Therefore, Passover not only celebrates the historical Exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt, it is the night of redemption for all of Jewish history, past, present and future. The Exodus from Egypt set the stage for all future redemptions, and so Passover has a particular relevance and inspirational meaning in our own generation perhaps more so than ever before. Throughout our history, Jews have conducted Passover Seders under the threat of blood libels and pogroms; in ghettos, prisons and even concentration camps, always praying for "Next Year in Jerusalem." I can still smell my grandmother s brisket and Matzah ball soup more than twenty years later. Each year, my grandparents who survived the Holocaust, would regale us with happy stories from their home in pre-war Europe along with frightening tales of their time during the war. This Passover is going to be bittersweet for my family. For the first time in my life, I won t be with my parents, siblings or cousins which will obviously be strange and sad. However, this Passover marks a special milestone for our family: it is our first Seder living in the Land of Israel! For centuries, my ancestors have read the Haggadah s powerful words, "this year we are here; next year in Jerusalem!" Now that we have recently fulfilled our life long dream of making "aliyah" and moving to Israel, what a thrill it will be to say along with my wife and children, "This year in Jerusalem!" Preparing this Haggadah has been a labor of love as I recall so many great stories, and Torah commentaries from my years spent around my grandfather s Seder Table. 6 The Order of the Seder The Seder The Hebrew word Seder means order because the night consists of fifteen orderly steps that each Seder follows. Why can t each person simply celebrate our night of liberation as he or she sees fit? To demonstrate the important lesson that true freedom is not achieved by everyone doing whatever he wants, but following the word of God. Despite the seemingly rigid parameters, go visit any two Jewish homes and you will not find two identical Seders. Each family adds their own customs and personality so that, in the end, the Seder is a charming balance between structure and spontaneity. This is the secret recipe for how an ancient story never gets old! This year we are slaves; next year we will be free people. What makes this night different from all other nights? On all other nights we eat chametz or Matzah, but and on this night only Matzah. On all other nights we eat any kind of vegetables, but on this night Maror. On all other nights we do not dip even once, but on this night we do so twice. 11 Uncover the Matzah and say: Magid The central focus of the Seder is the section of Magid. Magid (מגיד) means to tell and shares the same root as in Haggadah (הגדה) based on Exodus (13:8): - vehigad'ta l'bincha: "And you והגדת לבנך shall tell your children, on that day, saying: that on account of this the Lord took me out of Egypt." However, the same Hebrew root נ-ג-ד has another meaning as well and that is to bind, join and connect. What is the connection between telling a story and joining together? By recounting the story of the Exodus, we are doing more than recalling events that occurred long ago. Telling our story connects one generation to the next, joining us to our grandparents and our grandchildren. We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord, our God, took us out from there with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm. If the Holy One, blessed be He, had not taken our fathers out of Egypt, then we, our children and our children's children would have remained enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Even if all of us were wise, all of us understanding, all of us knowing the Torah, we would still be obligated to discuss the exodus from Egypt. Everyone who discusses the exodus from Egypt at length is praiseworthy. It happened that Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabbi Elazar ben Azaryah, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Tarphon were reclining at a Seder in B'nei Berak. They were discussing the exodus from Egypt all that night, until their students came and told them: "Our Masters, the time has come for reciting the morning Shema." Rabbi Eleazar ben Azaryah said: "I am like a man of seventy years old, yet I did not succeed in proving that the exodus from Egypt must be mentioned at night-until Ben Zoma explained it: "It says (Deut. 16:3), 'That you may remember the day you left Egypt all the days of your life;' now 'the days of your life' refers to the days, and the additional word all' indicates the inclusion of the nights." 