2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who were responsible for making our High Holiday services so successful. This year presented many unexpected challenges due to the absence of Cantor Liz Anker, but in true Am HaYam fashion, our community pulled together and created a wonderful, meaningful celebration for all who joined us. The first person on my list must be Rabbi Deanna Douglas. It is a privilege to have Deanna as our spiritual leader. Her sermons are always thought provoking. Her calming influence has gotten many of us through difficult moments. It is an honor to have her with us for the High Holidays and at other times during the year. Greg Sands and Cantor Norm Rubin provided us with magnificent musical renditions of the High Holiday prayers. Words can not adequately express my gratitude for the time and effort they put in to help make our services as beautiful as they were this year. And special thanks to cellist Liz Shultze, and soloist Richard Zinner for again gracing our Kol Nidre Service with their special talents. Zamerai, under the direction of Shira Sands, played an even more important part in this year s services. Thanks to all the members for the many hours of practice and dedication throughout the year. Thanks also to the many members who led the congregation with various readings and blessings. Both Steve Berrick and Ira Seldin, along with their set-up and usher committees, enabled us to have services that ran smoothly. The transformation of the Sanctuary was accomplished quickly, and everyone had a prayer book and a seat. I am in awe of your organizational skills. It would not be Rosh Hashanah without Harold Katz. Once again your sounding of the Shofar took our breaths away. Carol and Stephen Roth exemplify the meaning of Tzedakah. We are so grateful to you and your family for organizing our annual food drive. The time and effort and love that you put into this project every year is extraordinary. To our two Gabbaim, Gene Saklad and Shira Sands, our Torah Services are enhanced by your assistance. Becka Taylor stepped up to be the organizer and we were once again able hold our community Break-the-Fast. And thanks to everyone who brought all the delicious food. I know there are people I have forgotten to mention. Please forgive me and know that I appreciate all your efforts. Finally, to all of you who attended services with us this year, thank you for joining us to welcome in the New Year. Thank you for your continuing support of Am HaYam. I hope to see you at many of our programs and services during the coming year. Judy Keller 2

We have, so we are putting together an Am HaYam Directory. To include your name in the Directory, please send the following information to Jessica Dill at jrdill1@comcast.net: Name(s) Cape Address Other Address if applicable Local Telephone Number Only those people who participate will receive the Am HaYam Directory via . 5 BOOK CLUB - new The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 6, at the home of Rebecca and Michael Holmes in Orleans. The book is A Tale of Love and Darkness by Amos Oz. rebeccabholmes@comcast.net to rsvp and for directions. DRAMA GROUP newer The Am HaYam Drama Group will meet on Monday, November 15 th, 1:00-4:00 PM, at the home of Bernice Simon-Wolfson in Yarmouthport. We will be reading a play called, The Last Night of Ballyhoo written by Alfred Uhry who also wrote, Driving Miss Daisy. It was produced on Broadway and was the winner of the 1997 Tony Award for Best Play. It takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, in December of Hitler is invading Poland but Atlanta s German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. The play is about prejudice, family relationships and the conflicting cultures between German Jews of the South and more traditional Eastern European Jews of the Northeast. The Last Night of Ballyhoo is a funny, romantic play which carries a powerful message. If you plan to attend, please contact Bernice Simon-Wolfson : bsimwolf@comcast.net or Bernice Simon-Wolfson and Ruth Shapiro: Co-Chairs FRIDAY MORNING DISCUSSION GROUP newest! The Friday morning discussion group will hold its first session on Friday, October 8, 10 AM 11:30 AM. Martin and Deborah Jacobs will moderate and host the Discussion Group in their home. The first topic is "The Meaning of Life" and no, the answer isn't 42. Rather than entertain a broad esoteric, philosophical discussion, the topic will be framed in a personal sense: What gives meaning to your life? Because of space constraints, the group will be limited to the first Am HaYam members who call to reserve. If you are interested, please call the Jacobs at to get your name on a list of interested people. Discussions will focus on Jewish related topics and will range from current events to history, world and local happenings, etc. The moderators have set the focus for the first session (see above), and participants will be asked to suggest topics going forward. The Discussion Group will meet once a month. 5

