6 All human societies contain the tension between the pressure to conform and the inner urge to be distinctive. Religious societies contain that tension all the more. Judaism, for example, requires conformity to an elaborate set of behavioral guidelines. The casual observer of a group of Jews at prayer, or at the Pesach Seder table, or circling the bima with their Lulav & Etrog during the holiday of Sukkot, will see a group of people who seem to be obsessively imitating each other. But the observer who is familiar with the inner lives of those who comprise that group of Jews will realize that each person's prayer is different and reflective of his or her unique experience. Everyone around the Seder table is responding to different religious memories, and each of those who are circling the bima is doing so with a very distinctive and unique set of religious emotions. If there is a lesson to be gained from this perspective of our parsha, it is this: Religious behavior calls for a great deal of uniformity, but also insists that each individual draw from his or her own wellspring of inspiration. We all must be the same, yet we all must be different. This paradox is true of all human societies. It is especially true of the society of Jews. OU Israel Center TT 1276 page 35 à NASO 5778

Last week's portion described Kehat's duties EILEH MASA V'NEI KEHAT B'OHEL MO'ED - the above is what Kehat must carry" (4:15) and this week's portion details the duties of Gershon and Merari. The words we see repeated relating to the tasks of their special postition are AVODA - work, MASA - carrying, LISHMOR MISHMERET. Without the Holy Temple the Leviyim don't have much special to do nowadays besides being called up second for an Aliya and washing the hands for the kohanim. Moshe blessed the Leviyim that they should "teach your law to Yaakov, and your Torah to Israel" (D'varim 33:10) and some say that anyone who is a teacher today is in a sense doing the job of the Leviyim. And since we are in the 70th year of Israel, Dr Zvi Zameret spoke at the graduation about 70 years of education in Israel. He pointed out that people like to criticize the Israeli education system, but really we should be looking at our accomplishments. We started this country as a mix of immigrants from various parts of the world - who didn't even speak Hebrew and who couldn't communicate properly with each other. Instead of comparing our educational achievements to other third world countries, we are compared now to the OECD. That alone is an accomplishment in just 70 years.
