2 Palm Beach Synagogue In January 1994, a small group of dedicated people started holding traditional Shabbat services at Temple Emanuel, in Palm Beach. This gathering was transformed into a community with the arrival of Rabbi Moshe and Rebbetzin Dinie Scheiner. From its humble beginnings, Palm Beach Synagogue has blossomed into a flourishing center of Jewish life and activity with approximately 300 members. Palm Beach Synagogue prides itself on being a place of warm welcome for Jews from all walks of life and all levels of Jewish observance, while maintaining its abiding adherence to traditional Jewish law and observance of mitzvot. With its inviting spirit, our Synagogue is a place where people are committed to the love and support of our fellow Jews, religious traditions, the community at large, and the State of Israel. Today, the Synagogue is housed in a beautifully renovated edifice, in the heart of Palm Beach Island, two blocks north of the Breakers Hotel. It is a center for traditional Jewish life and education for adults, teens and children. The Synagogue offers unique programs in Jewish education and communal life, numerous youth activities, holiday celebrations, daily morning and afternoon/evening minyanim and weekly Shabbat as well as holiday services. In the summer of 2011, the Synagogue entered the last phase of its recent building renovations and the entire east façade on North County Road was transformed into a unified exterior keeping with the existing architecture. This past year, Palm Beach Synagogue celebrated its Chai anniversary, and we are grateful to have experienced the phenomenal growth of our Synagogue from its inception as a small minyan to its current vibrancy and dynamism. Today, we are blessed to be a spiritual home to a broad community of families and adults of different backgrounds and affiliations, all seeking to deepen their connection to Hashem and their understanding of Torah. Palm Beach Synagogue is a synagogue filled with warmth and friendship, as well as intellectual, emotional and spiritual fulfillment. Our Synagogue has a dazzling array of programs to offer which reflect the diversity of our community and the many different ways that individuals access the beauty and meaning of Torah. There are adult beginner and advanced courses, children s and teen education, holiday celebrations, a book club, cantorial and musical events, a film festival, women s events, guest lecturers, a mission to Israel, singles programs, as well as Chesed and volunteering opportunities. I invite you to participate in these programs and help us continue building our community. Traditionally, a Synagogue has been referred to by two names, a beit ha kneset, a house of gathering and a beit ha medrash, a house of learning. Our Synagogue exemplifies an amalgam of both concepts. We are a community lighthouse which draws together people traveling from different directions but gathering around the warm light of Torah. The Torah is our beacon that has guided us and kept us together as a nation for thousands of years, while our synagogues served as the portable homeland of the Jewish people. The keys to P.B.S. 4 Dear Fellow Members and Friends, The Program Guide for 5773 exemplifies the philosophy of Palm Beach Synagogue as a center for Judaism that is welcoming, dedicated to Jewish values and traditions, and spiritually inspiring. Under the leadership of our beloved Rabbi Moshe Scheiner, we open our doors and hearts to those who want to pray together and become part of our community. We welcome all adults, teens, children, newcomers, seniors and singles and offer opportunities for social connection, and spiritual and intellectual growth. We are very proud to boast that we are the only synagogue in Palm Beach that conducts morning, afternoon and evening services every day of the year. As you peruse this Program Guide, you will find a full range of programs for the coming year. Our adult education classes provide stimulating classes in Bible, Talmud, Jewish law and customs, Hebrew language and Yiddish, and there are programs in arts and culture, including our Jewish film series, book club and current affairs roundtable. We have assembled a wide spectrum of guest lecturers and Scholars-in-Residence who will enrich our knowledge of Torah, and deepen our understanding of issues of interest to the Jewish community and the State of Israel. Our women s programs, under the guidance of our wonderful Rebbetzin Dinie, are guaranteed to motivate and strengthen our knowledge and bonds of friendship. We trust that our prayer services will be elevated through the voices of our visiting cantors, and that you will enjoy our celebratory events associated with the Jewish holidays. There is also a full array of special programs and educational opportunities for our children and youth. We look forward to serving your needs. 