Additionally, the loss of tax revenue led to state and city budget deficits, resulting in serious government reductions to human-service programs. UJA-Federation network agencies lost $50 million in government funding and simultaneously faced a deluge of need, with the demand for core services increasing by 31 percent as compared with last year. Despite daunting challenges, UJA-Federation and its network of agencies were well positioned.years of core operating support for agencies, coupled with a stringent review process and an emphasis on strong management and financial oversight, prepared us to respond to the unexpected. UJA-Federation s ongoing government-relations efforts played a significant role in state and city budget decisions that preserved essential services for the poor and vulnerable.a powerful safety net was in place, as was the ability to leverage our network to facilitate cross-agency collaboration. To help our community weather the storm, UJA-Federation, through its network of agencies, responded to immediate needs and took the lead in creating new initiatives. Sustain In , we granted $28.3 million* to agencies and programs that responded to the economic crisis.thanks to UJA-Federation: $1 million was granted to Met Council on Jewish Poverty as added funding during the year to strengthen its ability to deliver services for lowincome elderly, immigrants, and others coping with poverty.an additional $400,000 in emergency funds was granted to keep food pantries stocked for 33,400 people. 14,000 families received kosher food, 6,000 elderly received home-delivered meals, and 550 families received Passover food just part of the impact of $680,000 in emergency funding to 15 poverty-alleviating programs. 5,100 men and women took part in job fairs, job-placement services, and training through F.E.G.S. Health and Human Services System. 255 people received help averting foreclosures through the New York Legal Assistance Group. *Funding in this area may also appear within the Care, Strength, and Inspiration sections that follow. 5
Innovate With the traditionally poor now joined by middleand upper-income people in the struggle to make ends meet, UJA-Federation devised effective strategies to reach people across the financial spectrum. To help those who may never have needed help before In a bold and decisive response, UJA-Federation together 150 professional and volunteer leaders from UJA-Federation, network agencies, synagogues, days schools, and elsewhere to learn from one another and forge new paths of collaboration. To bring care to where people are Partners in Caring, an initiative that began in 2001, now brings social workers from human-service agencies to provide a wide range of on-site counseling services in close to 150 synagogues.this year, to share information and collaborate to generate savings and revenue-generating opportunities.with theym & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood leading the charge, a number of agencies switched to a more competitive energy provider and lowered their summer electric bills by between 25 percent and 35 percent. To help synagogues deal with financial stresses Lead agencies on UJA-Federation s Connect to Care: F.E.G.S. Health and Human Services System in collaboration with the Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, Jewish Board of Family and Children s Services, Jewish Community Center of Staten Island, Met Council on Jewish Poverty, NewYork Legal Assistance Group, Samuel FieldY, Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center, and Westchester Jewish Community Services drew $6.8 million from its endowment to create many social workers focused on emotional issues Thirty-nine synagogues took part in a fundraising Connect to Care. The program connects agencies related to job loss, as well as helped secure financial symposium that focused on ideas for planned with synagogues to offer a multiservice approach support. giving and inventive ways to raise funds online.a family counseling, employment help, pro bono legal seminar on mergers helped 28 struggling congrega- services, Jewish spiritual care, and more at seven To ensure Jewish education in tough times tions on Long Island explore combining resources. single-stop locations in New York City,Westchester, and Long Island. Even before the recession, 244,000 Jewish New Yorkers were identified as poor. Issues related to aging, mental health, special needs, illness, and more are ongoing, and nobody should shoulder life s challenges alone.that s why UJA-Federation supports caring services for New Yorkers of every religion, ethnicity, and walk of life, and for Jews worldwide. Our work encompasses care at every stage of life and across the financial continuum.through the agencies and programs we fund, we re making sure at-risk children aren t falling between the cracks and the isolated elderly are receiving a hot meal and the nourishment of human interaction.we re easing barriers for people with disabilities and offering comfort and practical support for those facing the end of life.we re helping people in desperate circumstances stem the tide of crisis and, whenever possible, setting them on the path to self-sufficiency. Every act of caring creates a more compassionate community and a better world. Sustain In , we granted $55.8 million to agencies and programs that provide care.with UJA-Federation s support: 168,000 elderly Jews in the former Soviet Union received food, medical services, and homecare. 100,000 frail elderly in New York received such critical services as home care, housing, help accessing entitlements, and more. 44,000 New Yorkers received mental-health services and counseling. 8,000 people affected by autism directly or as family members or caregivers took part in counseling, support groups, and Jewish holiday programs at agencies, Jewish community centers, and synagogues. 2,000 Holocaust survivors in Israel received 17,000 home visits, case management, supportive therapy, and volunteer services. 9
