1 ILLINOIS STATE COUNCIL Knights of Columbus May 2008 ONE FAMILY UNDER GOD Editor Robert J. Fuggiti STATE DEPUTY Phil Barone BUILDING A BETTER WORLD. ONE COUNCIL CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I hope you can feel the EXCITEMENT building as we get closer to the 110 th Annual State Convention. I hope your council is having the Great Year that comes from the team effort of the Officers and Membership Family working in unison to support the Church and improve the Community and grow your Council and the Order. The Fraternal Year has now moved into the Stretch Run it is now time to Bring it Home to ensure a Successful Year for your Council and this Great Jurisdiction of Illinois. The Jurisdiction of Illinois is again having an outstanding year in both Charitable and Programming Activities. We are the envy of many states throughout the Knights of Columbus. We have made some tremendous strides, in the last few years, in demonstrating that the Councils in Illinois can take that same expertise in Charities and Programming and make a Real Impact in both the Parish and the Community. Our Vocations Program is truly having a positive impact on the Church Community and through your efforts the State Council was presented with the ITE AD JOSEPH Award from the St Joseph Seminary in Chicago. This program needs even more support from the councils to move forward to make the future Priest of Illinois feel that they are part of Our Knights of Columbus Family. The Membership Planning and Action Programs that compliment our strong Charitable and Programming Activities are making a real difference in ensuring that each council and the Order in general will have a bright future. The results in Membership recruitment reflect that many councils are achieving success and enjoying the benefits that new members bring to the council family. As of 4/15/08 the State of Illinois has recruited over 2,000 members and is a There is a potential of over 100 councils that with focused efforts can achieve the highest honor that the Supreme Council can bestow as being recognized with Star Council Status for this Fraternal Year. The Membership results by Diocese as a percentage of Goal is as follows: Belleville 20% Chicago 54% Joliet 45% Peoria 25% Rockford 49% Springfield 31% This indicates that much has been accomplished but there is much work to be done in ALL areas of the state to make each and every council successful. There is success by councils that should be noted and recognized as 60 councils have already achieved 100% membership and will receive FREE Banquet tickets to the upcoming State Convention, if still 100% by 5/1/08 These councils are as follows: COUNCIL COUNCIL NAME DIST 282 San Salvador Archangel Lafayette Sheridan-Carroll Litchfield Waukegan Odell 60 1

We need to make sure that the Membership planning has been completed and that ALL the Council members are Actively Working. First Degree dates should have been scheduled and should be reported as well as making sure all the Prospects have been signed and advised of the degree dates. Financial Secretaries need to submit the Form 100 to Supreme in a timely manner to reflect the council achievement and growth. It is a Great Time to be a Knight of Columbus. The Church and your Community need the Knights of Columbus now more than ever You are the KEY to the success of your council. Without YOU the task is more difficult and the resources more limited. Please make the effort to devout your most valuable time to helping your council succeed. I ask each Knight to look at himself in the mirror and ask the basic question Am I the Knight of Columbus I want and should Be and what am I going to do to be that Knight that I should Be? This is a matter of PRIDE For Myself, For My Family, For My Council, For My Order, and For My Church. WE NEED YOU NOW!!!!! The State Convention is just around the corner. The State Convention will be held on Memorial Day Weekend at the WESTIN HOTEL in LOMBARD IL. This is brand new hotel with marvelous facilities and terrific dining and shopping opportunities right outside its door as it is adjacent to the Yorktown Mall Shopping Complex. 2

3 The highlight of this year s State Convention will the presence of His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, the Archbishop of Chicago. He will be the principal Celebrant of the Saturday Evening Mass and will speak at the Banquet Dinner that Evening. He will bring personal reflections on Pope Benedict XVI historic trip to the United States. The State Convention will provide many activities and opportunities for each attendee to meet and bond with their Brother Knights from ALL around this great state of Illinois The State Convention will begin with a Welcome Hawaiian Party on Friday Night in the main ballroom. Saturday morning there will be Mass followed by an All Day open Forum that invites ALL family members to join in Celebrating the Knights of Columbus in Illinois with Squires Installation of Officers, State of the Order presentation, Insurance Agent Awards, Council Awards, Family and Knight of the Year awards and More. The Awards Program will be one of the highlights of the State Convention. Your council deserves to be recognized for the great work that is performed and this can only happen through your active participation. There must be representatives from your council in attendance at the State Convention. In addition to the many great activities and happenings that will be part of the State Convention; there will be Resolutions put forward for voting by the representatives that will have an impact on both you and your Council. In addition the Election of Officers to lead this Great Order will also occur. It is truly a sad situation that Councils miss the opportunity to be counted and heard on the issues because there isn t a Council Representative in attendance. Please don t let this happen to your council. I look forward to seeing each of you at the State Convention and have a chance to have you enjoy the fellowship and hospitality of the Knights of Columbus. We ALL have the opportunity and resources to achieve OUR Goal, making the Knights of Columbus in Illinois an Active, Strong, and Vibrant Fraternity that is second to none. Each of US must make that commitment to our councils that will add new members this fraternal year. The time is NOW and the person that is needed is YOU. With ALL of our efforts the Knights of Columbus in Illinois will continue to be a Leader and the Bright Jewell of the Order. STATE SECRETARY James Bednar ieducate1@yahoo.com As I sit down today to write I realized that the State Convention is only 45 days away. Wow, the year is almost gone and we are closing in on a new fraternal year. As we stand today we are on the positive side with membership which means we are asking Catholic men and their families to join us, how great. Let s use the time from now until convention and the end of the fraternal year to make this our best year ever. Now if we would only extend an invitation to our council members to come and experience the State Convention, thus giving them the opportunity to meet more new friends and see how others do things in their councils. I know for a fact that if you show a member what the State Convention is about, they will see that it is one 3

