6 MONA STRICK Dear Friends, This is the season of transition. May and June are filled with graduations and weddingsendings and beginnings. We too are approaching the end of our time together as I complete my year-long Rabbinic internship at Temple B nai Shalom on June 2. We have travelled the year cycle together the High Holidays, festivals and Shabbatot. We celebrated the joys of Chanukah and Purim together and have shared our stories with each other. Please accept my gratitude for welcoming me into this very caring community and supporting my learning as I head towards ordination next year. I greatly value the relationships that have developed and will miss being a part of the TBS family. It is traditional to recite the traveler s prayers before starting on a new journey. May it be Your will Adonai, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace. May You rescue us from the hand of every foe and from all difficulties. May You send blessings in our handiwork and grand us grace, kindness, and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us. May You hear the sound of our humble request. Blessed are You, Adonai who hears prayers. for life May the coming year be filled with good health, peace and loving kindness. May Temple B nai Shalom wand those who work hard to support the community go from strength to strength. Shalom u vracha Peace and Blessing Mona Strick, Rabbinic Intern Hebrew College 2019

8 Shalom, Message from the Temple President down from the board. We thank them for their many, many years of service and contributions to Temple B nai Shalom while serving on the board. We welcome Barry Rabinovitz as a new director on the board. Thanks also to David Flaherty for all the odds and ends he continues to do for us at the temple and for his work with the Men s Club. Finally, our Religious School continues to thrive under the leadership of Solomon Borocov and Cantor Seth Grossman. Thank you, Solomon and Seth. I hope everyone is well as we have almost completed another year. On Sunday, May 6 we held our congregational meeting in which officers and directors were elected for the year. Our new board was installed on May 19. You can find the listing of new board members in this bulletin. In addition, the congregation voted to hire Rabbi Ma ayan Sands to lead us in the High Holiday Services this year. Rabbi Sands was ordained as a rabbi in May, She is graduate of Brown University and Hebrew College and has served as a family educator in a variety of settings including 10 years as the Education Director for the Boston-area Jewish Education Program. She also serves as a visiting Rabbi for Congregation Mishkan Tefilla in Brookline. We welcome Rabbi Sands to Temple B nai Shalom and look forward to her leading us for the High Holidays. Our rabbinic intern, Mona Strick will be completing her fifth year at Hebrew College in the fall with a rabbinic internship at Temple Emanu-el in Haverhill. We want to express our sincere appreciation for her leadership this past year and wish her the very best as she completes her last year at Hebrew College on her way to being ordained as a rabbi. We will be holding a special Kiddush in her honor on Saturday, June 2, following services. Congratulations to Judy Karll. She was this year s recipient of the President s Award for her work putting out the quarterly bulletin and serving as our social action representative. Each edition of the bulletin becomes better and better. Thank you, Judy, for taking on this important vehicle for communication to our congregants and doing such a wonderful job with it. Judy also coordinates the food donations that go to the food pantry in Braintree as well as Mitzvah Day for our Hebrew School students. I would like to express sincere appreciation to those individuals who served as officers and directors of the temple this past year as well as the committee chairs who have played an integral part in so many of the activities and events held. Thanks go to the following board members: Barry Belt, Michael Caplan, Marylou Fishman, Janice Fine, Meryl Smith, Paula Goldman, Sandie Baler-Segal, Cheryl Berman, Solomon Borocov, Richard Salloway, Florence Koffman, Arline Goodman, Jo Salloway, Steve Karll, Judy Karll, Gail Lerner, Audrey Mallock, Liz Bloom and Paul Rubin. A special thanks go to Barry Belt, Arline Goodman and Florence Koffman who have decided to step A special thank you, again, to our Sisterhood volunteers who prepare the Kiddush for us every Shabbat and for our Men s Club volunteers who prepare breakfast for our special events throughout the year. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated and critical to the success of our congregation. Thank you! This year was another active year for our temple. We continue to be fortunate to have so many of our congregants participating in various activities; whether it be Shabbat services, social functions, helping with rummage, Hebrew school or visiting our web-site. If you have not visited our web-site recently, go to I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It has updates throughout the year. Special thanks to Gail Lerner for continuing to spearhead this project and to Evelyn Schichner for hosting our web-site. In closing, I look forward to serving as your president for the upcoming year. I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to become more involved with your shul. You can do so in many ways without a great deal of effort. If you have not attended any or many functions at the temple this past year, consider participating more this coming year. Consider coming to temple a few more times during the year beyond the High Holidays. Do you have a yahrzeit coming up or a special occasion that you would like to acknowledge? Sponsor a Kiddush and come to temple. We can always use some assistance in the kitchen on Saturday mornings for our Kiddush. Even if you can only spare an hour, we can use you. Contact Paula Goldman at paulag@beld.net for more information. As always, I want to thank Marylou Fishman for all of her assistance this year. She continues to work as hard as past president as she did as president. Wishing you all the very best in the summer months ahead Peter Kurzberg Dates to Calendar June 2 Shabbat Kiddush in honor of Mona Strick

