1 Rabbi Mose Adler Savuot May IWYS Z - W OYDEWM HXMsL Te Talmud (Kiddusin 31a; Makkot 24a) tells us tat, wen our ancestors eard God speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, te only commandments te Israelites temselves actually eard were te first two: I [anoci] am HaSem your God and You sall ave no oter gods besides Me (Exodus 20:1, 2). Te Hasidic master Rabbi Nafali Tzvi of Ropczyce carries tis idea a step furter. He writes (Zera Kodes, vol. 2, p.40a), Te verse One ting God as spoken; two tings ave I eard (Psalm 62:12) suggests tat wen God spoke at Sinai, we eard only te alep of te word anoci from te Holy and Blessed One. In te silence of God s alep we eard all of te Ten Commandments. If every word of God means more tan it says, ten te silence of te initial letter of te first word must mean muc more tan any word can say. Just as God s word y i, let tere be contained te wole of te universe potentially, so did te alep of anoci contain te wole of te Tora potentially. Seeing tat eac of te Ten Commandments is cast in te singular for example, I am HaSem your God [Elo*ca], or Honor your fater [avica] and your moter imeca] we may furter conclude tat in te silence of God s alep, every Israelite eard God personally addressing im or er. NEWSLETTER Te Sound of Silence Bet El - Te Heigts Synagogue builds vibrant Jewis community. We welcome all in participatory, traditional, egalitarian worsip and learning. May IWYS / RYYA Eac Sabbat and major oliday, wen we pray V ten celkenu b torateca, grant us our sare in Your Tora, we are affirming tat every Jew, by virtue of is or er own abilities and propensities, as a sare in God s Tora, one tat is suited specifically to im or er. Wile all Jews are obligated to fulfill te Tora s commandments, people often tend to specialize or excel in certain mitzvot. Rabbi Zalman Scacter-Salomi recounts tat, as a student, e once saw some people elping te nearly paralyzed Rabbi Josep Scneerson, te sixt Lubavitcer Rebbe, put on is t fillin for morning prayers. A yes, te Rebbe said, tat s wat I am: a davener. Several Jews may be fulfilling te same mitzva at te same time, yet te particular kavana (mind-focus) tat eac brings to te act may differ from te kavanot of te oters. Similarly, at te end of te personal Amida a worsipper may sign off wit a biblical verse tat begins wit te first letter of is or er Hebrew name, as toug saying to God, I offer You tis Amida not only in te name of all my people, but also in my own name from me to You. In te divine silence of God s alep, we ear te sound of our own names, and we answer, ineni ere I am. May tis come true for us on Savuot, as we relive te transformative Sinai event. Hag samea! Newsletter: If you d like to get te pdf version, contact news@ beteleigts.org President s Perspectives, May 2013 Communication Is Key Wen one talks about te success or failure of a project, sports team, or even a marriage, communication or te lack tereof is a key element. If a business or event is successful, so muc is attributed to communication as being te lincpin. Altoug we ave numerous mecanisms wit wic to communicate, weter electronically, by paper, or by sound wave, communication must be a two-way street. It involves not only conveying information, but also actively listening. At te micro level, every week at Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue, we cant te full Tora portion, as it as been done for centuries. Tis, too, is a form of communication, as are our davening, discussions, and talks, be it during a d var or in our social all. (Te latter sometimes take on a greater intensity during te onset of a new baseball season, or during a new Cleveland Orcestra season at Severance Hall.) For te purposes of tis article, I wis to discuss two forms of Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue s communications: one tat as been around for some time; te oter, newer. First is our newsletter. Tis newsletter is, in my opinion, te backbone of our community. I totally understand and respect te fact tat websites, Facebook, and te like are critical forms of media communication, and yet our umble newsletter still stands out in so many ways. I truly believe it maintains our community on many levels, giving us a voice if we wis to sare tougts and ideas, and keeping us informed about events, bot ongoing and special. It s rare tat I single out one person for all te work e or se does for Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue, since we all put fort a collective effort. Yet I do want to recognize Carol Bruml, fellow member and our beind-te-scenes newsletter editor. Carol as been fulfilling tis role for 11 years, never missing a beat. Unfailingly, every