5 directory 120 North County Road Palm Beach, Florida P F The Rabbi rabbi@palmbeachsynagogue.com , ext. 2 Rabbi Moshe Scheiner was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He holds a masters degree in Talmudic Studies and Jewish Philosophy from the Rabbinical College of America. He completed a two-year internship at the Rabbinical College of Australia and New Zealand, and returned to New York to receive his rabbinic ordination at the United Lubavitcher Yeshivah. Rabbi Scheiner has lectured to communities in Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Singapore, Colombia and other communities in South America, as well as in the United States. In 1994, he became the founding Rabbi of The Palm Beach Synagogue. He also founded the Ethel & Eugene Joffe Maimonides Leadership Institute for post-bar and Bat Mitzvah students. In 2010, the Rabbi was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the Rabbinical College of America. Rabbi Scheiner resides in Palm Beach with his wife Dinie and their five children. The Rebbetzin dinie@palmbeachsynagogue.com , ext. 5 Rebbetzin Dinie Scheiner was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Beth Rivkah Seminary. Before moving to Florida with her husband, she taught in early childhood programs in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, English studies to elementary school children in New York City, and spent summers teaching in the former Soviet Union (Moscow, Kiev and Riga). The Rebbetzin is Director of the Nechamkin Hebrew School at PBS. As Director, she is responsible for the development and implementation of the School s curriculum and programming; supervision of the teaching staff; as well as teaching classes. She worked with her husband in establishing the Synagogue and is actively involved in all aspects of the Synagogue s programs and events, especially the Women s, Singles and Youth Events, and teaches regularly scheduled classes to women Program Guide 3

6 The Staff Teen Director , ext 4 Rabbi Didy Waks grew up in Melbourne, Australia and is the 11th of 17 children. He studied at Yeshiva College Melbourne, the Rabbinical College of Australia and New Zealand, and yeshivot in Israel, Argentina and the United States. For several years during and subsequent to his rabbinical studies, he conducted youth programs and helped supervise summer camps, where he was responsible for curriculum development and staff supervision. He has taught Talmud at the Jewish Technical Vocational School in Brooklyn, New York. This is Rabbi Waks s second year at Palm Beach Synagogue and he is looking forward to making PBS one of the best Synagogues for teens and youth programs. Youth Director devorah@palmbeachsynagogue.com , ext. 4 Rebbetzin Devorah Waks was born in Brooklyn, New York and attended Beth Rivkah School, continuing her studies at Ohel Chana Seminary in Melbourne, Australia. She has been a program director and teacher at primary schools and has run summer camp programs in several states. Since 2009, Devorah has been an educator and program coordinator at the Jewish Children s Museum in Brooklyn. Devorah married Didy Waks on July 11, 2010, and they have a baby boy, Menachem Mendel. Together with Rabbi Waks, Devorah will be running all the Synagogue s youth programs. Executive Director director@palmbeachsynagogue.com , ext. 3 Maxine Kaufman originally from York, Pennsylvania, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Maxine moved to Florida in 1996 and has worked in the Jewish community in Palm Beach County since She has taken graduate level courses at Hebrew College and Siegal College in pursuit of a Master s Degree in Jewish Studies. Maxine has been with Palm Beach Synagogue since November of Maxine has two children, Evan 21 and Aimee 19. After moving to Florida in 1996, she became a middle school science teacher. Amy rekindled her college romance in Florida and married Steve in Steve and Amy have two children Traci 11 and Ashley 9. 11 celebrations & Events Yom Ha Shoah Memorial Program Power Point Presentation Monday, April 8 7:00 pm Join us to commemorate Yom Ha Shoah with Mr. Howard Herskowitz, author of Aaron s Journey, and watch his riveting Power Point presentation on his family s story. Mr. Howard Herskowitz convinced his father, Aaron, to tell his story despite resistance to revisiting those nightmarish memories. In 1990, when Aaron was seventy-five years old, Howard Herskowitz and his brother Louis accompanied their parents to Bilke (presently in the Ukraine) for the first time since the end of World War II. Howard Herskowitz documented his father s story, both on film and in writing, capturing all the dramatic elements of Aaron s Journey. Mr. Herskowitz s upbringing by two Jewish Holocaust survivors fostered a life-long interest in history, with an especially passionate curiosity about the lack of Jewish resistance during World War II. When Mr. Herskowitz became a lawyer, he always maintained empathy for the innocent underdog in a conflict against seemingly insurmountable odds. These laws, based on several verses in the Torah, give fascinating insight into the Torah s and the Rabbis understanding of community insights which are applicable in our day just as surely as they were at the time the Rabbis of the Mishnah and the Talmud. Ms. Rosman was awarded an art scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology where she earned her degree in textile design. Upon graduation, she began her career as a textile designer for one of New York s leading textile manufacturers, with many of her original designs having helped change the industry. She went on to work as a freelance designer for such clients as Noritake and Sears Roebuck and Company. Yona Metzger Chief Rabbi of Israel November Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger was born in Haifa in He served in the IDF 7th Armored Brigade, fought in several wars, and was discharged as an army chaplain with the rank of captain. Rabbi Blech has served as an associate professor of Talmud at Yeshiva University (YU) since He is a recipient of the American Educator of the Year Award and has formed thousands of student-teacher relationships through his warm and caring style. A tenth-generation Rabbi, Rabbi Blech is Rabbi Emeritus of Young Israel of Oceanside, where he served for 37 years. Presently, Rabbi