1 THE SANDUSKY MASONIC E-BULLETIN This is Volume 1, Issue 1, of the Sandusky Masonic Temple E-Bulletin. The Bulletin is a function of the Temple Library and has been created to dispense Masonic Light to all. I am Br. Larry Camp, Librarian of The Masonic Temple Association Company of Sandusky and Science Lodge No. 50. In addition to editing the Bulletin, I am in the process of inventorying the Temple Library and Dr. Charles Hope Merz s (Past Master, Science, 1912) books and personal papers. I will soon have a complete inventory and will begin the process of instituting a lending Library for the those who are members of the Bodies who meet in the Temple. Another of my functions will be to keep in contact with the Masonic libraries around the VOLUME I. AD 2012/AL 6012 /YT 123 N O. 1. world, staying up to date on all new Masonic publications and pamphlets, and acquiring the best of them for our Library. It is important that we keep up with the newly released literature, both on Masonic Thought and History. Much research is going on that will help the Brothers understand who and what we are. The E-Bulletin Mission and Purpose: To dispense Masonic Light to all Freemasons wherever they may be, bringing light to Freemasonry and the Brothers and assisting them in accomplishing the promise of the Fraternity by helping good men to become better men. Not just members of bodies meeting in the Sandusky Masonic Temple. We have very far reaching goals. On an ad hoc schedule we will gather the best of a few previous issues and bulk mail to those who do not have internet access. We will also need your help in compiling this address list. 2 ANNO LUCIUS: THE YEAR OF LIGHT Anno Lucis is Latin for "Year of Light." You will also see it abbreviated as "A.L." It is used as a calendar system within the Masonic fraternity. Year of Light refers to the biblical account of the creation of the universe wherein God spoke and said: "Let there be light,...and there was light." (Genesis 1:3) You will often see the abbreviation "A.L." on Masonic certificates, plaques and building cornerstones. This calendar system is not exclusive to Freemasonry. It was designed as a simplification of the Anno Mundi calendar by an Irish cleric, James Ussher ( ) nearly a century before the formation of the United Grand Lodge of England in Ussher established the year 4004 B.C. (approximately 6013 years ago) as the date of the biblical creation of the Earth. So why does Anno Lucis add 4000 years to the current year? First, a short refresher primer on B.C.,/B.C.E., C.E./A.D. and A.M. B.C./B.C.E.: Before the Christian Era: ly sure of the exact date of his birth.) C.E./A.D.: Anno Domini: "In the Year of our Lord" Some people remember "A.D." as "After Death", however A.D. is Latin for Anno Domini, which means "In the Year of our Lord" (referring to Jesus Christ). In Latin, the base word, "domus" means house, so, technically Anno Domini means In the Year of our House in the Lord". Due to the obvious Christian overtones associated with the term "A.D., many scholars prefer to use more nonsecular abbreviations like C.E. to denote the "Common Era." A.M.: Anno Mundi: "In the Year of the World" Based on rabbinic calculations, A.M. (Anno Mundi) is the date of the year of God's creation of the world. Since about the 9th century, various dates have been advanced by Jewish scholars. The current date which is generally accepted within Judaism is October 7, 3761 B.C. This date is based on calculations performed by Rabbis using the book of Genesis to calculate genealogy mentioned in Genesis and then to add the time that has elapsed since Genesis was written. Most notably, the calculations are based upon the Seder Olam Rabbah of Rabbi Yose Ben Halafta in the second century C.E. (Common Era.) Anno Lucis: Determining the Year of Light Hebrew Calendar: The Hebrew calendar is based upon the Torah (the 5 Books of Moses) which contains several calendarrelated commandments, one of which is God's commandment during the Exodus from Egypt to affix the month of Aviv as the Some people remember "B.C." as "Before Christ", which is somewhat appropriate, if not totally politically correct. B.C.E. is also known as "Before Common Era." B.C.E. denotes the years before the Christian Era/ Common Era. The beginning of the Christian Era is the date when Christ was assumed to have been born. (I say "assumed", here because not all religions embrace his birth in their religious belief system and because biblical scholars are not completefirst month of the year. Therefore, it is interesting to note that our current Gregorian calendar in use, today is different from the Hebrew calendar as related in the Torah (known to Christians as part of the Old Testament.) Those of the Jewish faith conform to the Gregorian calendar and its use as a "civil calendar" (used to denote days of work and other dates.) They use the Hebrew calendar to celebrate religious festivals as set out in the Torah. According to the original Hebrew calendar, the year 2009 (after Rosh Hashanah in September) would be the year ( ) Julian Calendar - 46 B.C.: We currently use a form of the Julian Calendar. It was a solar calendar introduced by