single mont, Carol sends an to remind people of deadlines, sends more s to verify facts, and does all se can to fill in information tat may ave been omitted. It is a daunting task, often similar to erding squirrels, but someow Carol makes it work time and time again. As I begin to bring my term as President to a close, I personally want to communicate my tanks for all tat se as done, and continues to do, for Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue. At te same time, our synagogue is venturing into new and rater exciting communication territory. Yes, we ave our website and Facebook page, but now, tanks to member Mike Belusko, we re also on te radio and television! Recently, went out to our membersip, asking for written submissions for proposed radio ads, promoting our synagogue. We received a wide array of excellent submissions, demonstrating tat we are blessed wit members wo are adept communicators, wo captured and conveyed many interesting facets of our community. A group of seven members reviewed te materials, edited as needed, and read te ads as tey were professionally recorded for radio. Te results were as follows: Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue Newsletter, Vol. 15, No. 8, May 2013 Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue Carol Bruml, Editor Telepone , news@beteleigts.org General submittal deadline is te 7t of eac mont Desota Ave., Cleveland Heigts, OH Publised 11 times per year. ttp:// For address or mailing list cange, call
3 Wen we leave Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue on Sabbat, not only are our souls satisfied; our friendsips are renewed, and our minds are stimulated. Tat s ow we get ready for some Saturday nigt fun and te workweek to come. Our tree-and-a-alf-tousand year old tradition dates all te way back to Mt. Sinai, and is alive and well today. At Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue, our services are traditional, egalitarian, and participatory. We do our own organizing, but tat s part of te fun. Our programming represents te range of our members interests and includes jazz events, classical music events, and yout activities as well as Jewis and religious programs. At least once a mont we ave a Lunc and Learn wit a presentation by our rabbi or an outside speaker on traditional or contemporary topics. Hands-on Judaism trives in our corner of te universe. No matter ow you get ere, you will enjoy te coesion tat as traditionally sustained te Jewis people. I m, and you can find us online at beteleigts.org. Can a sul be bot warm and cool? Bet El-Te Heigts Synagogue is warm because: tere s a friendly greeting wen you come in; a traditional egalitarian service tat members participate in and lead, a learner s service to elp tose wo want to know more, and a sit down Kiddus wit lively conversation wit some of te Heigts most interesting people of all ages! Bet El-Te Heigts Synagogue is cool because: we ave jazz nigts after Sabbat and a classical music program, bot performed by our very talented members; a Sort Stories by Jewis Autors book club; we sponsor ice cream socials for our Cleveland Heigts neigborood, and Luncand-Learn programs on current issues. Our membersip includes Jews of all backgrounds and practices. Bet El-Te Heigts Synagogue is te warm and cool sul in te Heigts, welcoming all. Tere is a warm friendly synagogue on Desota Avenue in Cleveland Heigts tat welcomes all to its services and events. Tere you will find dozens of friendly ands to sake yours, a room full of smiles to greet you, laugter and stories to warm your eart, and invitations to participate in all parts of our traditional and egalitarian services. We are a congregation of voices tat praise G d (wit one more soon to be added wen e learns to talk). We pride ourselves on our diversity, inclusiveness, and ospitality. Ceck our website beteleigts.org for service times and activities and to learn more. I m. Come join us for Sabbat and oliday morning services. At te time of tis writing, te ads are sceduled to play for two weeks, starting on April 15t on WHK 1420 AM. If you missed tem, stay tuned, because our next venture will be in television. We will be communicating tis information and more in te next few monts. Tanks to all of our members wo do so muc to communicate ow special we are at Bet El Te Heigts Synagogue. 3 In te divine silence of God s alep, we ear te sound of our own names, and we answer, ineni ere I am. Rabbi Mose Adler In support of Yom Ha atzmaut, BE-THS Members Marty Gelfand, Sarona Hoffman, and Becky Scur meet and greet tose attending te Federation sponsored event in Greater Cleveland at te Bet El - Te Heigts Synagogue sponsored table on April 16.
