And once as LUCHOT HABRIT, the Tablets of the Covenant. Spelling of LUCHOT varies, too. [2] Between consecutive verses is heard all of Torah and a big chunk of Nach Between VAYHI BINSO'A HAARON... which we say when we take out the Torah, and UVNUCHO YOMAR... which we say when we put away the Torah, we hear all of Torah (in the course of a year) and that part of Nevi'im that we read for the haftara. \ OLD BUSINESS Last week, there was an article on the status of the Passion Fruit a.k.a. Adapted from Malachim Kivnei Adam by Simcha Raz, pp , 230 And [the spies] began to speak badly about the land that they had explored. (Bamidbar 13:32) A dispirited discussion took place at Beit HaRav, Rav Kook s house in Jerusalem, not long after the end of World War II. The Chief Rabbi had passed away ten years earlier; now it was his son, Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda Kook, who sat at the head of the table. One participant at the Shabbat table had brought up a disturbing topic: the phenomenon of visitors touring Eretz Yisrael and then criticizing the country after returning to their homes. These visitors complain about everything: the heat, the poverty, the backwardness, the political situation - and discourage other Jews from moving here, he lamented. Rav Tzvi Yehuda responded by telling over the following parable, one he had heard in the name of Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever, the rabbi of Bialystok. 13 The Sfas Emes explains that, indeed, the project started as a bad idea. But once HaShem went along with it, and issued a command to send the spies, the situation was transformed. Bnei Yisroel could have saved the day (and themselves!) if they had changed their mind-set, rejecting their own initial (ill-conceived) motives for sending the spies, and adopting instead the motive of desiring to carry out HaShem's command. That is, the same spies could have been sent, with the very same instructions. But by conceptualizing differently what they were doing - i.e., viewing their mission as fulfilling HaShem's wish - the whole episode could have been transformed. "All the people that we saw in the land were men of great stature"; with these words the meraglim described the inhabitants of Eretz Yisrael. They were remnants of the Nefillim who were destroyed by the Flood everywhere else but remained alive here as Eretz Yisrael was spared that destruction (Zevachim 113a). Perhaps the Gemara was also explaining the extra-ordinary size of the fruits that the meraglim brought. (Harav S. R. Hirsch). It is no accident that the fruit of Eretz Yisrael figures so prominently in the story of the meraglim. For that matter, so do fruits and indeed all sorts of other foods. The Torah describes this country as flowing with milk and honey. "Honey has its source in the body of an impure creature and milk is forbidden to us when mixed with meat.
