temperature wise. +75 degrees in Arizona, -12 degrees at home. Brrrrr. I received the news of the passing of Bruce Foster, friend, gun collector, advocate of gun rights & past president of DTGCA. My condolences go out to his wife & family. Bruce will be missed by many. With our gun show season coming to a close we are tying up loose ends with our new venues at Sioux Falls & Fargo. We are working on securing some better room rates at close by motels in both cities. The 2 shows in Sioux Falls under new management went very well. The Trophy Show was very well attended & we received several letters of praise & approval. The Collector Classic also went quite well with a few glitches to be worked out. I think both shows have no place to go except to get better each year. I would like to congratulate Bob Campbell (manager) for a job well done. Next year (2016) with the Trophy Show in Sioux Falls going to the Convention Center & the Fargo show going to the Air Museum these shows can do nothing except get bigger & better. Well I m about out of things to talk about except the warmer weather that I hope is not too far off. That means shooting gophers, relaxing, camping, maybe a little fishing, car shows & just warm weather things in general. I guess that s about all for now. I wish you all a wonderful Spring. If the need arises you can contact me anytime by or phone with questions, problems or concerns. Until next time, Larry I m in color on the WEB

I was fascinated by the workmanship of it. They are superior in mechanics and quality along with durability and very user friendly. A friend who collected large frame Marlins advised me to concentrate on a specific type to collect. I decided to pursue small frames, 22 s and 32 s from the date 1891 to the 1930 s. I now have the model numbers and variations, 1891, 1892, 1897 and old 39 s. Over the 30 some years I have upgraded the collection one by one by trading and purchasing. I now have 16 different Marlins in this category. Daryl s collection has received numerous awards at the DTGCA gun shows. PINE RIDGE AGENCY REMINGTON HAND GUN Owner Jim Yeoman

6 The Last Decade at Whitneyville Armory author Dale A. Olson, Belfry, MT I have often been asked Why do you collect these guns? That s a hard question to answer. It s sort of like why do you like Chevy's or Fords. I guess there are just some things that appeal to oneself more than others. My earliest recollection of seeing one of these was in a hunting magazine in the 50 s. It wasn t until years later that I actually saw one in a gun shop. I was hooked. Something about it was so different from the Winchesters and Marlins that I just had to find out more about them. Soon I was trading off Winchesters and Marlins for my new found love. Trading off all my others guns, and buying every one I could find, I soon learned that my pockets were not nearly deep enough for that game. At the time there was little information available pertaining to these guns. While discussing my dilemma with Peter Erickson he directed me to Sam Maxwell s book Lever Action Magazine Rifles. This gave me direction. I am no longer an accumulator, now I am a collector. A brief history on Eli Whitney. Of course us older folks all know that he invented the cotton gin (back when they still taught history in school). This simple machine greatly saved workers hours of hard work separating the lint from the husk. This machine was so easy to make that he spent all his money in court defending his patent. In 1798 the government put out contracts to produce muskets by private armories. Whitney had never made a gun, had no armory and was deep in dept. Not letting that stop him he obtained a loan for several thousand dollars and received a contract to build 10,000 muskets. Although not the first to use machining that would duplicate parts exactly, he is often given credit for developing the system of interchangeable parts. Many more muskets continued to be made at the Whitneyville Armory. After his death, Eli Jr. continued making muskets until the end of the Civil War. Metallic cartridges were now developed and becoming popular. Andrew Burgess presented Whitney with a design for a lever action repeating rifle. This gun was completed in time to submit it for the military trials of 1878 to accept a repeating rifle in government cartridge. None of the weapons submitted were accepted, however Whitney went on to produce somewhat short of 2000 of these rifles, carbine and musket configurations. Samuel V. Kennedy, plant superintendent, received a patent for a modified carrier. These guns were called the Kennedy, later in mid production the lever was changed from the s shape to a full loop and became known as the Whitney- Kennedy. These guns were made for 6 years and were found in.32,.38,.44,.40-60,.45-60, and There were an estimated 23,500 produced. In 1886, William C. Scharf came to Whitney with a rifle that was very similar to the Colt-Burgess model 1883 designed by Andrew Burgess. This rifle was a little larger than the Colt-Burgess and was also chambered in the.44, 38 and 32 cartridges. Less than 2000 of these guns were manufactured. Production ceased in 1888 when Whitney sold the armory to Winchester. Comparing to the number of Winchesters, Marlin and other repeating rifles manufactured these numbers are relatively small, thus making them harder to find, and exciting when one is located. By setting up my display at various gun shows, I have gleaned considerable information, in fact so much so that I wrote a book about them called. The Burgess Long Range Repeating Rifle Model I have included interesting information about Burgess, Whitney, and the manufacture of these guns as well as some interesting stories about some of the men that owned them. The back portion of my book contains serial numbers and configurations of Burgess, Kennedy and Scharf guns that have thus far been identified as there are no factory records that exist. This is an ongoing project with new information received regularly. Any information is gladly accepted. The book can be ordered from me for $ $5.00 shipping at: Dale A.
