St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Choral Eucharist with Baptism and Confirmation The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost 10 September pm WELCOME Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, the home for worshippers from more than two dozen nations, the seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia and the home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. We are delighted that you are with us this evening: come and worship with us again. A very warm welcome to Bishop Philip Huggins, administering Confirmation this evening, and to relatives and friends of the candidates Alicia Chan, Dominique Djurovitch, Star Evans, Isabel Luscott, Charlotte Sita. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation, and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. Please join us in singing the hymns and saying those parts of the service printed in bold type. Please ensure that mobile phones and other devices are switched off. GATHERING IN GOD S NAME THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN Sung by all, standing.

2 There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze and trembling to its source return, in humble prayer and fervent praise. THE GREETING The Dean greets the people 3 Jesus, confirm my heart s desire to work, and speak, and think for thee; still let me guard the holy fire, and still stir up thy gift in me, 4 ready for all thy perfect will, my acts of faith and love repeat, till death thy endless mercies seal, and make the sacrifice complete. Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit: Blessed be God s Kingdom, now and forever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Charles Wesley ( ) Australian Hymn Book 486i THE COLLECT FOR PURITY Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The people are seated or kneel. THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION The Kyrie eleison is sung by all Matthias, Festive Mass 2

A minister says This is a true saying and worthy of all acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Let us turn to God in sorrow for our sins knowing that angels rejoice at our repentance. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Bishop assures the people of God s forgiveness Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand HYMN OF PRAISE Matthias, Festive Mass Please join the Choir in the response as indicated Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. 3 Response. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the word: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. Response. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Let us pray. Response. Undaunted you seek the lost, O God, exultant you bring home the found: touch our hearts with grateful wonder at the tenderness of your forbearing love; grant us delight in the mercy that has found us; and bring all to rejoice at the feast of forgiven sinners. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people are seated for the readings and psalm. THE FIRST READING 2 Samuel 23 : 1-4 Tim James 1Now these are the last words of David:The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, * the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favourite of the Strong One of Israel: 2 The spirit of the Lord speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. 3 The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, 4 is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. PSALM 149 : 1-5 Chant: Anthony Gregory Murray ( ) Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated 1 O praise the Lord, and sing to the Lord a new song: O praise him in the assembly of the faithful. 2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their king. 3 Let them praise him in the dance: let them sing his praise with timbrel and with harp. Response 4 For the Lord takes delight in his people: he adorns the meek with his salvation. 5 Let his faithful ones exult in his glory: let them sing for joy upon their beds. 4 Response Music: Richard Proulx ( ) Reproduced from Together in Song 71 with permission THE SECOND READING 1 John 5 : 1-6 Canon Michael Shand QC 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the

victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5 Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God. The people stand to sing and remain standing for the Gospel. THE GRADUAL HYMN 2 King, whose name creation thrills, rule our minds, our hearts, our wills, till in peace each nation rings with their praises, King of kings. Angels, saints and nations sing... 3 King most holy, King of truth, guide the lowly, guide the youth; Christ thou King of glory bright, be to us eternal light. Angels, saints and nations sing... 4 Shepherd-king, o er mountains steep, homeward bring the wandering sheep; shelter in one royal fold states and kingdoms, new and old. Angels, saints and nations sing... Patrick Brennan ( ) Australian Hymn Book 188. Reproduced with permission 5

THE HOLY GOSPEL St John 15 : 9-17 The cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat. Alleluia! Alleluia! May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our heart, that we may see how great is the hope to which we are called. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 9As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. THE SERMON Silence may be kept. The people stand to sing. The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe Dean of Melbourne 6

THE BAPTISM HYMN During the hymn, the clergy and candidates process along the centre aisle to the baptistery near the entry to the Cathedral. The congregation is invited to follow. The candidates stand before the Bishop. 2 O let it freely burn till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3 Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace till we become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Bianco da Siena (d.1434), tr. Richard Frederick Littledale ( ) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 156i THE BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION We welcome you who have come to be baptised and/or confirmed. I ask that you now introduce yourselves to the congregation. Each candidate answers in turn: My name is NAME. I ask to be BAPTISED/BAPTISED AND CONFIRMED into the fellowship of the Anglican Church. Before you are baptised and/or confirmed you must affirm before God and this congregation your allegiance to Christ and rejection of all that is evil. And so I ask: do you turn to Christ? 7

Each candidate answers in turn: I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? The Candidates respond together: I repent of my sins. Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? I reject them all. Do you renounce Satan and all evil? I renounce all that is evil. Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, and lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. Amen. Will you each, by God's grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life s end? I will with God's help. The Bishop addresses the congregation You have heard these our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? Congregation: We will. THE BLESSING OF THE WATER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Almighty God, we give you thanks that you have called these your servants to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that those who are baptised in it may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May they die to sin, rise to newness of life and continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we give you praise and honour in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. THE APOSTLES CREED Let us all affirm as our own the faith of the Church: Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? 8