12 Baruch hamakom baruch hu. Baruch shenatan Torah le amo Yisrael, baruch hu. Blessed is the Omnipresent One, blessed is He. Blessed is He who gave the Torah to His people Israel, blessed is He. The Torah speaks of four children: One is wise, one is wicked, one is simple and one does not know how to ask. The wise one, what does he say? "What are the testimonies, the statutes and the laws which the Lord, our God, has commanded you?" (Deut. 6:20) You, in turn, shall instruct him in the laws of Passover, up to 'one is not to eat any dessert after the Passover Lamb.' The wicked one, what does he say? "What is this service to you?" He says 'to you,' but not to him. By excluding himself from the community he has denied that which is fundamental. You, therefore, blunt his teeth and say to him: "It is because of this that the Lord did for me when I left Egypt" (Ex. 13); 'for me' - but not for him; If he had been there, he would not have been redeemed." The simple one, what does he say? "What is this?" Thus you shall say to him: "With a strong hand the Lord took us out of Egypt, from the house of slaves." 13 מגיד - Magid As for the one who does not know how to ask, you must initiate him, as it is said: "You shall tell your child on that day, 'It is because of this that the Lord did for me when I left Egypt.'" (Ex. 13:8) One may think that the discussion of the exodus must be from the first of the month. The Torah therefore says, 'On that day.' (Ex. 13:8) 'On that day,' however, could mean while it is yet daytime; the Torah therefore says, 'It is because of this.' (Ex. 13:8) The expression 'because of this' can only be said when Matzah and Maror are placed before you. In the beginning our fathers served idols; but now the Omnipresent One has brought us close to His service, as it is said: "Joshua said to all the people: Thus said the Lord, the God of Israel, 'Your fathers used to live on the other side of the river - Terach, the father of Abraham and the father of Nachor, and they served other gods. "And I took your father Abraham from beyond the river, and I led him throughout the whole land of Canaan. I increased his seed and gave him Isaac, and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave Mount Seir to possess it, and Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt." 14 Cover the Matzah, raise the cup of wine and say: V'hi she-amdah la-avoteinu v'lanu. Shelo echad bilvad amad aleinu l'chaloteinu, ela sheb'chol dor vador om'dim aleinu l'chaloteinu, v'hakadosh baruch hu matzilenu miyadam. Put down the wine cup and uncover the Matzah. Blessed is He who keeps His promise to Israel, blessed is He. For the Holy One, blessed is He, calculated the end of the bondage, in order to do as He had said to our father Abraham at the "Covenant between the Portions," as it is said: "And He said to Abraham, 'You shall know that your seed will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will enslave them and make them suffer, for four hundred years. For not just one alone has risen against us to destroy us, but in every generation they rise against us to destroy us; and the Holy One, blessed be He, saves us from their hand. Pharaoh had issued a decree against the male children only, but Laban wanted to uproot everyone - as it is said: "The Aramean wished to destroy my father; and he [Jacob] went down to Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; and he became there a nation - great and mighty and numerous." 15 Distinctive - Metzuyanim The Hebrew word for distinctive, metsuyan (מצוין) might sound familiar. It is,(ציון) derived from the same word as Zion teaching us that God s holy city is not just a location, it is a way of life. God created a special place on earth which would be the ideal incubator for spiritual growth. The word Zion therefore describes not only where we live but how we must live. "And he went down to Egypt"- forced by Divine decree. "And he sojourned there" - this teaches that our father Jacob did not go down to Egypt to settle, but only to live there temporarily. Thus it is said, "They said to Pharaoh, We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks because the hunger is severe in the land of Canaan; and now, please, let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen." (Gen. 47:4) "Few in number" - as it is said: "Your fathers went down to Egypt with seventy persons, and now, the Lord, your God, has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven." (Deut. 10:22) "And he became there a nation" - this teaches that Israel was distinctive there. "Great, mighty" - as it is said: "And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, and multiplied and became very, very mighty, and the land became filled with them." (Ex. 1:7) "And numerous" - as it is said: "I caused you to thrive like the plants of the field, and you increased and grew and became very beautiful your bosom fashioned and your hair grown long, but you were naked and bare." 16 Egyptians treated us badly The Hebrew word for bad here also contains the exact opposite meaning, friendship. The Haggadah is making a subtle observation and describing the origins of Hebrew slavery. At first the Egyptians befriended the Jews and only gradually did they begin to institute discriminatory laws, persecution and finally slavery but it started with friendship. This pattern has repeated itself throughout Jewish history where a host nation invites Jews in and offers protection, but as the generations go on, the hospitality runs out and anti-semitism begins to appear. The pattern always follows Genesis (12:3) "Those who bless you will be blessed and those who curse you will be cursed." As