Chadashot -TEST To: Sylvia Burian Fri, Jan 6, 2012 at 8:54 AM Condolences To Steven Siegel and Laura Rabinowitz on the passing of their beloved father, Rabbi Stanley Z. (Schneur Zalman) Siegel. To Ilene Strauss (AC Faculty) on the passing of her beloved father, Carl Strauss. the same time, we emphasize the responsibility of being part of a community, and the value of not "separating yourself from your community". How do we deal with these ideas which at times compete with each other? When is it appropriate to compromise one's individual ambitions for the sake of the "tzibbur"? How do we allow for many individual voices to be heard and valued, while not compromising the unity of the "tzibbur"? What do we do if we are not comfortable with something that the "tzibbur" is doing? As we focus on the needs of the community, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage each of you to participate generously in our annual fundraising drive for this year's SAR dinner, in order to honor a few very worthy individuals, and to ensure that EVERY member of our community is given the benefit of a quality Jewish education. Thank you and Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Binyamin Krauss QUESTION OF THE WEEK: This week Bereishit ends and we prepare to start Sefer Shemot. What are your hopes for a new beginning, returning to school after vacation? January 6, Tevet 5772 Parshat Vayechi Candle Lighting: 4:24pm Havdallah: 5:28pm (see quotes throughout) Click here for a pdf version of Chadashot I want to get more sleep so I can have better concentration during davening." Mazal Tov A Message from Rabbi Krauss - Hannah Siegel 8X To Penina Mazurek (ELC K1 teacher) and her husband Menashe on the birth of their daughter, Yocheved. Dear Parents, This week's Parsha, which concludes Sefer Bereishit, serves as the transition from the stories of individuals, the avot, to the story of a community, and the birth of Am Yisrael. I would encourage you to take some time at your Shabbat tables to discuss the role of the individual and the role of the community. We encourage people to follow their individual passions, and cultivate their unique talents and abilities. At Academy News And justice for all.
both the Hebrew and English departments focusing on this year's theme of Arvut/Connections. "Blood & Guts: What's Inside? Medical Discovery Lab" Today, as a culminating project in the Enrichment Cluster, "Blood & Guts: What's Inside? Medical Discovery Lab" our young medical explorers brought the knowledge they acquired and put it to practical use by creating first aid kits for various locations in the school. Kol hakavod on providing this special product for our school and thank you to the facilitators: Dr. Amy Ciner, Dr. Jennifer Fenster, and Dr. Yardaena Osband! Aaron Steinberg's Social Justice Enrichment Cluster explored different ways that the four students could change the world in just 9 weeks. After much deliberation, the boys determined that Animal Rights was a passion they all had in common. After learning about what role animal shelters play in our community, a fundraiser was launched to help the Yonkers Animal Shelter build a new state-of-the-art facility. Weeks of selling Hershey's Kisses brought in over $78! To culminate the experience, the group visited the Yonkers animal shelter for a tour of the facility, a loud (and sometimes scary) walk through the dog room, and some adorable petting in the cat room. At the end of the tour, the boys presented the shelter manager with their donation to the facility. The Riverdale Press visits SAR Connecting all of the Pieces The second grade continued to learn about their neighborhood and have been focused on the people, places and services which make up a community. On December 21 st, the second grade was visited by Nikki Dowling, associate editor and education reporter at The Riverdale Press, a local newspaper. Ms. Dowling explained how to write an article, discussed different parts of the newspaper and showed the students pictures of the newsroom. The students listened intently and were eager to ask questions about reporters, editors and life in the newsroom. They were especially interested in how photographers know what pictures to take and if reporters write stories for the photos or vice versa. Ms. Dowling was clearly impressed with the student s desire to learn and all of the amazing questions they had. The fifth grade has been busy creating and decorating individual puzzle pieces which will eventually be pieced together as a symbol of Arvut. The SAR Art program is connected to the school s curriculum in
Each year the children artistically decorate and inscribe many cards to Chayalim to say thank you for their service to the people and Land of Israel. The toughest of soldiers has been truly touched when receiving one of these cards, and the children develop a sense of appreciation for the brave and hard working soldiers in our beloved Eretz Yisrael - truly a win-win situation! JHS - Asarah B Tevet Learning 58% percent of you probably aren t sure what Asarah B Tevet is all about, said Rabbi Rosenberg Let s learn and see what we can find out. And so began the Junior High School cross-grade chevruta learning program. Asarah B Tevet is the day on which the siege of Jerusalem began and was the beginning of the chain of events which ended with the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash on Tisha B Av. Another special project began during the Intifada. In an attempt to have the children of K3 make a real and meaningful difference to the hurting people of Israel, they began designing and decorating individual wall hangings to send to hospitals there. Each one said Refuah Shleimah in Hebrew, and was uniquely created by a child with teacher guidance. At the end of the year, all were taken or sent to a hospital where they were hung in patients rooms, along with a message from the children. Since that time, that Chesed project has continued each year, sending over 200 hangings since it began, and always to a different hospital - from Yerushalayim to Rechovot, from Tel Aviv to Kfar Saba, from Nahariya to Beer Sheva. The students are just beginning a new cycle, and have selected a colorful fabric which has been cut and hemmed. They decide one of 6 ways to have the Hebrew Refuah Shleimah letters traced onto the fabric, and choose from templates of luchot, hamsas, magen davids, and doves to be outlined. They then have the option of sewing and gluing beads, sequins, ribbon, shells, pom-poms, buttons or jewels around each shape. The process begins in class, and then parents are invited individually or in pairs to come and work with the child to finish his/her project. The parent puts the final touches on with glitter glue, and then shares with the class some special experience s/he has had in Israel. Each visit is so special, and adds to the children s understanding of various aspects of our country across the world. Below are some beautiful photos of last year's finished projects. The 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades were divided up into small groups and learned about the significance of the day. What happened on Asarah B Tevet?, What is the larger implication to the Jewish people?, Why do we fast? All of these questions were addressed and discussed in the hope that the events of Asarah B Tevet would take on new meaning for our students and they could better understand the importance of the day. For the past few years, with the guidance of Morah Rita Rivka Lewy the children spearheaded a collection of used soft toys, which are sent to Israeli institutions under the auspices of Bears from Bergenfield. As the school-wide donations arrive, they are counted before being sent to Israel. The new number of arrivals are added to the last number, and one or two children with a highly developed math sense can actually calculate this in their heads! The teachers keep lists of 100 numbers on their door, circling each new number to reflect toys that come in. This year they are already approaching 400! The hope is to rival the record from the past of almost 1,000! Please canvas everyone you know, as this is a wonderful way to recycle toys that are no longer needed, and to send them to children who will love them! "Olam Chesed Yibaneh" - "The world is built on kindness" (Click here to see flyer) Daily Chesed in the ELC While chesed is constantly modeled and woven daily into the ELC curriculum, the teachers have also developed some special ways to strengthen this midah into our children.