Julius Caesar in Rome in 46 B.C. It was slightly modified by Augustus. It established our current 12- month year of 365 days with each 4th year having 366 days and delineates the months having 31 or 30 days except for February. Each 4th year is called a Leap Year because we add one more day in February. Gregorian calendar A.D. to Present: The Gregorian calendar is the solar calendar in general use, today. The need for the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar came about because a year is not exactly 365 days long. It is actually 365 and a quarter days long. The Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to correct an error in the Julian calendar by suppressing (omitting) 10 days, which incorrectly made October 5th be designated as October 15th, and it provided that only centenary years (years divisible by 100) which were also divisible by 400 should be leap years. 1752: The Gregorian calendar was adopted by Great Britain and the American colonies in "Anno Lucis" - A.G. Mackey Albert Mackey, Freemason historian, in his Revised Encyclopedia of Freemasonry published in 1920 describes Anno Lucis as follows: Anno Lucis: "The date used in ancient Craft Masonry; found by adding 4000 to the Vulgar Era; thus, = Anno Mundi: In the Year of the World. The date used in the Ancient and Accepted Rite; found by adding 3760 to the Vulgar Era until September. After September, add one year more; this is because the year used is the Hebrew one, which begins in September. Thus, July, = 5771, and October, = 5672." Note: The "Vulgar" era which Dr. Mackey describes is what we now call our current year. Vulgar is defined as lacking quality, taste or refinement. -- Ed. 3 THE YEAR OF THE TEMPLE: YT 123 AND ST JOHN S DAY 1889 Yes, this is just what I said. This begins the Year of the Temple, 123. What is the Year of the Temple, you ask? Well, in the Year 1889 A.D., on the 24th day of June, which was and is St. John s Day, the Cornerstone of our beautiful Sandusky Masonic Temple was laid in a Ceremony, which an article from the Sandusky Daily Register from 1889 will describe in full below... But first a description of the dating we are using in the Bulletin. If we take the date of 2012 and simply subtract the year 1889 from it, we get the number 123. From a Masonic standpoint, this just makes good old fashioned Common Sense. The first Three Degrees of Freemasonry. Right? Nothing too deep in that, though there could be, trust me. So for now, suffice it to say, it is YT 123, beginning on St. John s Day! Remember, until then, its still YT 122. Mark your calendars, mobile phones and computers, too! Indeed, our Corner Stone was laid in quite an elaborate ceremony on St John s Day This story appeared in the Sandusky Daily Register, that very day: Setting the Cornerstone June 24, 1889: Mason s Day Preparing to lay the cornerstone of the temple. An immense concourse of masons to be present. The order of procession and line of March. The ceremonies incident to the laying of the cornerstone of the Masonic temple now in course of construction here will bring to this city today a large number of Masons from various portions of the state. The committee on invitation informs us that the following lodges will be present: Mt Vernon and Norwalk Lodges, of Norwalk; Bellevue Lodge, of Bellevue; Erie Lodge, of Milan; Fort Stevenson Lodge, of Fremont; West Toledo Lodge, of West Toledo; Marks Lodge, of Huron;, Gibson Lodge, of Birmingham; Rubicon Lodge, of Toledo; East Townsend Lodge, of East Townsend; Tiffin Lodge, of Tiffin; and Perry Lodge, of Port Clinton. Delegations of Master masons will be present form Forest City, Cleveland, and Woodward Lodges, of Cleveland; and Findlay lodge, of Findlay. The following Commanderies of Knights Templar will be present: Toledo, of Toledo; Shawnee, of Lima; Mansfield, of Mansfield; and Rapier, of Urbana. Delegations will be present from Oriental, DeMolay, Norwalk, St. Luke s and Holyrood Commanderies. There will also be present nine officers of the Grand Lodge, seven of the present officers of the Grand Commandery, five Past Grand officers of the Grand lodge, and four Past Grand officers of the Grand Commandery. Lodges, Commanderies, and delegations will arrive here Monday as follows: On the regular train from Norwalk, Mt Vernon, Mansfield, Norwalk, and Monroeville at 8 o clock a.m. standard time; from Urbana, Findlay, Tiffin, and Clyde, at 7:45 a.m. ; from Cleveland, Elyria, Vermillion, and Huron, 7:52a.m.; from Oak Harbor and Port Clinton, at 7:22 a. m. A special train from Toledo will reach this city by way of Clyde on the I. B. & W. railroad at 9:52 a.m. city time, stopping at the foot of Columbus Avenue. The procession will move West on Water Street to Jackson, South on Jackson to Washington Street through the park to Wayne Street; returning the column will move to the corner of Market Street and Columbus Avenue and disband in front of Masonic hall. Assignments The following assignments have been made by the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge to serve on the occasion of the laying of the cornerstone: Bro. Leopold Monat, to present to Grand Master the