4 History 5History Canaan Bap st Church: A History Canaan Bap st Church was birthed on eptember 5, 1818 in a sparsely populated territory, which soon became America s 22nd tate, Alabama. Eighteen charter members led by Mr. John Henry, a licensed preacher from Tennessee, cons tuted the church. Mee ngs were held in homes for the first six years in the area now known as Jonesboro. The first church building was constructed in 1824 near the current entrance to Cedar Hill Cemetery where some early members are buried. t wasn t un l 1856 that land was given on which the church now stands. From its incep on, Canaan was a missionary church by plan ng other churches and birthing associa ons. New churches helped congregants have a place of worship closer to their homes in a day when travel was difficult at best. Hosea Holcomb was soon called to pastor the fledgling church. Coming from outh Carolina, he had a well-established reputa on as a pastor, hymn writer, and author. He was known as a domes c missionary, or circuit rider. He was commissioned to author a book of the early history of Bap sts in Alabama. The Alabama Bap st Conven on held one of its earliest mee ngs at Canaan in On July 31, 1841, od called home Rev. Holcomb, who had faithfully preached the ospel and led his fellow Bap sts for 22 years. He is buried in addler Cemetery in Hopewell, Alabama. The church persevered and grew through trials, relying on the promises of od. However, following the death of Pastor Holcomb, membership dwindled to seventeen. Then came the devasta ng years of the War between the tates. Church ac vi es ground almost to a halt and few records were kept. n spite of the physical, emo onal, and financial wounds, Canaan began to rebuild at the end of the war. The ever-missionary-minded church established Canaan Bap st Church for former slaves, many who had been members of the congrega on. That church remains a vibrant congrega on today in Bessemer. Recently, we joined together with them in a special service to commemorate their 150th Anniversary. n 1879, Canaan ins tuted unday chool or what some called abbath chool. Preaching services were generally held twice monthly. Pastors were poorly paid, if at all. rowth was interrupted again by World War. At least five young men from Canaan Bap st served. Mothers and sweethearts kni ed sweaters and socks and prayed for the boys over there. On the heels of the reat War, the panish Flu swept across the land wiping out more people than the war. Canaan was brought low and its 100th anniversary went virtually unno ced. The first full me pastor, Rev. Carl Cox, was called in 1938, For the first me, the treasurer was ordered to deposit church money into the bank. November of 1942 brought sorrow, once again, to the congrega on when fire destroyed the sanctuary constructed in During the post war years, Canaan enjoyed good growth. The current auditorium was completed in The church proclaimed the gospel on radio sta on WVOK. A bus service brought many families to unday chool, church services, and Vaca on Bible chool. n 1978, the church added their Family Life Center. The latest addi on is the new mul -purpose Children s Building, which includes a Family Chapel, built in The facili es provide the space needed to equip the saints for ministry. everal daughter churches were organized in the first decade and throughout Canaan s history. Records show Canaan has consistently increased its giving to missions through the Coopera ve Program. Members of the church serve regularly in missions regionally and na onally in places like Texas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Alaska. Members are engaged in global missions in the Ukraine, Belize, and uatemala. Beginning in 2010, Canaan partnered with the nterna onal Missions Board to plant a local congrega on in Conrada De La Cruz, uatemala. Part of that partnership included designing and helping build a new church facility. One year recently, over 100 members of Canaan went on mission trips. roups have assisted with Vaca on Bible chool, Medical Missions, Discipleship, Evangelism, Construc on, Pastoral Training for men, and sewing clinics for ladies. uatemalan Pastor, Oscar Lopez, has led a growing group of believers who have now planted their own churches in other villages. Canaan took its first mission trip to help their grandaughter church in Willywood, uatemala in Under the pastorate of Bro. Morgan Bailey, and a faithful staff, Canaan consistently strives to fulfill our Journey Process - Loving od, haring Life, erving Others and howing Jesus to the world. Today we celebrate our storied 200-year history, while looking forward to the opportunity to share Christ s story and live for His glory daily. May we faithfully make disciples in all the world un l Jesus returns! [Canaan Bap st Church: A History was researched and wri en by Patsy Essman.] 6
