1 Name: Form: 4A-D Latin Examination Term IV 2012 /100 marks 2 Hours INSTRUCTIONS. Do Questions 1 & 2 on the lined paper supplied. Do Question 3 on the exam paper, and hand in BOTH the exam paper AND the lined refill at the end of the exam. Make sure your NAME and FORM are at the top of ALL pages. QUESTION ONE: PREPARED TRANSLATION Translate the following passages into good English.
2 QUESTION TWO: UNPREPARED TRANSLATION [25 marks] Translate the following passage into good English. Regular vocabulary is provided in the attached NCEA Vocabulary List, with specific words listed beneath the passage. HANNIBAL REACHES ITALY After reaching the summit of the Alps, Hannibal and his army begin to make their way down the treacherous mountain tracks to Italy. Locus, jam natura praeceps, recenti lapsu terrae abruptus erat in altitudinem mille pedum. Once camp was pitched on the ridge, men were sent to clear away the snow and to construct a road. To cut through the rock, the soldiers first built an enormous fire to heat the rocks, and then poured vinegar on them, causing them to disintegrate. A passage was made and a zigzag road constructed to lessen the steepness of the descent. Hannibal, cum Rhodanum transiisset, triginta sex milia hominum ingentemque numerum equorum et aliorum jumentorum amiserat. ascensus, us M., way up, ascent ferme ( adv.), almost, nearly lubricus, a, um slippery Poeni, orum M. pl., the Carthaginians lapsus, us M., slipping, slide alii super alios one on top of the other occido, ere, occidi, occasum fall down Hannibal, Hannibalis M., Hannibal (a general of Carthage) abrumpo, ere, abrupi, abruptum shear off, cut off altitudo, altitudinis F., depth consisto, ere, constiti halt, stop invius, a, um impassable jumentum, i N., pack- beast elephantus, i M., elephant deduco, ere, deduxi, deductum lead down, guide down consumo, ere, consumpsi, consumptum spend, use up prope ( adv.), nearly inferior, ior, ius lower Carthago Nova, Carthaginis Novae F., New Carthage (a city in Spain) Alpes, Alpium F. pl., the Alps Rhodanus, i M., the Rhône River 2.

Regular vocabulary is provided in the attached NCEA Vocabulary List, with specific words listed beneath the passage. HANNIBAL REACHES ITALY Having warded off all attacks from the unfriendly Gauls, Hannibal s army finally reaches the peaks of the Alps, and they gaze down upon the country they intend to conquer before descending the mountain passes. Dixit eos tum transcendere moenia non solum Italiae sed etiam urbis Romae; cetera itinera aut plana aut procliva futura esse; eos caput Italiae in potestate mox habituros esse. aggredior, i, aggressus sum attack, assault Hannibal, Hannibalis M., Hannibal (a general of Carthage) jungo, ere, junxi, junctum join, reunite angustiae, arum F. pl., (mountain) pass elephantus, i M., elephant lente (adv.), slowly montanus, i M., mountaineer jugum, i N., (mountain) ridge Alpes, Alpium F. pl., the Alps Poeni, orum M. pl., the Carthaginians jumentum, i N., pack- beast prolabor, i, prolapsus sum slip down, fall sequendo by following vestigium, i N., footprint, track, trace nix, nivis F., snow terror, terroris M., fright adjicio, ere, adjeci, adjectum add, cast on, cause signa movere to break camp, shift camp desperatio, desperationis F., despair vultus, us M., face, expression promontorium, i N., outcrop, bluff consisto, ere, constiti halt, stop prospectus, us M., view Alpinus, a, um Alpine subjectus, a, um lying at the foot of (+ dat.) transcendo, ere, transcendi, transcensum climb, scale moenia, moenium N. pl., fortifications planus, a, um level proclivus, a, um downhill 9.