6 YIDDISH CLUB Mamaloshen (the mother tongue) When you were a child, didn t you sit at the kitchen table with mama, papa, bubbie and zadie and hear mamaloshen? At the Yiddish Club - mamaloshen - some of us remember enough Yiddish and speak it, while others mostly listen. We enjoy the language, sharing our culture, history, song, poetry and reminiscing. The Yiddish Club will meet on October 14 th and 28th at 1 PM. We would love to have you join us. Call Sandy at with any questions or for location and directions. 10 ROSH CHODESH The first meeting of the new season for Rosh Chodesh will be on Thursday, October 21 st. at 7:30. It will be a planning meeting for the months of November through June. All women of AHY are welcome. I am looking forward to your participation of new and exciting thoughts and ideas. This meeting will be held at my home, 32 Wadsworth Lane, Yarmouthport. Please call or me at or bsimwolf@comcast.net if you wish to attend. Thanks. Bernice Simon-Wolfson, Chair, Rosh Chodesh FACING HISTORY AND OURSELVES For the past several years Am HaYam has paid tuition to send Lower Cape teachers to the Facing History and Ourselves week-long Summer Institute held in Brookline. Facing History and Ourselves, founded in 1976, has grown into a national organization that involves teachers in projects to study racism, anti-semitism and other forms of prejudice. The organization is rooted in study of the Holocaust and other genocides. This past summer two teachers attended the Institute one from Harwich High School, the other from Chatham High School. The program title was Holocaust and Human Behavior. A letter of appreciation from the Chatham teacher said in part, "The seminar I attended, Holocaust and Human Behavior, was by far the best professional development experience I've had. The content was rigorous and interesting. The activities were varied, engaging, and easily adapted to the classroom. The seminar focused primarily on the rise of the Nazi Party to power and the effects this had on ordinary people, but with an eye to using a "teachers toolset" that could be applied to similar historical events involving racial and ethnic minorities." The Harwich teacher reported: "This week was amazing in Brookline and has inspired and invigorated my passion for teaching ethical history. The instructors provided me not only with useable teaching strategies but also sensitized me to my students inner needs as well as everyone around me. I am currently creating a curriculum based on Facing History and want to capture my enthusiasm and deliver it over and over again to my students. Thank you so much for enabling me to take part in such a transformative seminar." Ira Seldin, Coordinator 10

11 LOCAL (Lower Cape Lunch) This organization s goal is to help satisfy the physical, social and spiritual hunger of our neighbors in need on the Lower Cape. It is one of the organizations to which Am Ha- Yam donates some of its funds through its Social Action Committee. LOCAL is a relatively new outreach organization functioning under the auspices of the Interfaith Council for the Homeless of Lower Cape Cod. Its purpose is to meet the needs of those in the greater Orleans area who are hungry, whether for food, fellowship or both. LOCAL serves lunches on Tuesdays and suppers on Thursdays at St. Joan of Arc Parish Center, averaging guests at each meal. Judi and Jay Bloom are the liaisons to LOCAL for Am HaYam. Am HaYam has committed to providing volunteers to assist each month on the 2nd Tuesday for lunch and 4 th Thursday for supper. Judi and Jay need more volunteers for the program. Volunteers help at 9:30AM to set up and/or 11:30AM to serve lunch and 3:30PM to set up and/or 5:30 PM to serve supper. Please call the Blooms at to volunteer for this mitzvah. TORAH STUDY The next session will be Sunday, October 17, with Rabbi Deanna Douglas, 10:30 AM at the Brewster Ladies Library. WOMEN S TORAH STUDY The Women s Torah Study group meets monthly year round on the fourth Tuesday of each month at members homes. We recently completed Genesis (the first book of the Torah) and are currently reading Exodus. We read and study in English, using various versions of the Jewish Bible and a number of commentaries. No experience necessary and you are welcome to join the group at any time. announcements will be sent a few days before each session with the location and directions. If you would like to be added to that list, please let me know. The October 26th meeting will be 2-4 PM at the home Shira Sands in Wellfleet. Rebecca B. Holmes 11