soon as the host country begins to curse the Jews through discrimination and persecution, its days are numbered and it soon follows the trajectory established first by the Egyptians: from a major world empire to a historical footnote. "The Egyptians treated us badly and they made us suffer, and they put hard work upon us." (Deut. 26:6) "The Egyptians treated us badly" - as it is said: Come, let us act cunningly with the people lest they multiply and, if there should be a war against us, they will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the land." (Ex. 1:10) "And they made us suffer" - as it is said: "They set taskmasters over the people of Israel to make them suffer with their burdens, and they built storage cities for Pharaoh, Pitom and Ramses." (Ex. 1:11) "And they put hard work upon us" - as it is said: "The Egyptians made the children of Israel work with rigor." (Ex. 1:13) "And we cried out to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our suffering, our labor and our oppression." (Deut. 26:8) "And we cried out to the Lord, the God of our fathers" - as it is said: "During that long period, the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel groaned because of the servitude, and they cried out. And their cry for help from their servitude rose up to God." (Ex. 2:24) "And he saw our suffering" - this refers to the separation of husband and wife, as it is said: "God saw the children of Israel and God took note." (Ex. 2:25) "Our labor" - this refers to the "children," as it says, "Every boy that is born, you shall throw into the river and every girl you shall keep alive." (Ex. 1:22) "And our oppression" - this refers to the pressure, as it is said: "I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them." 18 Names of God There are many mystical names of God which have different nuances and associations. We often refer to His Presence as the שכינה - she-khee-na which comes from the word שכן - sha-khen, meaning a close neighbor, alluding to our close, personal relationship with the Almighty. "I will pass through the land of Egypt" - I and not an angel; "And I will smite every first-born in the land of Egypt" - I and not a seraph; "And I will carry out judgments against all the gods of Egypt" - I and not a messenger; "I - the Lord" - it is I, and none other. "With a strong hand" - this refers to the pestilence as it says, "Behold, the hand of the Lord will be upon your livestock in the field, upon the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds and the flocks, a very severe pestilence." (Ex. 9:3) "And with an outstretched arm" - this refers to the sword, as it says, "His sword was drawn, in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem." (I Chronicles 21:16) "And with a great manifestation" - this refers to the revelation of the Divine Presence, as it says, "Has any God ever tried to take for himself a nation from the midst of another nation, with trials, signs and wonders, with war and with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great manifestations, like all that the Lord your God, did for you in Egypt before your eyes." 19 מגיד - Magid Spill three drops of wine and say: Spilling Wine We spill a drop of wine to symbolically empty our cup and even shed a tear for the suffering experienced by the Egyptians. We are taught not to rejoice at the downfall of our enemy, but to emphasize with universal feelings of sympathy and compassion. Our national experience of slavery taught us to love and care for all of God s children. The Torah puts it all into perspective for us, "You shall not abhor an Egyptian, for you were strangers in their land." (Deut. 23:8) "And with signs" - this refers to the staff, as it says, "Take into your hand this staff with which you shall perform the signs." (Ex. 4:17) "And wonders" - this refers to the blood, as it says, "And I shall show wonders in heaven and on earth. 21 מגיד - Magid Rabbi Yossi the Gallilean said: How do you know that the Egyptians were stricken by ten plagues in Egypt, and then were struck by fifty plagues at the sea? In Egypt it says of them, "The magicians said to Pharaoh 'This is the finger of God.' (Ex. 8:15) At the sea it says, "Israel saw the great hand that the Lord laid against Egypt; and the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in His servant Moses." (Ex. 14:31) Now, how often were they smitten by 'the finger'? Ten plagues. Thus you must conclude that in Egypt they were smitten by ten plagues, and at the sea they were smitten by fifty plagues. Rabbi Eliezer said: How do we know that each individual plague which the Holy One, blessed be He, brought upon the Egyptians in Egypt consisted of four plagues? For it is said: "He sent against them His fierce anger, fury, and indignation, and trouble, a discharge of messengers of evil" (Psalms 78:49): 'Fury,' is one; 'Indignation,' makes two; 'Trouble,' makes three; 'Discharge of messengers of evil,' makes four. 24 Pass-Over We don t automatically recognize the two words in "Passover" but the holiday name is really a combination referring to when God "passed over" the Jewish homes before the Exodus from Egypt. The Hebrew word is Pesach and is