Blech is actively involved in meetings with the Vatican, including the Pope, to arrange for the return of precious manuscripts held by the Church to the Jewish people. Consul General Chaim Shacham January Consul General Chaim Shacham is presently the Consul General of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico, assigned to Miami, Florida. Prior to this assignment, he served as the Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Information & Internet Department. He participated in the Israeli delegation to the Madrid Peace Conference (1991) and the subsequent rounds of Middle East peace negotiations in Washington, D.C. In this capacity, he drafted the speech given by the late Prime Minister Rabin at the signing of the Israeli-Palestinian Declaration of Principles on the White House lawn on September 13, Consul General Shacham immigrated to Israel after completing high school. He served as an IDF armored company commander, and has a degree in international relations and political science from the State University of New York. Rabbi Shlomo Riskin February 2 Rabbi Shlomo Riskin was born in 1940, in Brooklyn, New York. Although his family was not religiously observant, he attended the Yeshiva of Brooklyn, where he was influenced to adopt a more Orthodox lifestyle. He graduated from YU in 1960, and became an ordained Rabbi under the guidance of Rabbi Joseph Soloveichik. In 1963, Rabbi Riskin received his Master s degree in Jewish History, and in 1982 he completed his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Literature from New York University. He was the founding Rabbi of Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York City from During the 1960s and 1970s, he was a leader of the movement to allow free and unfettered emigration for Soviet Jews and made several trips to visit and strengthen the Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union. In 1983, Rabbi Riskin emigrated to Efrat, Israel, with his family to become the city s Rabbi, a position he holds today. Rabbi Jeremiah Wohlberg February 8 9 Rabbi Jeremiah Wohlberg was ordained as a Rabbi at YU s Rabbi Issac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS), and thereafter served as the founding Rabbi of Congregation Ohav Sholom in Merrick, New York, for 47 years. At an early age, he received his passion for singing and chazzanut from his father who was a cantor in the IDF. Cantor Goldberg had voice coaching with teachers from the Julliard School in NYC but most of his knowledge of music, nusach and being a shaliach tzibur emanates from his father Arie Goldberg. Cantor Goldberg has officiated as the full time Chazzan of Congregation Etz Chaim of Flatbush (Brooklyn, NY) since he was 19, and has been their Chazzan for 11 years. He appeared on the Chabad Telethon in 2010 and has been the guest Chazzan in many synagogues around the U.S., including Park East Synagogue (NYC), Congregation Kneseth Israel (The White Shul), Cong Ohr Torah (Highland Park, NJ), and Kingsway Jewish Center (Brooklyn, NY). Cantor Avi Albrecht January Cantor Avi Albrecht appears in every major city in the United States, Canada, and world-wide. He has appeared as a guest soloist with major symphony orchestras such as the Prague Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Queens Symphony, Jerusalem Symphony and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a composer of note and many cantors sing his melodies to Shabbat prayers during their services. Presently, he is the cantor of the well-known Beth Tefiloh Congregation in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the largest modern Orthodox synagogues in North America. Cantor Gideon Zelermyer February 8 9 Cantor Gideon Zelermyer is a graduate of the Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute, where he studied with Naftali Herstik and Raymond Goldstein. Prior to his studies in Israel, he completed his undergraduate degree at George Washington University, where he performed a number of oratorios in the presence of President Bill and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. He has officiated on numerous occasions at Shabbat and festival services at the Jerusalem Great Synagogue, and has made frequent appearances as the soloist with the Jerusalem Great Synagogue Choir. Since 2004, Cantor Zelermyer has been the Chazzan of Congregation Sha ar Hashamayim, and has a series of recordings of that congregation. Mark Langfan Pro-Israel Activist and Entrepreneur Thursday, October 25 7:00 pm Mr. Mark Langfan is a New York attorney who writes frequently on Middle Eastern affairs and security issues confronting Israel. He has created a three-dimensional topographical model of Israel to explain the implications of strategic height and depth for Israel s security, and has published many articles and produced videos on Israel s security, which are available on his website, In 1994, Mr. Langfan presented a pivotal Congressional lecture series, under the auspicious of the Center for Security Policy, concerning the possible deployment of U.S. troops to the Golan Heights. He was awarded several prizes, including the Defender of Jerusalem Prize for work advancing Israel s and Jerusalem s security. Mark Langfan is the son of Synagogue member William Langfan. Douglas Kear Murray Associate Director of the Henry Jackson Society Sunday, November 18 7:00 pm Douglas Kear Murray is a British writer and commentator. He was the director of the Centre for Social Cohesion from 2007 until 2011, and is currently an associate director of the Henry Jackson Society. Mr. Murray appears regularly