I hope to go on more trips Avi Turok 3Z The This children week put in their Sports all into making theirs as beautiful a project as possible, knowing full well that they will be giving it away for the benefit of others in Israel. This is chesed and arvut at its best! The SAR Hockey Team defeated RYNJ 5-2 last night, with goals by Sam Soff, Jason Burian, Solomon Bergwerk and Jonathan Lederman and a strong game by goalie Jonah Amron. The 7 th grade boy's basketball team lost to North Shore in an overtime nail biter, It's That "Kind" of Week 7th grade basketball game dedicated to first grader Neshama Ryman and Chai Lifeline! This Saturday night, January 7 th, the seventh grade boy s basketball team will be dedicating their game against HALB to first grader Neshama Ryman and the Chai Lifeline Organization. Chai Lifeline has been supporting Neshama and her family throughout her struggle with cancer. There will be a short program/presentation at 7:45pm and game will begin at 8:15pm. I want to learn more math in this part of the year. I go to Morah Sharon s math class because I like math a lot. Noah Grosberg 1Y Picture of the Week When asked why they thought to run this event the students said, Neshama and the Ryman family continue to inspire us all and we would like to show our support and gratitude. The students made posters and decorated a huge banner to be displayed at the game. Neshama and her family spoke to the 7 th grade and thanked them for their efforts on her behalf.
Pasrshat Vayechi - By the children of K-4 Kol Hakavod to the event coordinators: Amichai Zieler Feit, Erez Major, Hank Stein, Dovie Marcus, Rebecca Perla and Sophie Hecht! To make a donation to Chai Lifeline click on this link: In discussing this week s parsha, Parshat Vayechi, the children in K-4 learned about the unique brachot (blessings) Yaakov gave to all of his sons. Special emphasis was put on the bracha HaMalach Hagoel, the blessing Yaakov gave to his grandsons Efraim and Menashe. Many parents bestow this bracha on their children on Friday night at the Shabbat table. In keeping with the theme of Arvut, Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh Lazeh we emphasized the fact that Yaacov gave each child a blessing, based on each child's individual strengths and weaknesses. Ahavat Yisrael (Yaakov) means that each one of us, despite our differences, is a member in good standing and deserves blessings (brachot). We will study tractate Brachot in a way designed to be accessible to learners at all levels, including beginners. This is the first of several such evenings planned for CSAIR, in cooperation with SAR and Young Israel Ohab Zedek, is engaged in a year-long project to complete the study of the entire Mishna in anticipation of Matt's first yahrzeit, 18 Av 5772/August 6, Mishnah Study Program in Memory of Matt Fenster z"l Matt was committed to an inclusive vision of Jewish learning and worked to promote Jewish textual literacy. As an adult, he worked hard to acquire the skills necessary to study Mishnah and other Jewish texts independently and in Chavruta (with a study partner). To honor his memory, the SAR Academy, Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale, and Young Israel Ohab Zedek communities will join together to complete the study of the entire Mishnah in time for Matt's first Yahrzeit on August 6, 2012 (18th of Av). Consistent with Matt's inclusive vision, we encourage widespread participation from learners at all levels. Please sign up on the linked google-doc -- on your own or with a group of others -- to take responsibility for learning a tractate of Mishnah in time for the Yahrzeit. If you need help with your learning, please indicate on the spreadsheet, and we'll connect you with someone who can help. Along the way to the Yahrzeit, there will be classes and other learning programs connected to this project. The focus of the communal learning programs will be the tractate of Brakhot. So, if you have no prior experience studying Mishnah, you should still feel welcome to sign up to study Brakhot, as there will be opportunities to study this tractate at community-wide programs. Thank you for your commitment to this project. We look forward to strengthening the bonds of our community through this learning project dedicated to Matt's memory.
