Peace that Passes Understanding One of the greatest possessions of a Christian is that inner tranquility that comes from serving the Creator in a determined, faithful manner. The happiest people on earth are genuine children of God. The most miserable are those who are trying to please both Satan and Christ. Their miserable efforts are not appreciated by either master. (Matthew 6:23; I Kings 18: 21) The joyous, contented saint has a tremendous influence. His godly demeanor coupled with his happy attitude draws men to the Father. (Matthew 5: 13-16; 1 Peter 2: 12.) The Lord did not intend for his people to be like Sad-Sack in the funny paper! We are so ungrateful we should rejoice always! (Philippians 4: 4) When we begin to count our many blessings we can visualize the wonderful things the Almighty has done for us. But, instead of listing our blessings we are prone to complain and worry over the secular affairs of life. As a result we are twice losers. Some of us have never learned to relax and let Jesus bear our burdens, (1 Peter 5: 7;Matthew 11: 28.) Seldom, in times of stress, have we said: Thy will be done. (Matthew 26: 42.) James taught that our plans should always include the thought... if the Lord wills. (James 4: 15.) I am confident that our lives would be much improved if we would only let the Lord s will prevail. The tragedy of the day is the fact that we neglect and forget the teachings of Jesus Christ when we set out to buy and sell and get gain. (James 4: 13.) No wonder we are perplexed! No wonder so many people are mental cases! Conversely, the devoted Christian has a beautiful life one that enriches the environment about him. In life he influences his neighbors to obey the Lord. In death he has calm assurance of the eternal. Home for the righteous. Why? Because he learned how to gain the peace of God... That passeth understanding. (Philippians 4: 7.) How? By obeying the commands of Christ, by trusting in his promises, and by walking humbly, sincerely and diligently in the Master s steps. (1 Peter 2: 21.) Gospel Advocate May 8, 1958

Worship The church of Christ holds the bible as our only guide to our lives. Certainly, rightly dividing the word of truth is central to the Christian life. Worship of God is not about us, it is all about God. John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. Of the truths expressed in this passage none is greater or more profound than God is Spirit. The true worshippers must realize this in order to render acceptable worship unto God. In today s culture, spirit is often equated with sporting event or some sort of entertainment. The one who cheers the loudest or claps the longest has spirit. As a result spirit is to often thought to be enthusiasm expressed. Yet God is more than simple emotions let free, and our worship must be more than that as well. God is everywhere, all the time. He is all knowing and all powerful. His righteousness can not be compared and His love is immeasurable. Equally when we worship God it must be with all we are and as He sees fit. In the articles to come we will explore honest, sincere worship of God. Suffice it here to say, our worship must be acceptable to God or it is simply entertainment to man.