Innovate We continue to look for ways to build on what exists and forge new paths of caring to better serve our community. To build resiliency The Israel Trauma Coalition (ITC), a 60-member organization established and funded by UJA-Federation in 2001 to offer coordinated trauma care, now has more than 200 programs operating throughout Israel. In September 2008, To find meaning in difficult times... Trailblazing the field of Jewish spiritual care in Israel, we supported training programs for social workers, physicians, lay people, and clergy to help some 10,000 people religious and secular cope with illness, bereavement, addiction, and trauma by accessing the reservoir of Jewish resources to find a measure of comfort and hope. To help people help themselves UJA-Federation continued to support the first homes and communities and avoid institutional placement for as long as possible. Based on the single-stop model, the program provides coordinated social work, nursing, legal services, and more on-site or at home. To open doors for people with disabilities We funded the training to teach Westchester synagogue professionals how to make their synagogues more inclusive. From assessing accessibility to examining the friendliness of a congregation to those with special needs, we are helping synagogues Agencies in UJA-Federation s network that provide care include: * Bronx House Jewish Community Center, Camp Oakhurst/New York Service for the Handicapped, DOROT, The Educational Alliance, Hebrew Free Burial Association, Jewish Association for Services for the Aged, Jewish Child Care Association of New York, Jewish Community Center of the Greater Five Towns, Mosholu-Montefiore Community Center, Ramapo for Children, Selfhelp Community Services, and YM-YWHA of Boro Park ITC represented Israel at a United Nations symposium on caring for victims of terror. During the conflict in Gaza, ITC activated its Emergency Israeli model for food co-ops, which provide food at a 25 percent savings to 1,800 families some 7,200 people while empowering individuals and welcome people who face mental, physical, and emotional challenges, and welcome their families too. *We recognize that most agencies in UJA-Federation s network provide care, strength, and inspiration, and we acknowledge their multiple contributions. Despite vast ethnic and religious differences, we share a responsibility for one another and a commitment to the land and people of Israel. UJA-Federation seeks to strengthen these bonds, ensuring that diverse and far-flung Jewish communities feel themselves part of the tapestry of a single people. Sustain In , we granted $36.8 million in support of agencies and programs that provide strength. With UJA-Federation s support: 15,000 people made aliyah and transitioned to new lives in Israel. We find strength in expressing our support for Israel and vehemently protesting against those who would do us and the world harm.when there are Jews in need of rescue, this same strength allows us to act swiftly and effectively, as we have done for more than 90 years. In helping people make aliyah, we recognize that arriving in Israel is only the first leg of the journey. For many immigrants, whether they choose to make a new home in Israel or in NewYork, putting down roots is a communal effort, and UJA-Federation, with its network of agencies, is leading the way to successful integration. We are a source of hope and strength for Jews everywhere. 3,500 Russian émigrés took part in classes and received support to become United States citizens. Tens of thousands of spectators crowded New York s Fifth Avenue to cheer on 25,000 marchers at the Salute to Israel parade, a vocal and colorful display of our support for the land and people of Israel. 10,000 people rallied across the street from the United Nations to protest President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran for expanding Iran s nuclear program, denying the Holocaust, and calling for the destruction of Israel. 10,000 people gathered in front of the Israeli Consulate in NewYork City to support Israel, as part of a rally organized in the days following the conflict in Gaza. 13
Innovate New programs and ventures are reinforcing an ancient truth: we are one people who share a rich and intertwined history and destiny. To help high-risk immigrant teens in Israel stay on the right path UJA-Federation, with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the municipality of Beersheva, and small nonprofits, initiated a citywide Ethiopian-Israeli population under the age of 18 received educational enrichment through Birth to Bagrut, a joint initiative of UJA-Federation and the JDC. To create opportunities for meaningful social action Four hundred college-age young adults took part in 10-day service learning experiences through the Break New Ground initiative, using their school breaks to volunteer in Israel,Appalachia, Central To connect global Jewish communities Seventy Jewish community centers, schools, and synagogues in New York developed relationships with counterparts in Israel, Europe, and Latin America around a shared social-action project, travel together in Israel and New York, or teacher gatherings to explore best practices and original approaches to teaching about Judaism. To reach out to Israeli-Americans Agencies in UJA-Federation s network that provide strength include: The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Edith and Carl Marks Jewish Community House of Bensonhurst, Hebrew Educational Society, Hebrew Free Loan Society, The Jewish Agency for Israel, Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, Kings Bay YM-YWHA, Riverdale YM-YWHA, Sephardic Community Center, and Shorefront YM-YWHA of Brighton-Manhattan Beach initiative in Beersheva to help Israel s Kavkazim, an America, and elsewhere, thanks to UJA-Federation