2 Executive Director s Message - Steven Wendell A colleague gave me a Hanukkah gift this year with a message. It s a simple, round, metal pin. It reminded me of all the pins I ve had over the years, most of which are probably stored away in some box hidden in the depths of the attic. I ve forgotten what many of them said. But I do recall that wearing them at the time seemed relevant and important, not only to me, but to many others. Pins and bumper stickers were, I guess, the popular way you made public your personal beliefs before the social networking of tweets and blogs and Facebook posts, etc. I think the first statement pin I can recall said: I Like Ike. I also remember: Save Soviet Jewry, We Are All Zionists, Give Peace a Chance, Stop the War, and all those peace symbols in various colors. There was Make Love Not War, Equal Rights for All, and a black and white pin stating, We Shall Overcome. I m not so sure I would wear statement pins in public any more. I know that I long ago gave up putting bumper stickers on my car. As I got older, it just seemed to be asking for trouble on the highway by posting any message on my car that someone in another car traveling 60-plus MPH might not like. Or for that matter, just being parked in a parking lot with bumper sticker that says I Support Israel, seems to be asking for trouble. And now with social media outlets, you can post anything you want, almost, and do it in relative anonymity if you want without worrying about physical consequences. I do wear that pin with the American and Israeli flags intertwined on occasions that it seems appropriate and non-controversial. My new pin my Hanukkah gift reads: LOCK HIM UP! It didn t come with an explanation of exactly what it means. But I think I might wear it occasionally. It s been a long time since I wore a statement pin. Maybe it s time to go a little retro? Wonder if it has meaning to others? Virginia Health Services announces the opening of its newest division, Virginia Health Home Care, located in the Port Warwick community of Newport News. 3 Campaign Director s Message - Sarah Barnett Campaign 2018 Annual Campaign 2018 had a terrific last week of November and first week of December with the combined efforts of #GivingTuesday and Campaign Cabaret Kickoff. In total we raised $73, that week to help boost our current Campaign total to $481, with 213 gifts. We had great conversations, rallied terrific volunteers, and had a great party: a Campaign Cabaret where Andra London wowed us with her vocals. In a lobby set up as a comfortable coffee house, over 70 guests and donors enjoyed dessert, drinks, and great music. Andra, a former member of the Jewish singing trio, Visions, has a unique ability to entertain while connecting us to the importance of a strong Jewish community by telling her own story. Andra s story is not unique: Many of our own children experience the same communal trajectory of connection through, camp, youth activities, Hillel, Birthright and leadership development programs, all of which are supported by the Jewish Federation system. Some of them experience all of this here, while others move on to other communities who care for and nurture them as young Jewish adults. In turn we welcome Hillel students from out-of-town to whom we give as much support as possible, and when they graduate and perhaps remain in our community, work to incorporate them in to our communal activities and structure. At the end of Andra s terrific singing and storytelling, our Campaign Chair, Roy Lasris, challenged us to stretch and to increase our commitments as much as possible, resulting in an overwhelming number of pledge increases. This momentum is so important to strengthening the financial foundation on which we create and grow our community. Scenes from our Campaign Cabaret Kickoff event: Upcoming Campaign Events: The This is US season on TV may be over but our Campaign is still in full swing. 9 Jewish Family Service Chanukah Gift Program 2017 Jewish Family Service s 25th Annual Chanukah Gift Program was very successful this year. Each year, JFS reaches out to local Jewish families throughout Tidewater and the Peninsula who are in financial need with gifts and gift cards for their children and teens and Target gift cards for those without children. New this year, UJCVP supporters, Sam Parrucci and Ron Kleiman built a menorah for the UJCVP Lobby area. JFS staff, Libby Batten, and UJCVP staff, Sara Traster, then decorated the menorah and filled it with wish list items for Peninsula Jewish families in need. Over 100 gift tags were placed on the menorah and all were taken by eager donors. JFS received gifts of new clothing, winter coats, books, games, toys, school supplies, and Judaic items. Recipient families were excited and shed tears of joy when they came to pick up all of the great gifts donated to their children and teens. JFS s annual Chanukah Gift and Financial Assistance Program provides direct help to local Jewish families who are struggling financially. Many of the families who seek help are active members of the local community who attend schools and temple with everyone else. Although gifts are collected during the Chanukah Holiday, many of the gifts are used all year by these families. This year, a total of 15 different Peninsula families benefited at Chanukah time due to the kindness of local community donors. Specific wish list gifts and gift cards were provided to 8 Peninsula Jewish children/teens. Throughout 2018, these same families will continue to benefit from the gift card and cash donations given at Chanukah time as JFS provides gift cards towards medication, food, gas, clothing, and school supplies. Did you miss helping families in need at Chanukah time? Here is how you can assist JFS help local Jewish families in need year-round. Donate food, gas & grocery store gift cards, or cash! Donate items needed by JFS to help struggling Jewish families: grocery bags; Judaic/Jewish items; school supplies; paper goods; and cleaning/household supplies. All donations to JFS are tax deductible! For more information about any of these programs, contact Elizabeth (Libby) Batten, MSW, Peninsula Social Worker, Jewish Family Service of Tidewater