4 big training field where they can have fun, and share thoughts and ideas with others. I remember my first State Convention and I remember how much I learned and how many new ideas I took home. And I look back at all the conventions that I have attended since and how much I continue learned. I would like to share one big thing I learned from attending the State Convention. And that was that no idea is a bad one and that just because it did not work for you, does not mean it won t work for me or someone else. I ask all that you encourage and ask your council officers and members to join us at the beautiful and new Westin Hotel in Lombard, just a short drive from the home of our State Treasurer Rich and Linda Spada. Pat and I are looking forward to seeing the good friends and old faces along with many new face s and new friends enjoying and learning at the 2008 State Convention. ILLINOIS KNIGHTS OF ACTION Vivat Jesus! At 20 th annual Night of Knights dinner hosted at Msgr. STATE TREASURER Richard Spada, richspada@comcast.net Celebrate and Have a Good Time! Great things are happening in Illinois; and, it s time to celebrate and have a good time! We ve all been celebrating the 125 th anniversary of our Order in so many ways doing outstanding charitable, community and fraternal deeds. We see councils are working diligently to grow their ranks and consequently our Order through planning and integration of recruitment with all of their activities. It shows because as of this writing many councils show participation in recruiting at least one new member; while others are working toward double STAR council status! WOW!!! Council leaders have shared their pride in instituting new activities and being responsive to their members and the results are manifested in their council strength and growth and the best is yet to come! Convention time is nearing and awards for council efforts will surely be cause for celebration. Convention is also a time for the entire state family to join in one spot to get to know each other better and to share ideas and experiences. Our families will have much to do with activities being planned by our convention co-chairmen and committee which includes fun for the children, souvenirs from the Country Store, Training opportunities, Mass with all Brother Knights and their families, and of course breaking bread with each other at the State Deputy s Banquet. Our ladies will be entertained with a luncheon and a special guest; and, there will even be a ladies mini-convention to focus on their individual accomplishments as auxiliaries. Surely there is something for everyone! We also gather in thanksgiving for the blessing of celebration for progress in the cause of canonization of our Founder and now Venerable Servant of God, Father Michael J. McGivney. There is so much to be happy about and we are all part of the celebration! This year, our Holy Father visits the United States and addresses the Order in April, which will likely already have passed by the time this newsletter arrives at your mailbox. What a great year to celebrate! Linda and I look forward to seeing all of you and 4

5 celebrating with all of you at convention in May. God Bless you all! Rich Spada, State Treasurer SQUIRES IN ACTION achieve the membership goals for your council. Council growth is so important to your Church and your community. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the State Convention this year. Vivat Jesus, Skip STATE WARDEN Robert Bukowski What do you think of when you hear the word SPRING? Chief Squire Steve Estes presents Squire of the Year award to Nick Ashbaker with Gerry Mattix- Wand looks on. STATE ADVOCATE Donald Skip Kinyon Brother Knights, April is here and that means the State Convention is just around the corner. The State Advocate's office has been busy compiling the resolutions which will be voted on at this year's State Convention. Thank you to all councils who have submitted resolutions for the delegates to consider The State Advocate office has also been answering many questions concerning the new tax filing procedures in regards to the 990e form. There are many avenues to answer your questions such as, The State Office, The State Advocates Office and of course the Supreme Advocate's office. Any of these areas are more than willing to help with your questions. I must say the Supreme Advocate's office is a very big help and are extremely nice to work with The State Convention will soon be upon us and that means two things. Now is the time to make sure your council has filed all of the correct forms and has met all of it's obligations in order to achieve the many awards that can be obtained at the convention. And, we are in the final quarter of our membership year. You still have time to Rainbows of Flowers, Warmer Weather, Easter, Spring Break, Lush Green Grass, Hummingbirds in flight, Sunbeams of Light, Flowers in Bloom, Time to Spring Clean, Chirping Birds, Buzzing Bees, Tadpoles develop into Frogs, April Showers bring May Flowers or The Smell of Fresh Cut Grass. Spring is all these things and more. I see it as a celebration that we made it through another tough winter and the promise of summer is ready to greet us just over the horizon. Spring in Illinois is also Convention Time. We will be celebrating the 110th Illinois State Council Convention in Lombard at the Westin Hotel, Memorial Day Weekend. May From year to year nothing ever stays the same: new experiences, new challenges, new energy and new life always stand ready to greet us. The convention gives us the opportunity to come together with members and their families from throughout the state to talk about these challenges and celebrate the accomplishments of this past fraternal year and look forward to the challenges of the year to come. Spring is also the time we need to look back and evaluate the past year and ask if we did all we could to grow our council membership and provide the training and mentoring to guarantee that our council has a future. Nancy and I look forward to being with you and your families at this year s convention as we celebrate being One Family Under God. 5

