(1 hr) Parsha Points to Ponder Suggested answers 1) The Chatam Sofer teaches that IN THEIR MIDST means that Pinchas expressed the zealous- ness which was in the hearts of the Jewish people. They lacked the courage to take action but they all knew that something had to be done once a Jewish prince was sinning openly with a Midianite woman. The verse ends by saying AND I DID NOT DESTROY THE JEWISH PEOPLE. This was because Pinchas uncovered the positive that was inside of all of them, and therefore, this word BITOCHAM actually captures the main reason why more people didn't die. 2) The Meshech Chochma explains that the BECAUSE comes to answer why the tribe of Levi was so small compared to the rest of the tribes and didn't even grow during their time in the desert. This was BECAUSE they were not considered to be part of the rest of Israel and were not given their own inheritance in the land of Israel. They needed to be small to fit on the few open lands that were provided for them and to enable the rest of the nation to support them. 3) Rabbeinu Bachya answers that this comes to hint to the fact that this was the day that the Torah was given (something the Torah does not say outright about Shavuot) as captured by the fact that they were not in need of sin offering since they were like newborns, starting fresh without sin when the Torah was given. 5 vigilantly avoid permitting those justified behaviors to affect who we are and how we really feel. We must struggle to retain our humanity, gentleness, and compassion, even when our outer behavior necessitates firmness, and even severity. What does one have to do with the other? 3) Why doesn't the Torah say that the goat for the holiday of Shavuot is FOR A SIN OFFERING (28:26) as it does for the goat offered on the other holidays (SE'IR LA'CHATAT)?