4 Jonatan Pressman to Become Bar Mitzva Hi, I am Jonatan Pressman. I turned tirteen February 9, 2013, and will be celebrating my Bar Mitzva on May 25, Please join us for services and a festive kiddus! My parents are Stacia Dearmin and Jay Pressman; my broter is Isaia, and my two canine sisters are Sprinkle and Golde. I am a omescooled sevent grader. My favorite subjects are science, poetry, and mat. Some of my oter interests include ice-skating, piano, and-crafts, soccer, musical teater, and board games. Note te small gecko on Jonatan s sleeve, and te BIG smile! I also love animals. Tat is wy, for my Bar Mitzva project, I am supporting te wild ponies of Assateague Island. For tose wo do not know: In 2002, 173 ponies were counted (it is a small island). So wat s wrong? Well, wit foals a year, te population would soon pass 200, enoug to damage te island. Consequently, te Humane Society of te United States started a contraceptive program tat will limit birts. Te erd is staying around 170 and beginning to lessen towards te goal of 150. Now tere are two questions you may ask: wy is someone wo loves animals elping decrease te number of tese ponies, and wy do tey need money? Te answers are simple. Decreasing numbers protects teir limited abitat, and more mares are living for over 20 years tanks to reduced stress. As to te second, our government s games ave resulted in less money for te parks. It is important to note we will support tese orses toug teir Foster Horse Program wic will send us potos of te orses we ave elped wic will be temporarily displayed at synagogue. If you wis to elp us support tem please send a ceck made out to Assateague Island Alliance to us, c/o Jonatan Pressman, 3131 Corydon Road, Cleveland Heigts, You can learn more or make a credit card donation online at <www. assateagueislandalliance.org>. qsalom. 5 Cleveland Heigts resident Howard Goldberg states e felt at ome te moment I entered te sul. Te traditional, egalitarian approac, te decorum, te kidduses, and te connection from myparents to Rabbi and Nili Adler make supporting tis sul a pleasure. Howard is originally from Lorain, but as roots from Punavic, Supinka, and Glenville. He recently ended a career in ousing, economic, and community development in te public sector and is now part of te first management staff of a new national non-profit tat e elped (as a volunteer) develop strategic planning and real estate finance programs for. It was time (at age 57) to re-energize, Howard says. Howard now guest-lectures and mentors graduate students at CSU Levin Scool of Urban Affairs in real estate development and market analysis metodology. He as advised or served on boards of non-profits for more tan 30 years and maintains strong ties wit te affordable ousing and urban development communities. Howard s grandmoter ran te Goldberg Food Stores in Lorain. Howard says, Te R in Mr. R. Goldberg stands for Mr. Rebecca Goldberg. My Zadie was Pillip Goldberg. Advertising Mr. R. Goldberg was a clever way of acknowledging to tose tat knew te family, te local Jewis community (approximately 300 families by 1940), and oters tat my Bubie Rebecca actually owned te store, te business, and was in carge in an era (1927) wen gender equity was only known to an enligtened few. My Zadie ad a orse cart and peddled produce wen e wasn t raising money for Telse in Lituania and a couple of orpanages in Palestine. My Bubie was te leader, establised, ran, and owned te business. Se expanded to four corner stores in te 1940 s. Her son, my Uncle Meyer Goldberg (of blessed memory, and a former member of Bet El) in 1959 opened a super market tat grew to a cain in Lorain. My Bubie passed away in 1963 and by tat time tere was one store remaining tat se loved to operate. Growing up (till te age of 9) above te store gave me control of all of te important Passover mercandise. My grandmoter let me control te macaroons, te sugar gels, and te cocolate lollipops (tat are now extinct). I also remember er scolding a pop salesman out of te store wit a broom tat gave er fake Koser LePesca stickers for ginger ale tat lacked a ecksur.
