9 9 News of e Peninsula Jewish Community June 2014/5774 Getting to Know You... Meet Neal Rosenbaum: Incoming UJC President He who occupies himself wi e affairs of e community is as one who studies Torah. Talmud Taking part in e life of e Jewish Community was never an option. Parents encourage eir children to participate and excel in many areas; scholastic, sports, drama, dance, but many do not feel e same passion for Jewish religious, social and community activities. My parents, Joan and Donald Rosenbaum, encouraged me to take part. One need only listen to my faer daven (pray and sing) in synagogue for a few moments to get hooked on e feeling. You could almost see e tunes reach up to e Eternal Light on top of e ark. He arrived early for Yom Kippur even ough e seats were reserved. When Rodef Sholom High Holiday services were nearing completion, we moved over to Ada Jeshurun where my moer's family attended. I loved bo services and we always stayed to e end. Every Shabbos morning was Jr. Congregation where Rabbi Finkle taught e Shabbat Shacharit and Musaf services to young boys and girls preparing for e B'nai and B'not Mitzvah. By e time of my Bar Mitzvah I knew every prayer wiout opening e book. Just like a good dancer knows every step of a routine, participation in a Minyan was second nature and, wi e training my parents, Rodef Sholom, Ada Jeshurun and e United Hebrew School provided, I could function in every synagogue in e world. The test came right away after sophomore year in high school. For 7 weeks we traveled on a bus around e US and Canada on USY (United Synagogue You) on Wheels. 'We davened ree services a day in temples large and small, at e rim of e Grand Canyon at sunrise, on an LA beach at sunset and by e side of a road on e outskirts of Las Vegas. Once a child masters e fundamentals of a skill, like tennis of golf, ey can play into old age. The same goes for literacy in e Jewish Community. Prior to senior year at Ferguson High School, my parents sent me to Israel for e first time to test all of my synagogue training during a 7 week USY Israeli Pilgrimage. Based in Jerusalem, our group attended a different Shabbat service every week; Turkish, Yemenite, Chasidic, Moroccan. The tunes were as different as eir pronunciation of Hebrew, but sure enough, I could follow e services and felt at home 6,000 miles away. How does one feel at home wi complete strangers from different countries? My guess is at all of our grandmoers and grandfaers came from e same places, shared e same values and all wanted eir children to become educated, learn a work skill and enjoy a better and easier life an ey had. By e time I was in college, my moer had been president of just about every Jewish women's organization, including Rodef Sholom Sisterhood. My faer holds e record as e longest serving vice president of Rodef Sholom Temple, perennial UJA Campaign Chair of Hampton, when Hampton and Newport News ran separate fund-raising campaigns. Under e well tested eory at e apple does not fall far from e tree is it surprising at I became a synagogue board member in my 20's, a synagogue president, a UJC vice president and UJC annual campaign chair in my 30's and now have e greatest opportunity to serve as president of our UJC? Our tradition teaches at if you are planting a tree and e Messiah arrives, you should first complete e planting of a tree and en go to greet e Messiah. Likewise, planting Jewish seeds wi our children produces sweet, ripe fruit and is lifetime Jewish Agricultural Experiment certainly qualifies me to become a top community banana for e next two years.