in the British broadcast media and he is often critical of Islamic fundamentalism. He writes for a number of publications, including Standpoint and The Spectator. He is the author of Neoconservatism: Why We Need It (2005) and Bloody Sunday: Truths, Lies and the Saville Inquiry (2011). Jennifer Roth Senior Vice President Fine Arts, Sotheby s Tuesday, December 4 7:00 pm Jennifer Roth is a director of Sotheby s Fine Arts mid-season sales, and a director of Sotheby s Tel Aviv. During her long and dynamic career at Sotheby s, she has worked on a number of single-owner collections, including the estates of Andy Warhol; Greta Garbo; Michael and Doris Zagayski; Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; and Raymond and Patsy Nasher. Since the early 1990s, she has been deeply involved in all sales of Israeli Art and Judaica at Sotheby s, organizing the annual Israeli art and Judaica sales in New York City. Mrs. Roth volunteers for many benefit auctions, primarily for Jewish and Israeli organizations. She has lectured on Israeli art at The Jewish Museum, UJA Federation in New York City, The Hampton Synagogue, the Santa Barbara JCC and Hadassah. Klein is National President of the Zionist Organization of America, the oldest pro-israel group in the U.S., founded in He is a member of the Executive Committee of AIPAC and is widely regarded as one of the leading Jewish activists in the U.S. He is a child of Holocaust survivors, born in a displaced persons camp in Germany. Mr. Klein was an economist in the Nixon, Ford, and Carter administrations. His successful campaigns against anti-israel bias in leading textbooks, travel guides, universities, churches, and the media, as well as his work on Capitol Hill, were the subject of 30 feature stories both here and in Israel. In recognition of his efforts, Mr. Klein has received numerous awards and honors. Auschwitz Liberation Day Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger Author of A German Life Sunday, January 27 7:00 pm Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger is the son of a highly decorated World War II German tank commander, who was personally awarded the Iron Cross by Adolf Hitler, and a German refugee from the Sudeten region. He was raised in Germany, and his parents tried to conceal their past and protect him from the effects of World War II. With unsatisfactory answers to his questions about the Holocaust, Dr. Wollschlaeger explored Israel and Judaism, and went on a spiritual journey leading to his conversion to Judaism and emigration to Israel. He explores how history can impact and devastate a family, and through introspection and turmoil, he found a true sense of belonging to the Jewish people and their beliefs. Alan M. Dershowitz Felix Frankfuter Professor of Law at Harvard University Law School Tuesday, January 29 7:00 pm Professor Alan M. Dershowitz is a Brooklyn native who has been called the nation s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer and one of its most distinguished defenders of individual rights, the best-known criminal lawyer in the world, the top lawyer of last resort, America s most public Jewish defender and Israel s single most visible defender the Jewish state s lead attorney in the court of public opinion. For 20 years, he served as clinical director of the Department of Psychiatry at St. Francis Hospital (Pittsburgh) and was an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He has been awarded honorary degrees from St. Vincent s College, Duquesne University and University of Pennsylvania based on his scientific contributions and community efforts. Young Jewish woman in pre-med in college, ends up in law school after a chemistry accident. After a few years of glamorous environmental law, she was off to Geneva and finds herself at the UN listening to terrorists discuss human rights. How to top that? Pastry school in Paris was the obvious choice. A catering business in Geneva, taught a few cooking classes in French and then came back to the U.S. to start a cooking school in the D.C. area. Oh yeah, had four kids at some point. Now I travel the country teaching kosher cooking and baking, and proving that kosher food can be beautiful, elegant and delicious. Coming to Israel from Poland at the age of 18, Stern studied at the Hebrew University and joined the Irgun in 1932, a more militant army than the Haganah which was under the authority of the local labor movement. In 1940, Stern split from the Irgun when it supported the British in their fight against the Nazis. Stern dedicated his life to the establishment of an independent State of Israel, free of British colonialism. His new underground army was not as successful as Stern hoped due to the lack of adequate funding. The British eventually captured Stern and he was killed on February 12, His son, Yair, was born a few months after his death and is a verteran broadcast journalisht and TV news anchor in Israel. 45 Book Club Shabbat, December 1 Saving Israel How the Jewish People Can Win a War That May Never End By Daniel Gordis In Saving Israel, Daniel Gordis offers a new defense of the Jewish state, asking first why Israel is necessary, and then discussing what Israel has to do in order to survive its enemies. Mr. Gordis begins with a novel discussion of Israel s purpose, reflecting on the overlooked ways in which Israel has changed the existential condition of Jews everywhere. In the process, he grapples with controversial questions about Israel, Israeli Arabs, Muslims, and the international community that many Israelis and American Jews are loath to confront.