trowel. Bro. T. L. Williams, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity of Sandusky, to extend invitation to the Grand Master to lay the corner stone. Bro. D. R. Arnold, in charge of the box or casket to be deposited in the corner Stone. Bro. Lindsley, with Bro Geo Feick as substitute, to present the working tools to the Grand Master. Clapp, Grand Junior Deacon; Jacob Randall, Grand Tyler; Barton Smith, Grand Orator. Notes and Comments The contract for the Masonic Temple Was let to A. Feick & Brother of this city, George Feick, a prominent Mason having direct charge of the work. The foundation was laid last fall and work on the superstructure begun as soon as weather permitted last spring, and it is expected that the building will be ready for use by January next. The well known reliability of the contractors is a guarantee that the building will be even better than the contract calls for if faithfulness on their part can make it so. The street front is of buff round stone body and blue sand-stone trimmings. The rear and unexposed side wall are of blue lime stone rough work. There will be four stores on the ground floor over roomy basements; the second floor will be divided into office rooms, and room for the janitor and the third floor will be used exclusively by the Masonic bodies. The total cost of the ground and structure will be between $52,000 and $55,000. The building will be heated by steam and furnished with water on all floors and convenient to all parts of the building. The trustees in charge of the Association are L. Monet, I.F. Mack, C. F. Schoepfle, R. E. Schuck, T. L. Williams, John C. Zollinger, L. W. Lewis, and L. M. Lea. The immediate supervision of the building is entrusted to C. F. Schoepfle, T. L. Williams, and I.F. Mack, the building committee. The association owns in fee simple the site which is 100 feet front on Wayne Street and 120 feet on Washington Street. A special train on the Lake Erie & Western will arrive this morning at 9 o clock with Shawnee Commandery of Lima and Fostoria Lodge. Visiting brethren will be entertained at lunch by the ladies at Masonic Hall. It is expected that the visiting Masons will spend the greater part of the afternoon at Cedar Point. The Mansfield Band will accompany the Mansfield Commandery to the Point and the Great Western Band will give an afternoon concert there. Templar headquarters will be at Armory hall. Mansfield Commandery will be accompanied by the Mansfield Band. A stand to be occupied by the officers of the ceremonies has been erected, fronting on Wayne Street. Seats will be provided near the speakers stand for the ladies who accompany visiting Masons to this city. Mr. Leander Burdick, of Toledo, Most Worshipful Grand Master and Mr. Jacob Randall, of Marysville, Grand Tyler, are at the Sloane House. A popular place for our Masonic brethren today will be on the square. Mansfield Commandery K. T. will be accompanied by the American Military Band of that city, one of the finest bands in Ohio. The contractor of the temple desires us to say that no one will be allowed into the building except the officers in charge of the ceremonies. It is the special request of the committee in charge that Washington Street through the Park be free from vehicles and sight-seers during the parade. Policemen will be stationed at the intersections to keep the crowd back from the street. (Sandusky Daily Register June ) Ed Note: One can see the importance of Freemasonry in Sandusky in 1889! 5 FAMOUS SANDUSKY FREEMASONS By Brother Chris Keller, Temple Historian Science Lodge No. 50 Voltaire Scott was born in Buffalo, New York in 1834, to Jacob and Margaret Scott. In the HISTORY OF ERIE COUNTY, edited by Lewis Cass Aldrich, we read that the Scott family settled in Put in Bay in They moved to Port Clinton, and eventually settled in Sandusky. In 1865, Voltaire Scott and his father purchased a hotel in Sandusky, at the southwest corner of Water and Wayne Streets. Across the street from the hotel was Scott's Park. He worked to improve it by making it level with Water Street and accessible by steps on the other sides. In the center, he erected a pedestal of tufa rock, planted grass, shrubs and trees and laid sidewalks, all at his own expense under the supervision of the Park Superintendent. On the pedestal, Scott placed the statue of the Boy with the Boot, which was cast by J.W. Fiske Ironworks in NYC. Four other statues were installed, including water spouting dolphins and maids of the mist. Goldfish swam in the pond. In the evenings, Scott Park was illuminated by colored lights strung overhead and placed beneath the water, lighted fountains being a fairly new innovation at the time. Voltaire Scott willed the contents of his park to the city, along with funds to maintain it. However, in 1924, the park was severely damaged by the tornado, and the statues were stored in the city greenhouse. In 1935, Scott Park was leveled and turned into a parking lot and the Boy with the Boot was given a new home in Washington Park. The statue was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in On August 24, 1899, Voltaire Scott passed away. He willed the contents of Scott's Park to the