10 10 News of e Peninsula Jewish Community June 2014/5774 Annual Meeting Award Presentations Beskin Memorial Scholarship Award Established in 1959 in memory of a beloved and outstanding humanitarian and leader, e Theodore H. and Eser Beskin Memorial Scholarship Award is given annually to a wory local Jewish senior high school student. This year e United Jewish Community is pleased to present e Beskin Award to Clare Levy daughter of Guy and Robin Levy, members of Rodef Sholom Temple and Morgan Jacobs son of Norman and Paige Jacobs, members of Temple Be El. Clare Levy states at as a Sunday school teacher at Rodef Sholom she tries to give her students e same inspiration and passion her teachers gave her when she was growing up in is community. She sees e potential for her students to love Judaism e way she does. She feels strongly in possessing e qualities of leader she is able to lead in bo e Jewish and non-jewish communities. We as a community actually have Clare to ank for Trader Joe s additional orders of challah on Thursday and Friday once she explained e need to her supervisor when she worked ere. Clare is an outstanding young woman and highly qualified to receive is award. She has a 4.10 grade point nd average and is ranked 22 in a class of 373 at Menchville High School. Her letters of recommendation rave about her responsible nature and professional behavior. She steps up to e plate and goes beyond what is expected. National Honor Society, Sunday school teacher, Camp Chaverim counselor, volunteer for HELP week at Rodef Sholom, Menchville High Band member, school newspaper, Spanish Honor Society and e Drama Club. Clare also attended BBYO Panim Institute. Clare will attend Virginia Tech in e fall and we wish her much luck in e future. Morgan Jacobs feels at his experience traveling e United States opened his eyes to e world around him. He states, This was not only wonderful in e sense of seeing landmarks and seeing amazing parts of our country but also very insightful and eye opening for me to see how oer people lived around e country. He was affected by e vast difference seeing mansions of e rich alongside e poor and homeless areas. After traveling to Israel is summer wi e UJC he felt once again when witnessing e amazingly diverse country of Israel. Morgan is a very successful young man and also very qualified to receive is award. He has a 3.74 Grade Point Average and is ranked 40 in a class of 247 at Warhill High School. Bright, dynamic, dedicated to community and peers, ambitious, motivated and having a good sense of himself are just some of e words used in his glowing letters of recommendation. He is very involved wi music at school and in e community. High School Band (marching, concert, jazz and pit), BBYO, National Honor Society, National Social Studies Honor Society, Panim Institute, Hebrew School Tutor, Williamsburg You Orchestra. Morgan will be attending UNC Charlotte in e fall. We wish him e best of luck at school and in e future. Congratulations to Clare and Morgan whose excellence gives em e opportunity to join an impressive list of recipients of e Theodore H. and Eser Beskin Memorial Scholarship. Prepare your mind to receive e best at life has to offer. ~~ Ernest Holmes

11 11 News of e Peninsula Jewish Community June 2014/5774 Emmanuel Greenspon Young Leadership Award This year s Emmanuel Greenspon Young Leadership Award will be presented to Jennifer Meyers at our UJCVP Annual Meeting on June 16. After moving to e Virginia Peninsula nine and a half years ago, Jennifer jumped right into community life as bo a synagogue member and UJCVP employee. Jenn has been a congregational leader bo at Temple Sinai and Emet v Or. She is and has been tireless in her efforts to create strong congregational and spiritual life. Over e years Jenn has held a pleora of volunteer jobs at her congregations including Tot Shabbat coordinator, membership chair, Sisterhood book club chair, ritual committee member, PORT cooking volunteer, and social action chair. In addition, she is simply known to be an overall worker bee whenever a need arises. As e UJCVP Education Assistant, Jenn has considered her job to be much more an at of an administrative assistant and has taken e lead on many outreach activities including Public Space Judaism. She has been an excellent Jewish communal gate keeper representing e entire community as she is often e first point of contact for many community members, especially young adults and young families. Wheer she meets someone at her synagogue, at e UJC, at a public space event, or at her local gym, Jenn always makes sure at people are introduced and invited to e right programs, and are included on all appropriate outreach and community lists. Not only does Jenn attend most community programs wheer as a professional or participant, she always encourages oer to join her; a tireless cheerleader for what we do. In her professional life, Jenn is rarely content to accept a a program wi less an a stellar outcome. Instead of dropping an unsuccessful program Jenn is more likely to evaluate, reink and retool. Giving up is not an option. Jenn goes above and beyond in her enusiasm and commitment. As if ere were actually time left over between work and synagogue, Jenn is currently Ella s girl scout troop treasurer, PTA directory chair, and serves on her neighborhood communications committee. Perhaps her most important role as young Jewish Leader is her commitment to provide an observant Jewish home for her family and e example she and her husband Dave set for eir young daughters Ella and Erin.