13 EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN SAVE THE DATE! Do you remember when Am Hayam would have a Pot-Luck Supper just to get together and enjoy each others' company? Do you remember when Am Hayam would sometimes pair a Pot-Luck Supper with an event like an evening Torah Study with Rabbi Alan Ullman? The idea was to socialize and have some appetite stimulation and intellectual stimulation at the same time. Well, we are about to re-instate this popular idea from the past and give it a new life! On Saturday November 13th, at 5:30 p.m. we will be having a Pot-Luck Supper and Havdalah Torah Study with Rabbi Alan Ullman at the Wellfleet Council on Aging. If you have not been to this venue before, you will be pleasantly delighted at this relatively new and open community room and kitchen facility located off Route #6, at 715 Old King's Highway, in Wellfleet. (Directions next month). We know how popular this event will be, so we are already taking reservations and keeping a list of the food that will be brought in to share at our buffet table. Please call co-chairs Judy Taylor at # , or Carol Roth at # to add your name to the list of attendees, and to offer your main dish, vegetable/salad dish or dessert contribution to our table. We will provide the hot and cold drinks as usual. Mark your calendar, and make that call today!! Don't miss out on this fun and stimulating event! Carol Roth and Judy Taylor, Coordinators THE JEWISH BUCKET LIST (from Rabbi Douglas s sermon on Yom Kippur) 10. VISIT THE NATIONAL YIDDISH BOOK CENTER in Amherst, MA. Yiddish isn't everyone's heritage but it is part of the Jewish cultural legacy. Aaron Lansky gets triple points into heaven for his inspiration to save the remnants of this world. 9. HELP A COMPLETE STRANGER. Here's a story from "More Stories for the Heart" by Alice Gray: The nurse escorted a tired, anxious young man to the bedside of an elderly man. Your son is here, she whispered to the patient. She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened. He was heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack and he dimly saw the young man standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand and the young man tightly wrapped his fingers around it, squeezing a message of encouragement. The nurse brought a chair next to the bedside. All through the night the young man sat holding the old man's hand and offering gentle words of hope. The dying man said nothing and he held tightly to his son. 13

14 As dawn approached, the patient died. The young man placed on the bed the lifeless hand he had been holding, then he went to notify the nurse. While the nurse did what was necessary, the young man waited. When she had finished her task, the nurse began to offer words of sympathy to the young man, but he interrupted her. Who was that man? he asked. The startled nurse replied, I thought he was your father. No, he was not my father, he answered. I never saw him before in my life. Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him? asked the nurse. He replied, I knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn't there. When I realized he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, I knew how much he needed me. " 8. LEARN PRAYER BOOK HEBREW. You can do this in 10 weeks from a book and CD entitled Prayerbook Hebrew the Easy Way. You'll feel as though you came down from the bleachers onto the playing field 7. CLIMB MASADA (or take the cable car). See to what extent people went to preserve their Jewish heritage and remain free from slavery. 6. CALL YOUR FAMILY. No, not the ones you talk to regularly, the ones you rarely speak with, or, sadly never talk to or see. As I said on Rosh Hashanah, being Jewish is being part of a story and that begins with family. If they turn you away, the sin is on their shoulders. 5. CELEBRATE/OBSERVE A JEWISH HOLIDAY that you've never celebrated or observed before. And I don't mean gifts for Chanukah or getting drunk on Purim. Read the Megillah, sit in a sukkah, fast on Tisha B'Av, plant on Tu B'shevat. If you don't know what they are, get a book about Jewish holidays out of the library. I recommend Seasons of Our Joy by Arthur Waskow or The Jewish Holidays by Michael Strassfeld. A more scholarly and fascinating approach is The Jewish Way: Living the Holidays by Yitz (Irving) Greenberg. 4. READ A BOOK OF JEWISH HISTORY. I recommend Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean, by Edward Kritzler or Yiddish Civilisation by Paul Kriwaczek. 3. GIVE JEWISH BOOKS as presents to your children and grandchildren. The lesson will be so clear: Jews and books go together. 2. GO TO A JEWISH CONCERT. Or if that's not possible, borrow from the library or buy some CD's that will open you eyes and ears to the breadth of Jewish music, including but not limited to Jewish liturgy. 1. TAKE A TRIP TO BROOKLINE, to the Israel Bookshop (say hello to Edie Dovek for me) and Kolbo to see how to beautify your home with Jewish art and objects. 1A. PUT A MEZUZZAH ON YOUR FRONT DOORPOST. Or if one is already there, put another one on the entrance to a room. 1B. CELEBRATE SHABBAT. Light Shabbat candles (you can have a Shabbat dinner over pizza; it's bread after all). Learn to make challah; with a bread machine, it's the easies thing in the world. My recipe and braiding technique are free for the asking. 14