6 ILLINOIS KNIGHTS IN ACTION and June, only two major degrees are needed to meet the goal of 80. Please look at your council s calendar maybe you can be the council who schedules the 80 th major degree this year. The State Deputy is looking at awarding 65 free dinners at the State Deputy s dinner at this year the State Convention this was an incentive to Grand Knights and District Deputies earlier in the year for making membership goals in the first and second half of the fraternal year. When you pickup your Convention packets this year make sure you review the Membership Program booklet for the new fraternal year so next year your council/grand Knight can earn a free dinner from our State Deputy. STATE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR Frank Schwartz Jr., fjschwartzjr@ameritech.net Team 3000 Plus 184 Year to Date As the State Convention in Lisle approaches Team, 3000 continues on their way to meet their goal of bringing in 3000 new members in one fraternal year. Chicago is leading the state in the charge to meet that goal recruiting over 525 men year to date. Chicago s leadership is pushing starting Council First Degree Teams and to date in Chicago 7 councils are working to obtain their certifications. I Asked team Leader John Gecewicz what the key to his success was this year he said, PRIDE and working with a single message is the key to their success this year. John also stated Chicago would continue to lead the state in membership through the end of the fraternal year and certainly at the time of up coming State Convention to be held in Lombard Illinois (see the state web site for more information). The membership team of the entire state is also working on meeting their goal of 80 major degrees to be held in one year currently 78 are scheduled with opportunities still available in May Currently there are 80 Councils who could potentially win the Star Council Award. Is your council one. Please work with your Insurance Agents and District Deputies along with your Diocesan Membership Teams and figure out what you need to do in order to make your Council a Star Council. Lets work to make all 80 potential Stars a reality. The Spring Membership Drive was again a huge success with 151 councils participating in over 50 different types of membership recruiting events. The results netted 704 new members to our great order and pushed us even closer to making the Goal of 3000 new members in a single fraternal year. New Council Development continues to push forward with the newest effort Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Council being added to the list of Spanish speaking councils in our Great Jurisdiction. This brings the yearly total to four New councils and two reactivations. Our NCD Director, John Muldoon, is still pushing for five more efforts to be completed by this years State Convention. John is also looking for new sites where he can continue to work on the dream of Fr. McGivney: every church being served by a Knights of Columbus Council. Thanks to our retention, Chairmen Al Urban 70 plus men have continued their membership in the Knights of Columbus. 6

They also gave $2,500 from their annual Pro-Life Breakfast to local Pro-Life Agencies STATE CHARITIBLE ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR Bill Linz Jr., w.m.linz@att.net Do not turn back when you are just at the goal. (Publilius Syrus,~100 BC) The deadline for all Charitable Activities (Newman, MR/LD, GAF, Vocations) forms and monetary donations is NOON, APRIL 30, Sending your information early or via overnight mail is a good way to ensure you meet this deadline. Any forms, reports, and/or monies received after this deadline will be filed under next year s goals. I would like to extend a personal invitation for you to participate in a 40 year celebration. This is a celebration that many of us have had the opportunity to take part over the past few years; one that succeeds due to our servitude as Knights of Columbus. The celebration I am referring to is the Chicago Special Olympic Spring Games. The foundation of our organization is to assist persons with disabilities. Yet, when athletes compete in Special Olympics, there is a celebration of abilities. Special Olympics was created to celebrate unique possibilities and talents all persons possess. We look within ourselves, our children, and others to do the best of their abilities in everyday life. By sharing with Special Olympic athletes during competitions, we can truly value talents we and our loved ones possess. Your efforts are noted deep within the hearts of each athlete and their families. Although they may not thank you personally, you will see their gratitude for continuing this tradition by the smiles on their faces. The theme this year for the 40 th anniversary of Special Olympics is Dream It, Dare It, Do It ; let each of us rise to the challenge these athletes and their families face each and every day. Another celebration coming up in May is the annual Knights of Columbus State Convention which will be held May at the Westin Hotel in Lombard, IL. This is a time to celebrate our achievements accomplished at the council, district and state levels. Joining together as a family, we are able to recognize goals met, plan endeavors for future success, renew our spirit and ignite our flames of faith. This unique opportunity calls us together to celebrate our brotherhood and faith. On behalf of the Charitable Activities Team: MR/LD co-chairmen: Ted Glaser and Ed Feeney; Newman chairman: Gary Gunderson; GAF chairman: Joseph Matlon; Vocation co- 8
