1 June 15, 2006 Volume 2 Issue 6 FRIVOLOUS AND FUN LONE STAR REDHATTERS THE MAD HATTER Hot Flashes, Hot Weather! The June Hoot was Hot! I loved opening my home to this wonderful group of women. The June Hoot was a small gathering but a very successful one. The attendees were: Annice Keeling, Connie Smoot, Terry Bosquez, Hope Arellano, Karen Booth, Betty Gavora, Gina Wilson. Jo Ann Dubois and Carolyn Hooks. I was so pleased to also have in attendance my son s girlfriend and very special young lady, Christina Vasquez. She was even dressed so pretty in Pink. (can you say Pink Hatter?) Everyone arrived with lunch in hand. I had some snacks, soda and dessert but the theme was BYOL so all the ladies had an assortment of lunches. We decided to go ahead and eat so nothing would get cold and then have the meeting afterward. Our only birthday this month was Carolyn Hooks and she arrived with a beautiful cake. She is taking a cake decorating class at Hobby Lobby and she had made a Red Hat cake it was precious and delicious. I showed everyone the new chapter charter certificate that I received when I renewed the chapter. New membership cards were passed out and all in attendance gave me their 5.00 membership fee. We do have three spaces available in our regular membership roster. Upon arrival some of the ladies brought in donations for the Women of the Well. Linda had asked that maybe we could bring the donations at a later Hoot. We discussed this program and the fact that it is just too hot to clean out the garage or closets now and we will be sending more donations in the coming months. Hopefully we can have the woman in charge come to our Hoot and give the donations directly to her. We all thanked Terry for taking over the job of events coordinator and commended her on a fine job. Terry asked for any comments to help her with anything that maybe she could do better or any to look into. We also talked about the fact that Flamingo Bingo registration is closed. Debbie Herring has 250 people now and a waiting list. Several of our ladies will be attending and I m sure it will be a great deal of fun. This is also the same date as our August Hoot. Those of you attending Flamingo Bingo can tell us all about it at our September Hoot. The August Hoot will be held on the second Saturday of the month as usual for those who are not attending the Bingo. We discussed fundraiser s again. I asked everyone to be thinking about this and that we should probably have a fundraiser committee. When we do have a little money to go into a fund for our chapter, Woodforest Bank has a no service fee, no charge for checks for people over 50. Linda s daughter Stacey had a baby girl, Adelyn. Little Adelyn had a rocky start but with lots of prayers she is home now. We wish her all the best and then some.

Roe Ann and her husband Larry drove up to Austin to be a part of this wonderful day for their daughter. Let s send best wishes to Emma and new Hubby. They are expecting baby girl in September. The matter of the calendar was brought up by Hope. There are some of the ladies that don t really want to participate in the calendar. This is just fine. Since there are no rules, no one has to participate in anything they don t want to. Discussion was made of having an 18 month calendar. We discussed dressing up our pets for the calendar. We could have a calendar with nothing but group pictures from our Hoots. There is nothing that says that it has to be of one particular thing. I believe that whatever we come up with is going to be outstanding. Betty discussed the classy anniversary event she attended at Morningside Manor. Discussion was also made of the new musical that Delores is in at the Josephine Theatre, Don t Pass Me By. Maybe we can attend on Red Hat Day. I want to thank you all for your continued prayers for my family. We just found out that mother has an excess amount of water in her brain. I am taking her to her doctor to find out if it can be drained. This may be the cause of her unsteadiness, dizziness, nausea and disorientation at times. Karen discussed her husband Denny. They are having to go through not knowing if Denny has Cancer or not. They have no particular date of any test that will verify the possible diagnosis. Our Prayers are with you guys. Carolyn s sister is still waiting on a transplant but Carolyn says she is doing okay. Also, Carolyn s daughter has moved to San Antonio and you can just tell by the way she talks that Carolyn is just thrilled. After all the business was handled we got down to some fun. The baby picture contest was at hand. I had sent the pictures to everyone who wasn t going to be attending and had submitted a picture beforehand. I received some guesses back. I wanted to be able to pass out the prizes at that time. I passed out the numbered pictures along with a sheet for everyone s answers. The comments were priceless and the fun and laughing began. On the following pages I will have the pictures and answers. The winners were as follows: 1st. Connie Smoot 15.5 pts. 2nd. Karen Booth 15.5 pts. 3rd. Gina Wilson 12 pts. 3rd. Carolyn Hooks 12 pts. Booby Jo Ann Dubois 4 pts. This was a lot of fun and everyone was so cute. I also want to thank everyone for indulging me by listening to me sing a song and then listening to my family CD. My mother was having a blast singing along and really enjoyed the complements on her singing. It was a walk down memory lane and I appreciate you letting us share that with you.