used not only in Exodus (12:23) when God "passed over", but in Isaiah (31:5) where God promises to guard Jerusalem from all harm, "Like flying birds, so will God protect Jerusalem, protecting and rescuing, passing over (pasoakh) and delivering." Raise the Matzah and say: their wealth, and split the sea for us, and took us through it on dry land, and drowned our oppressors in it, and supplied our needs in the desert for forty years, and fed us the manna, and gave us the Shabbat, and brought us before Mount Sinai, and gave us the Torah, and brought us into the land of Israel and built for us the Chosen House to atone for all our sins. Rabban Gamliel used to say: Whoever does not discuss the following three things on Passover has not fulfilled his duty, namely: The Passover Lamb, The Matzah, and the Bitter Herbs. The Passover Lamb that our fathers ate during the time of the Temple - for what reason did they do so? Because the Omnipresent passed over our fathers' houses in Egypt, as it says, "You shall say, It is a Passover-offering to the Lord, because He passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians with a plague, and He saved our houses. And the people bowed and prostrated themselves." (Ex. 12:27) This Matzah that we eat for what reason? 25 Raise the Bitter Herbs and say: In Every Generation I was a slave in Egypt. I received the Torah at Mount Sinai. Together with Joshua and Elijah, I crossed the Jordan River. I entered Jerusalem with David, was exiled from it with Zedekiah, and did not forget it by the rivers of Babylon. When the Lord returned the captives of Zion, I dreamed among the builders of its ramparts. I fought the Romans and was banished from Spain. I was bound to the stake in Mainz. I studied Torah in Yemen and lost my family in Kishinev. I was incinerated in Treblinka, rebelled in Warsaw, and emigrated to the Land of Israel, the country when I had been exiled and where I had been born, from which I come and to which I return. I am a wandering Jew who follows in the footsteps of his forebears, and just as I escorted them there and then, so do my forebears accompany me and stand here with me today. - Israeli President Ezer Weizman s remarks to the German Bundestag in 1996 of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, revealed Himself to them and redeemed them. Thus it is said: "They baked Matzah-cakes from the dough that they had brought out of Egypt, because it was not leavened; for they had been driven out of Egypt and could not delay, and they had also not prepared any other provisions." (Ex. 12:39) This Bitter Herb that we eat for what reason? Because the Egyptians embittered our fathers' lives in Egypt, as it is said: "They made their lives bitter with hard service, with mortar and with bricks, and with all manner of service in the field; all their service which they made them serve with rigor." (Ex. 1:14) In every generation a person is obligated to regard himself as if he had come out of Egypt, as it is said: "You shall tell your child on that day, it is because of this that the Lord did for me when I left Egypt." (Ex. 13:8) The Holy One, blessed be He, redeemed not only our fathers from Egypt, but He redeemed also us with them, as it is said: "It was us that He brought out from there, so that He might bring us to give us the land that He swore to our ancestors." 33 Jerusalem = Peace ירושלים - Jerusalem The name - contains the word Shalom,שלום the Hebrew word for Peace.' The world s holiest city, Jerusalem - ירושלים - has the word at its core which explains why the שלום Temple was constructed in a very special manner: "hammers, chisels or any iron instruments were not heard in the Temple when it was being built" (I Kings 6:7). No instruments of war or violence were not used so that peace would be built into the very foundation of Jerusalem s holy Temple. Jerusalem is meant to be the source for all peace on earth, for when Jerusalem is at peace, the whole world is at peace. 35 Messiah If you rearrange the Hebrew letters of the word for Messiah,,משיח you get ישמח / yee-sa-makh, he will rejoice. With the arrival of the Moshiach (Messiah), the whole world will finally be at peace, God will be universally recognized and true happiness will come to the entire world. 37 Israel Throughout the Bible, the Jewish people are known by the name Yisrael.The name Israel / ישראל refers to both the Land and the People and contains great insights. It begins with the smallest letter of the Hebrew alphabet - י - and concludes with the largest letter -.ל This contrast alludes to both its humble origins as well as its glorious destiny. Narrow Confines The Hebrew word for confines is closely related to the word for מ-צ-ר Egypt מצרים - meetz-ra-yeem. On a mystical level, Egypt symbolizes the agonizing straits that constrict us. Each of us occasionally finds ourselves trapped, sometimes for physical reasons, such as poverty or illness and sometimes for psychological reasons, such as depression or despair. Passover is the festival of hope and faith, teaching us that the Almighty saves us from the narrow confines. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His kindness is everlasting.