city of Sandusky. Scott's Park was damaged in the 1924 tornado, and the Boy with the Boot was stored at the city's greenhouse. In 1935, the area occupied by Scott Park became a parking lot and the Boy with the Boot moved to Washington Park in front of the Erie County Courthouse. During the 1990's, the original Boy with the Boot was vandalized. The original statue is now on display at the City Building. Washington Park now features a replica of the original Boy with the Boot statue - Perseverance Lodge No. 329 DANIEL HOFFMAN, Sandusky, was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1841, and was a son of Peter and Maggie Hoffman. Daniel came to America in 1866, and settled in Sandusky. His sister Catherine came with him, and in 1867 another sister, Elizabeth, also came. Mr. Hoffman was a stone mason and builder by trade, and soon commenced business as a contractor. He retired from this business in 1883, and became engaged in the wood business, and in 1885 went into the coal business. He was married in 1867 to Philopena Fuchs, who was born in Bavaria, and came to Sandusky with Mr. Hoffman's sister, Elizabeth, in They have had a family of nine children: Charles, Frederick, Mary, Magdalena, Mena, Lizzie, Daniel, jr., William and John 5 Beginning as Hoffman Coal and Milling Co., the Hoffman Coal Company served the Sandusky area for sixty-five years. In the 1890 city directory, Daniel Hoffman advertised as a dealer in coal and wood at the corner of Scott and Hancock Streets. Later he also sold feed and grain. Daniel s sons Charles J. and William H. Hoffman took over the business when Daniel retired. Brothers Fred and Daniel Hoffman, Jr. were also associated with the family coal business through the years. Charles and William Hoffman also owned the Electric Glass Cleaner C o m p a n y i n S a n d u s k y. Charles J. Hoffman obtained a patent in 1901 for an elevating truck. The Sandusky Evening Star of August 31, 1903 stated that the handy combination truck is said to be a fine device, combining all the requirements of elevator, store, mill and warehouse trucks. This truck is featured prominently in an advertisement for his company, in the 1903 publication What (which also features stereotypes of the era). The Hoffman family was well known in the Sandusky area. Charles J. Hoffman ran an ice cream and sandwich shop on Scott Street in the 1920 s and 1930 s. The figure Puck was located at this site. Carlyle Hoffman grandson of Daniel Hoffman, Sr, was a lawyer with the Veterans Administration in Cleveland for many years, and granddaughter Dr. Kathryn E. Hoffman was a physician and surgeon in Cleveland. Daniel Hoffman Sr. with his five sons on their Masonic Induction Evening. (Perseverance 329).

6 Sandusky Masonic Temple: Member Body News Sandusky Masonic Temple Events July 4 - Independence Day Temple Open House Celebration 10am- 2pm. Please contact us to help out! July 14 - MORI training session for all Secretary's in the 16th Masonic District starting at registration with coffee and doughnuts from 8 til 9am. The session will start with a beginners session for new Secretaries followed by Lunch - and a more advanced Session after lunch. WB Fred Hocking will be doing the MORI training and WB Rodney Zerkle will also speak on the duties of the Lodge Secretary. There will be plenty of opportunities to answer questions. All are invited to bring a laptop or notepad with them as we will have Internet connection available for that day. There will be a $10 charge to defray the cost of lunch and Internet service. It can be paid at the time of registration. Science Lodge 50 On May 28, we were honored to host our annual Past Masters of Science Lodge. Other notable events from the evening: Brother Jack Doller was presented West of the Altar and received his 50 Year Pin. Brother Larry E Camp was escorted West of the Altar and Installed the Librarian of the Lodge and of the Sandusky Masonic Temple. Brother Christopher Keller was Installed the Historian for the Lodge and of the Sandusky Masonic Temple. On Monday, June 4th, Science Lodge 50 held its annual Strawberry Night, as it is the last night of Lodge before going Dark for the Summer. A special Masonic Funeral Ceremony was held for WB Wilbert Deal (please see the Masonic Tidings at the end of the issue). 7 Sandusky, Ohio: Masonic Town USA It should come as no great shock to anyone reading this, that the layout of our fine town was planned - platted, if you will, in the obviously Masonic Square and Compasses (or the Square of Virtue). Yes, it is quite true. As you will find out more and more in the upcoming issues of this E- Bulletin, Sandusky, Ohio has a fantastic Masonic History that is far more than a simple (yet complex) town layout. Our recently Installed Temple (and Science Lodge 50) Historian, Brother Chris Keller, will be taking us on an absolutely fascinating tour of the historical roots not only of our Temple, but of Sandusky itself - and the famous Masons who built it. Yes, they were true Builders. So when you read this publication, please know that you are reading history as it unfolds. People in the fair city of Sandusky do not even understand their own history.