4 DISHIN WITH THE DAME I am one of those people fortunate enough to have both parents! That really shouldn t be such a statement of significance but we all know it is. To reach the age of well, I am a Red Hatter! and have both parents with you healthy and kicking! is a blessing. However, we all know it s even more of a wonder that they are together and still in love! The family buried a good man last week dear Uncle Joe. We saw lots of relatives some I hadn t seen in 30 years. People just shouldn t put off seeing one another until something like this happens. We all stay too busy and take too much for granted. Family and good friends are the most valuable parts of our lives and should NEVER be taken for granted. We lose too much in our lives by putting it off until later. I intend to be more conscious of this from now on. I told you about Mom, the camp and how proudly I celebrate Mother s Day. Now I will tell you about Dad. His job led us to the camp. We learned the meaning of shift work there. I was pretty good at being quiet. (NO! it is the truth!) Little sister had a more difficult time of it. But we managed mainly because there were so many ways to entertain yourselves and have fun. We weren t raised financially rich. We were raised honest, mouthy and hard headed! Naturally, this means things aren t always peaceful for us! Our riches were in what we chose to enjoy in the good times and endure in the hard times. Dad was King of the Backyard Barbeque. Everything he pulled off his pit was wonderful - from rattlesnake to beef steak. My favorite was always his beef short ribs. Mercy! All you needed was Mom s potato salad. They would save chicken wings and freeze them. When he had a big barbeque with company, he would pull them out and put them on early. Then he would hand them out to the beggars to keep them out of his hair while he worked his mesquite magic. BRILLIANT! Days off took us to Port Isabel. We would rent a cabin at Purdy s Courts and have a grand time. They had a really long pier and when Dad took us out, he spent more time untangling and baiting than he ever did wetting a hook but it was what we all wanted to do, and he never hesitated to do it. He got his serious fishing in when we were otherwise occupied. Sometimes another family or two would go - all with boats and kids and it was fantastic. We would take the boats out to the other side of the cut and set up a base camp. Kids played in the sand dunes by day and sat around campfires at night while parents fished off the beach under the lights and moon. It was truly a wonderful experience. When we went back in, the Dads would all go to the cleaning pier to clean the catch and prepare it to eat then or freeze. We had good fish in the freezer all year long. The first thing they would do is cut off a few fish heads and tie them to cords for the kids to go crabbing off the end of the cleaning pier. By the time they were finished, we would have a bucket full of crabs and a pier full of teasing pinches and squeals. I was very lucky to be raised by parents strong enough to stand beside each other for all this time and even luckier to have them to enjoy during this period of our lives when we can truly appreciate just what that means. I wasn t able to accomplish it myself; and it makes me sad, because I know what it is. Mothers are given the right to celebrate Mother s Day from the point of conceiving a child through birth and beyond. Father s earn the right to celebrate Father s Day. Mine did! 6 THE DUCHESS WONDERS! by Connie Smoot Dissolve warts. Mix one part Apple Cider Vinegar to one part glycerine into a lotion and apply daily to warts until they dissolve. Relieve arthritis. Before each meal, drink a glass of water containing two teaspoons Apple Cider Vinegar. Give this folk remedy at least three weeks to start working. Remove corns. Make a poultice of one crumbled piece of bread soaked in one-quarter cup Vinegar. Let poultice sit for one-half hour, then apply to the corn and tape in place overnight. If corn does not peel off by morning, reapply the poultice for several consecutive nights. Cure an upset stomach. Drink two teaspoons Apple Cider Vinegar in one-cup water to soothe an upset stomach. Relieve itching. Use a cotton ball to dab mosquito and other bug bites with Vinegar straight from the bottle. Soothe sunburn pain. Apply undiluted Vinegar to the burn. Prevent yeast infections. Douche with one tablespoon White Vinegar to one-quart warm water to adjust the ph balance in the vagina. Clean dentures. Soak dentures overnight in White Vinegar, and then brush away tartar with a toothbrush. Cure the hiccups. Mix one teaspoon Apple Cider Vinegar in one cup of warm water, and drink. Condition dry hair. Shampoo, then rinse hair with a mixture of one cup Apple Cider Vinegar and two cups water. Vinegar adds highlights to brunette hair, restores the acid mantel, and removes soap film and sebum oil. Relieve a cold. Mix one-quarter cup Apple Cider Vinegar with one-quarter cup honey. Take one tablespoon six to eight times daily. Relieve a cough. Many Uses of Vinegar!!! Mix one-half cup Apple Cider Vinegar, one-half cup water, one-teaspoon cayenne pepper, and four teaspoons honey. Take one tablespoon when cough acts up. Take another tablespoon at bedtime.

7 IF MY BODY WERE A CAR submitted by Linda Bray If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull, but that's not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus and it's especially hard to see things up close. My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins. It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently. But here's the worst of it -- Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter...either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!