14 DO YOU OR ANY OF YOU FAMILY SHOP ON AMAZON.COM Thanks to congregants who shop on AMAZON.COM, Temple B nai Shalom receives a check for a percentage of their sales each month from Amazon. Next time you have something to order: Go to The Temple s Website: Click on: GIVING Click on: SHOPPING OPPORTUNITIES National Refugee Shabbat 2018, which falls on October 19th-20th, is a moment for congregations, organizations, and individuals around the country to create a Shabbat experience dedicated to refugees. The parsha (Torah portion) for this shabbat is Lech Lecha, which describes the beginning of the experience of wandering in search of freedom for the Jewish people. This makes it a particularly meaningful opportunity to deepen our understanding of today s global refugee crisis, connect with the Jewish movement for refugees, commit (or recommit) to taking action, and either celebrate your community s achievements in working with refugees or launch new efforts. WHY NOW? We are witnesses to one of the largest humanitarian crises in human history. There are now more than 65 million people who have fled their homes due to persecution and violence. And, yet, in this moment of unprecedented need, our government is grinding the U.S. refugee admissions program to a halt and cutting humanitarian aid. This year, the United States is poised to admit tens of thousands fewer refugees than in years past. The Jewish movement for refugees in the U.S. has grown exponentially since with individuals, congregations, and organizations volunteering, raising awareness, and advocating for refugees around the country and the world. The involvement of our community has made a difference. This is a moment when we must give voice to our values as Jews and as Americans and stand up for the safety and the lives of people around the world. National Refugee Shabbat will take place just after the expected announcement of the Presidential Determination - the cap on refugee admissions for the coming year - and just before the 2018 midterm elections. It is the perfect moment to raise awareness in our community, to recognize the work that has been done, and to reaffirm our commitment to welcoming refugees. WHAT DOES PARTICIPATION ENTAIL? Your participation in National Refugee Shabbat can be as multifaceted as you would like it to be for your community. It could be the culmination of a week of action on refugee issues, a moment to simply focus on learning more about the global refugee crisis in a Jewish context, or an opportunity to convene Jewish (or interfaith) congregations to learn and chart a course of action together. The choice is yours. WHAT WILL HIAS PROVIDE? Whether you signed up to participate on behalf of your congregation or as an individual hosting an
15 event in your home, there are a number of options for what your National Refugee Shabbat could look like. For congregations, you might consider including a liturgical reading on the theme of the refugee crisis in Shabbat services and/or dedicating a sermon or text study to the topic. If you have a relationship with a refugee or refugee professional in your local community, consider inviting that person to speak during services. In addition, you might plan a Shabbat dinner program after Friday evening services or a Shabbat lunch program after Saturday morning services. For those in major metropolitan areas with many congregations working on refugee issues together, we recommend considering coming together for Havdalah and a post-havdalah program, which will allow you to partner with one another on a larger program and explore programming options with which you might not feel comfortable on Shabbat (e.g., writing, video). In preparation for the 2018 midterm elections, consider inviting local candidates to attend any event you plan as part of the Shabbat. For individuals and congregations alike, at the beginning of August 2018, HIAS will provide a Content Resource Guide that may be helpful as you build out your programming. The Content Resource Guide will include several programmatic modules: an outline for a chamber music concert including compositions from Jewish and contemporary refugees a conversational guide for the movie "Human Flow" a workshop on having difficult conversations that uses refugee stories to address specific antirefugee sentiments an advocacy session that will guide you through personal and communal story telling that can be used in in-district meetings Most relevant to congregations - though, of course, available to everyone - the Content Resource will also include a liturgical reading, sermon talking points, and a text study. options would be the most appealing to you and/or your community. Congregations and organizations may also want to begin identifying possible community partners (e.g., other synagogues, local organizations, etc.) and procuring the right space for the program. NATIONAL CO-SPONSORS Academy for Jewish Religion (AJR) American Jewish Committee (AJC) Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) The Rabbinical Assembly (RA) Reconstructing Judaism Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (RRA) T'ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ) TEMPLE B NAI SHALOM will keep you aware of the where the NATIONAL REFUGEE SHABBAT / HIAS services will be held.
