The Conclave is hosted by Scoutmaster Howard Spielman s Troop 54, chartered in Brookline, MA. Dr. Spielman has run this program since its inception, 30 years ago. As in past years, able support is being offered by Troop 54 s Troop Committee, including Rabbi Avraham A. Witty from Toronto, Canada (16 years!), & Mrs. Pesha Tanny from Montréal, Québec (13 years!). q WHEN: 1:00 PM Sunday, December 25, 2016 to 2:00 PM Wednesday December 28, Four days and three nights using the school as base-camp. q WHERE: Maimonides School in Brookline, MA This year we are camping-out in the Maimonides School. While individual boys and adults may have many different personal perspectives on prayer, as a community our Conclave will gather as one. q TRANSPORTATION: Scouts from each Troop make individual travel/car-pool arrangements. See your Scoutmaster for details. q WHY: For Scout Advancement, work towards religious awards, & great fellowship. Webelos Scouts work on Advancement to Arrow of Light. 5 WINTER CAMPING TREK IN MAINE: 2 OPTIONS With the Pine Tree Council in Maine we ve created a special Shomer Shabbat Winter Survival Skills and Okpik. Our special versions, after the Conclave Wed. Dec. 28, through Fri. afternoon Dec. 30, 2016, have kosher food, and time for Tefila, and spend Shabbat in Boston. Both programs have some similar components. The Okpik program spends more time building a snow shelter, preparing to sleep out in one, and doing it! Winter Survival Skills will have time for rifle shooting and biathlon, and will sleep indoors. 1. Winter Survival Skills Training: Includes XC Skiing, Snowshoeing, Rifle Shooting, & Biathlon (combine skiing & shooting). Sleep indoors in a heated cabin. For Scouts age 11 through 18 (No Rank requirement). Designed for boys not old enough to sleep in the snow, but eager for a winter backwoods experience. This will give you loads of bang for your buck, and plenty of skills as well! 2. OKPIK (ook pick) Is the Inuit Eskimo name for the Snowy Owl and also the name and symbol of the official Boy Scouts of America cold weather camping program. For Scouts age 13+, First Class (or close), & 100 lbs+. Completing the Okpik program, you have an exhilarating highadventure experience, and earn a special Maine Okpik patch: Before leaving the Conclave, you ll meet as a crew and organize your food and group gear. Leave the Conclave right after lunch and Mincha on Wed. Arrive at Camp Hinds in Raymond, Maine around dusk. Wednesday night: Sleep in a heated building. Okpik staff checks out your winter clothing/gear and gives you a checklist of what you need to borrow from their massive inventory. Participate in an excellent training session on Winter Camping and Cold Weather First Aid. Thursday morning: After Shacharit, borrow EVERYTHING you need for Winter Camping from OKPIK supplies. (All you re required to bring is two pair of thermal underwear.) Then, pack out on cross-country skis or snowshoes heading out into the back-country. The Okpik program will supply all of our equipment sleds (for the kosher pots and food we will bring), skis, snowshoes, and other cold weather camping gear. They also send along a trained guide with emergency radio communications. Learn to build your own quinzee or thermal shelter (snow cave) out of snow and natural materials. Sleep in it Thursday night! (The temperature inside a quinzee can be well above freezing even when the outside temperature is as low as minus-40 F.!) (In February 2014, Troop 54 slept in 3' of snow with the temperature at minus-20 F.!) Friday, after Shacharit, a hearty hot breakfast in the back-country, and more fun in the snow, ski/snowshoe back to base camp, to head home after noon to Boston, about 2-hours.away, where Scouts from out-of-town will have Shabbat Home Hospitality. Cost for either program is: Scouts: $140 Adults: $70 Other requirements: We need to supply at least two adults and, before we head out, ALL participants need a summer-camp-type Medical Form, with a doctor s signature dated anytime in (A copy of last summer s camp Medical is fine.) NOW, sign-up by December 18! The folks in Maine must confirm staff. To sign-up for either program, go to: tinyurl.com/tjsconclave Click the OKPIK WINTER WINTER SURVIVAL SKILLS button Page 5 of 6
