SCHOOL NEWS Mural Dedication in Memory of Emanuel Frankel z''l This morning, the entire SAR community gathered on the field to dedicate the SAR mural that was designed by SAR parent Donna Salamon and created by our students and volunteers with Donna's guidance last year. We were joined by the Raice Family to honor the memory of their father and grandfather, Emanuel Frankel z"l. Mr. Frankel was a man who lived his life following the pasuk, V'Asita Hayashar v'hatov b'einei Hashem which was our theme of the year last year. Following his passing, his family found a video of him speaking about the importance of living your life by that mantra. To learn important lessons about life from Mr. Frankel, each class watched this video and discussed who he was and how he lived his life. During the program, we were honored to hear from Rabbi Krauss and from Deborah Raice Fox, daughter of Emanuel Frankel z"l, and mother of teacher Ayala Raice and former teacher Batya Sharbat. She spoke to our students and faculty about carrying her father's message to the world. We also had the zechut to learn from Rabbi Avi Weiss, and at the end of this meaningful program, we sang the Theme song from last year. Annual PTC Book Fair The Annual PTC Book Fair began on Tuesday and ends Sunday, November 20th! Share the gift of reading by donating to the Bergen County Toy Drive. Add $1 to your purchase, which will go toward purchasing books for those in need (including children of Ohel, Yachad, and Chai Lifeline). Also, please do not forget to look at your teacher wish lists and contribute to classroom libraries! There is one more day, so remember to stop by the Book Fair in the atrium on Sunday! 2/10
3 11/18/2016 SAR Academy: Koleinu V4 Chesed Tent Projects Just as the tent of Avraham and Sarah was open on all sides so that everyone could be welcomed, SAR's very own Chesed Tent has been open to students this entire week! In this year's chesed tent, we brought Yerushalayim to SAR by incorporating this year's Yerushalayim at 50 theme with "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav" decorations and with a particular focus, in some grades, on acts of kindness that we can perform for people living in Yerushalayim. All of our grades have visited the tent to complete the following chesed projects: ELC 2N decorated bookmarks for the Survivor Mitzvah Project ELC 3N/4N decorated meal towels to be given to Beit Issie Shapiro ELC K made decorations and center pieces for the Bronx Jewish Community Council Chanukah Gala "Dreidel Ball" 1st grade packed sandwiches for a soup kitchen 2nd grade decorated mezuzot boxes to be given to Friends of the IDF 3rd grade made "Build a Bears" to be given to Shaare Tzedek Pediatric Ward 4th grade made name signs for Amit Beit Hayeled 5th grade stuffed "Socks for Soldiers" for MSAWI 6th grade baked cookies to be given to hospitals, fire stations and police stations 7th grade packed tzeddakah boxes for Yachad 8th grade put together flower arrangements to be sold for Sharsheret 3/10

This tent is meant to portray the tent of Avraham and Sarah. Because Avraham and Sarah were chesed oriented people and were always looking to do good deeds, so to this tent became an arena for the entire school to visit and do acts of chesed. K3 visited the tent on Monday and were greeted by Niti Minkove, the director of social services at BJCCS. She explained to the children that elderly people don't get to go to as many parties as they do. In fact, they don't get out very often at all. With that in mind, the children began making a decorative welcome sign for the "Dreidle Ball", the Chanukah party that over 70 elderly people attend! In addition, K3 went back to the tent on Friday to be greeted by SAR's own Avraham and Sarah! What amazing experiences we had in the tent this week. 4/10
5 11/18/2016 SAR Academy: Koleinu V4 THIS WEEK IN THE LOWER SCHOOL 1st Grade Learns about Mitzvot As preparation for Parshat Vayera, Kita Alef learned about הכנסת אורחים and the importance of doing Mitzvot. We prepared sandwiches and bags of food for a soup kitchen. We enjoyed listening to the story "Bagels for Benny" and we were very excited to stand in the tent just like Avraham and Sara. We hope to learn from them and do many good deeds in the future. 5th Grade Melave Malka The fifth grade Melave Malka was a huge success this past Motzei Shabbat! Fifth graders and their parents joined together to celebrate the beginning of learning Torah She beal Peh. The students learned, heard divrei Torah from their classmates, ate delicious food, and danced. The fifth graders put a lot of work into the evening. The students spent an afternoon last week studying the timeline of Torah She beal Peh. They then created chains, which were on display in the gym. The chains represented the chain of tradition from the Tanach, through the Tanaaim, Amoraim, Rishonim, Achronim, the students' grandparents, parents, and the students themselves. Moreover, the students researched their own names and created beautiful projects and frames, which were also displayed at the Melave Malka. Thank you to Morah Adiella for her tireless efforts in helping the fifth graders create such beautiful projects. We hope to continue the learning of Torah with the same enthusiasm that was felt on Saturday night! 