at or EBatten@jfshamptonroads.org. A complete list of all of this year s donors to the program can be found after January 2018, on the JFS website: Come to the UJC for Lunch and Bingo. Hear about Stories on Growing Up, Looking for Love, and Walking Down the Aisle for Complete Strangers Jen Glantz is the world s first professional bridesmaid and founder of Bridesmaid for Hire. She s the heartbeat behind the website The Things I Learned From and is the author of the bestselling All My Friends are Engaged. She can be found in New York City wearing old bridesmaid dresses to the grocery store, or two-handing slices of one-dollar pizza. Jen Glantz will do a book reading, signing, and chat about what it was like starting Bridesmaid for Hire. Jen posted an ad on Craigslist advertising her services as a professional bridesmaid. When she woke up the next morning, it had gone viral. What began as a half-joke suddenly turned into a lifetime of adventure for Jen and more insight into the meaning of love than she was getting from OKCupid as she walked down the aisle at stranger after stranger s wedding. Fresh, funny, and surprisingly sweet, Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire) is an entertaining reminder that even if you don t have everything together, you can still be a total boss or, at the very least, a BFF to another girl in need. 14 Thank you for your support! Please Meryl and Kayren at to find out more. Reframing the Mikveh During Jewish conversion classes, I was troubled at the conventional presentation of the Mikveh as a misogynistic practice that seemed to be designed to do very little to lift and buoy women and men. Recently, though, Mikvuot have gone from being utilitarian, mandatory, and Orthodox-only to appealing, beautiful spaces that aim to help a woman (or man!) feel indulged and empowered. And the modern Mikveh is for all Jewish people Reconstructionist, Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, or unaffiliated! The aim is to introduce both observant and non-observant men and women to a modern mikveh with nontraditional uses, such as healing from illness or loss and milestone immersions. It is naturally in our DNA to recognize that the experience of going down into the calm, healing waters and coming up and breathing again is a transformation. Immersion into the mikveh provides an experience of slowing down and recognizing new chapters and phases of our lives. We hope to build a mikveh space where you can bring your whole selves your joys, your losses, your sorrows into the living waters of the mikveh. Please support a mikveh for ALL at the UJCVP Naming opportunities available for dedication to honor the memory of a loved one in the amount of $25,000 and up. Steering Committee: Gary Kavit * Meryl Kessler * Scott Wolf * Kayren Segall Do you have the soaps, shampoos, and other toiletries that are in your hotel rooms when you travel? People in homeless shelters, centers for abused women and other havens for the less fortunate can always use these items. Please bring them by the UJC when you can, and they will be distributed to persons in need. If you have any questions, please get in touch with: Stan Glasofer at or glasofer@verizon.net. 14 Jewish CommunityNews January 2018

15 December 11, 2017 By ejp JDC Chanukah Celebrations Bring Out Thousands across the Former Soviet Union This Chanukah, thousands of Jews in the former Soviet Union will celebrate the annual Festival of Lights by partaking in holiday celebrations and menorah lightings, concerts, holiday meals, and Jewish cultural workshops at the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee s (JDC) network of Hesed social welfare centers and Jewish community centers. Scores of JDC-trained volunteers of all ages are leading these Chanukah activities, a growing trend in the former Soviet Union. It s no small miracle that Chanukah s theme of bringing light to the darkness is being fully realized today by enthusiastic volunteers and thriving Jewish communities At Israeli Cultural Center in Odessa, Beit Grand JCC led Chanukah-themed art classes for families. Included was a special volunteer project guided by young adults for people with special needs. Photo courtesy JDC. that have emerged a full generation after the fall of Communism. Our celebrations across the former Soviet Union, and around the world, are reminders that Chanukah s message of perseverance and triumph in the face of the odds is still resonant today, said David Schizer, JDC CEO. In Ukraine, activities in Kiev range from Chanukah-themed art workshops to a Maccabee Revolt-focused game of laser tag, teaching teens and their parents about the holiday s origins. An estimated 350 people will attend a Chanukah celebration in the Gomel region of Belarus in addition to a workshop making sufganiyot that will be held by the local Hesed social welfare center. In Bobruisk, children will attend the Chanukah Miracle event combining Jewish history and traditions with competitions and quizzes put together by local volunteers. At the Eliahu Hesed social welfare center in Georgia, Chanukah celebrations and study sessions, drum and fire shows in Tbilisi and Rustavi, and volunteers visits to the homes of bedridden Jewish elderly to present them with gifts will mark the holiday. In Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the Jewish community will have daily menorah lightings and also a dance party with approximately 100 people attending. In Karaganda, Kazakhstan, a community-wide celebration for around 150, and a dreidel-making workshop in Pavlodar, are planned. In isolated locations in Siberia and the Russian Far East, community-wide Chanukah festivities in Krasnoyarsk and Barnaul, and a week of good deeds in Novosibirsk, including delivering gifts to needy Jews and making and delivering latkes to lonely homebound seniors are scheduled as well. Jewish youth across the region, participants of JDC s growing Active Jewish Teens youth movement, will lead holiday performances, volunteer efforts aiding poor Jewish families and elderly, and will attend Chanukah themed Shabbat retreats to learn more about the holiday and how they can contribute to local celebrations in their home communities.