s UJA-Federation funded the first study on Israeli- immigrant group from the Caucasus Mountains support. Experience has taught us what sparks a passion for Jewish life, and also that the road to inspiration is unpredictable. From the traditional to the alternative, UJA-Federation is committed to opening all avenues of Jewish experience and expression. Sustain In , we granted $34.2 million to agencies and programs that provide inspiration. With UJA-Federation s support: 22,000 NewYork children took part in day and residential summer camp experiences. We re working together with synagogues to create caring and dynamic centers of Jewish engagement. We re strengthening Jewish day schools, developing Jewish leaders, and making it possible for young people around the world to attend Jewish summer camps and participate in Israel experiences.to reach more people on their terms, we re supporting timehonored institutions while also exploring fresh and original modes of inspiration. Our investment is significant, for what s at stake is nothing less than the creation of a vibrant Jewish community today and for generations to come. 13,000 children in the former Soviet Union received Jewish education at 104 Sunday schools and 43 Jewish day schools. 6,000 young adults from New York traveled on a free trip to Israel through Taglit-Birthright Israel, part of the 200,000 who have participated from 52 countries worldwide. 2,500 educators in Israel were taught how to bring Jewish identity teachings into the classroom, reaching an estimated 50,000 students. 275 synagogues, representing more than half of the New York area s synagogues, were strengthened through projects ranging from leadership development to Jewish learning for all ages. 17
Innovate In our ever-evolving quest to inspire a passion for Jewish life and learning, we are exploring new ways to reach people on their terms. To make Jewish summer camp as appealing as possible Thanks to UJA-Federation s support, more than 800 children who had never before attended Jewish summer camp, or had attended only once before, received scholarship incentives to choose Jewish otherwise by supporting alternative events and programs in all five boroughs, Long Island, and Westchester; 45 communities in Israel; and six communities in the former Soviet Union. Programs ranged from environmental-themed bike rides to High Holiday concerts to events in museums, bars, and publishing houses. To reach Israelis with Jewish programming in nontraditional places Approximately 400,000 Israelis participated in Jewish-themed activities and holiday celebrations at To build Jewish community from the ground up UJA-Federation supported a grants competition, awarding funding to 12 initiatives led by entrepreneurial thinkers in the former Soviet Union. The initiatives aim to promote Jewish cultural traditions, encourage social action, develop leadership, and strengthen informal Jewish education. Agencies in UJA-Federation s network that provide inspiration include: Barry and Florence Friedberg Jewish Community Center, Berkshire Hills-Emanuel Camps, BJENY- SAJES, Foundation for Jewish Culture, Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life,The Jewish Community Center in Manhattan, Jewish Education Service of North America, Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center, 92nd Street Y, Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, Surprise Lake Camp, and Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts sleepaway camps over secular alternatives, an almost community centers, made possible because of our 50 percent increase in the number of campers aided support of the Israel Association of Community as compared with last summer. The sum of all campaigns was an impressive $215.3 million: $136 million for the 2009 Annual Campaign; $60.4 million for Planned Giving & Endowments; and $18.8 million for Capital Gifts & Special Initiatives. Fundraising events, especially for our Wall Street and real estate divisions, were a means for people to gather together and draw strength from one another. At some events, like at our General Insurance Dinner, attendance far surpassed that of previous years. Instead of canceling events, we reached out to those who can to give for those who were unable and the community responded. Donors at our annual Wall Street dinner made it possible for 50 unemployed Wall Streeters and 50 business-school students to attend.the room was filled with 1,100 men and women who defied expectations by their very presence and upheld a 40-year tradition of modeling philanthropic leadership. In addition, a volunteer initiative, wall Street Cares, provided members of the financial community with the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and put on their dancing shoes at UJA-Federation beneficiary agencies, accompanied by a prominent Wall Street leader.whether waltzing with seniors at the Jewish Home Lifecare Roseland Dance or just mingling with clients at the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged, it was a chance for Wall Streeters to feel good about giving back. With fewer people able to give at the same level, top leadership motivated donors to dig deeper by pooling resources to create a challenge fund, helping raise $4.2 million from current donors who increased their gifts by 10 percent or more, and an additional $3.3 million from new donors. Donors who wanted to go beyond their annual campaign commitments and ensure the Jewish future made gifts to agency capital projects through UJA-Federation, as well as to special initiatives developed with the help of UJA-Federation, such as Birth to Bagrut in Israel and our Autism Initiative in New York. New opportunities this year include the New York Day School Endowment and the UJA-Federation Archive Project. Those who wished to create a powerful legacy secured their gift through planned giving and endowments.the critical importance of 21