5th Graders Give Back This week, for Parshat Vayera, the fifth grade students learned about the importance of Chesed. When visiting SAR s famous Chesed Tent, the students had an opportunity to take part in an important act of giving through the organization MSAWI (Major Stuart Adam Wolfer Institute). Each student was able to pack a pair of warm socks to keep the U.S. troops nice and comfortable. Along with the warm socks, they included calling cards, candy, and toothbrushes. Most importantly, the fifth grade students wrote warm letters expressing their gratitude for keeping our country safe. A particular powerful point was learning about the importance of mundane items like socks, in the day to day life of a solider. The fifth graders felt a new appreciation for having various pairs of socks at home, and were excited to be part of such a wonderful organization. 5/10
6 11/18/2016 SAR Academy: Koleinu V4 THIS WEEK IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SAR Hosts MS Debate On Thursday, SAR hosted the Middle School Debate! SAR, Yeshivah of Flatbush, North Shore Hebrew Academy, and Yavneh Academy participated. All of the teams did a wonderful job, arguing issues on crime, border patrol, and historical evidence. Congratulations to Yavneh Academy for winning this debate. Generations of Israel This week, a delegation of students from Tel Aviv University via the organization Generations of Israel visited SAR to teach our Middle School students about different aspects of life in Israel. Each small group met with two of our Israeli visitors to learn about topics such as the IDF, the geography of Israel, music and cuisine in Israel, the legacy of Shimon Peres, z l, and more! We very much enjoyed further connecting to Israel s culture and history with our guests. STEM CORNER Dash and Dot Robots A group of fourth grade SAR Academy students has formed a team to compete in the National Wonder League Robotics Competition. This self selected team works with Morah Rivka Heisler after school on Wednesdays, navigating the Dash and Dot robots to complete a series of challenges using the Wonder App. The theme for this year's competition is "Animal Habitat Rescue" and the challenges involve writing code to help navigate dash around the island to save various animal habitats. Examples include planning how to program Dash to circle the baby bunny to establish a conservation area as well as to push garbage away from Dot, the pregnant sea turtle. 6/10
7 11/18/2016 SAR Academy: Koleinu V4 As the challenges have gotten increasingly complicated, students have had to write algorithms with decision trees in order to program successfully. Here is a video of Dash detecting Dot and circling her 3 times. Engineering Waterworks Clusters After covering most of the theoretic background for our engineering waterworks project (including the concepts of force, work and energy), we learned about the engineering project design structure (beginning with setting the goal, understanding what we are going to build, planning, designing and drawing our plan, and building the product according to a set of instructions). We implemented those stages through a simple project, a little rubber band shooter, that we planned, built and tested during today's session. The image to the right illustrates the testing stage of our rubber band shooter after building it. We also used our theoretic background to investigate the concepts of potential and kinetic energy. In our next session, we are going to begin with the actual waterwheel engineering planning and design. Then, we will build and test our product! SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS SAR Victories! On Monday night, the 8th grade boys defeated YCQ, 61 17, at the Swish for Sderot Basketball Tournament. On Tuesday night, the 8th grade boys basketball team defeated BPY, Also on Tuesday night, the 7th & 8th grade girls basketball team defeated MDS, Go Sting! DVAR TORAH Parshat Vayera By Yonatan Schwartz, 4th Grade In the beginning of this week's parsha, Avraham sits at the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day. He is still sick from his Brit Milah. Why does Avraham sit at the opening of his tent during the hottest part of the day when he's still not feeling well? Rashi says that Avraham did this so he could see if there were any people walking by, to welcome them into his tent. Avraham wanted to do the Mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim, even though he wasn't feeling well. Avraham got to do this Mitzvah when he saw three people (but they were really angels!) walking by. We can learn from Avraham to do Hachnasat Orchim and all mitzvot even when we're not feeling so well. It's important to do mitzvot whether we're in a good mood or in a bad mood. When your family has a guest 7/10
8 11/18/2016 SAR Academy: Koleinu V4 to do mitzvot whether we're in a good mood or in a bad mood. When your family has a guest over, you can offer them a drink, something to eat, and talk with them to make them feel welcome. This is one way we can try to be like Avraham.