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE BAPTISM Candidates for baptism come to the Font. Pouring water on each candidate in turn, the Bishop says: Name, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE RITE OF CONFIRMATION The Candidates for Confirmation stand before the Bishop, who prays for them: Our help is in the name of the Lord: who made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord: now, and for ever. Amen. Almighty and everliving God you have given your servants new birth by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them their sins. Strengthen them, we pray, with the Holy Spirit that they may grow in grace. Increase in them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of discernment and inner strength, the spirit of knowledge and true godliness, and fill them with wonder and awe in your presence through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Bishop lays hands on each candidate saying: Strengthen, Lord, your servant Name with your Holy Spirit. Empower and sustain him/her for your service. Amen. Anointing the newly confirmed person with the sign of the cross using the Oil of Chrism, the Bishop says: Name, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit and marked as Christ s own for ever. 9

When all have received the laying on of hands and anointing the Bishop addresses them as a group, saying: Live as disciples of Christ: fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. God has called you into his Church: We therefore receive and welcome you as members of the body of Christ, as children of the one heavenly Father, and as inheritors with us of the kingdom of God. All candidates then receive a lighted candle. The Bishop says: God gives you his light that you may grow in wisdom and strength. Shine as lights in the world to the glory of God the Father. The candidates are each given a copy of the Scriptures. To keep you ever mindful of Gospel of Christ we present you with a copy of the Holy Scriptures, Here is true wisdom; these are the words of eternal life. THE GREETING OF PEACE We are the body of Christ. His Spirit us with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace. Return to your seat, and join in singing THE OFFERTORY HYMN During the hymn an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry. Thank you for your gift. The people stand for the hymn, and then remain standing. 10

2 Praise him for his grace and favour to our people in distress; praise him still the same for ever, slow to chide and swift to bless: praise him, praise him, alleluia, glorious in his faithfulness. 3 Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hand he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. praise him, praise him, alleluia, widely as his mercy flows! 4 Frail as summer s flower we flourish, blows the wind and it is gone; but while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on. Praise him, praise him, alleluia, praise the high eternal one! 5 Angels, help us to adore him, ye behold him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space: praise him, praise him, alleluia, praise with us the God of grace Henry Francis Lyte ( ) alt. Australian Hymn Book 68 THE PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS The Dean prays Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation: through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings to your glory and for the service of your kingdom: Blessed be God forever. THE HOLY COMMUNION THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The president offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ, and in response the choir sing: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD Sanctus and Benedictus for ever praising you and singing: Matthias, Festive Mass 11

Choir alone Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Choir alone Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. The president recalls the Last Supper, and a minister introduces the following acclamation Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The prayer continues, and concludes:... in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language, Notre Père..., Padre nuestro..., Vater unser..., 我們在天上的父 Bapa kami..., E to matou Matua..., 天の父よ... Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. 12

O LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei Please join in as indicated. Matthias, Festive Mass Choir alone Grant us peace. THE INVITATION The gifts of God for the people of God. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. All baptised Christians are invited to receive the bread and the wine of the Eucharist. Please tell the priest if you prefer to receive a gluten free wafer or a blessing. Please keep your valuables with you. THE ANTHEM DURING COMMUNION God in such love for us Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) God in such love for us lent us this planet, gave it a purpose in time and in space: small as a spark from the fire of creation, cradle of life and the home of our race. Thanks be to God for its bounty and beauty, life that sustains us in body and mind: plenty for all, if we learn how to share it, riches undreamt of to fathom and find. 13

Long have our human wars ruined its harvest; long has earth bowed to the terror of force; long have we wasted what others have need of, poisoned the fountain of life at its source. Thanks be to God Earth is the Lord s: it is ours to enjoy it, ours, as God s stewards, to farm and defend. From its pollution, misuse, and destruction, good Lord deliver us, world without end. Thanks be to God THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE THE POST-COMMUNION SENTENCE I tell you there is joy in the presence of God over one sinner who repents. Luke All stand while the President prays THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Gracious God, in baptism you make us one family in Christ your Son, one in the sharing of his body and his blood, one in the fellowship of his Spirit. Help us to grow in love for one another and so come to the full maturity of the body of Christ. Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name. Amen. THE DISMISSAL HYMN 14

2 O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, with ever joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us; and keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all ills in this world and the next. 3 All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, the Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven, the One eternal God, whom earth and heav n adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. THE BLESSING Martin Rinkart ( ), tr. Catherine Winkworth ( ) New English Hymnal 413 Go forth into the world in peace; be of good courage; hold fast to that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the faint hearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; give honour to all; love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen. THE DISMISSAL Go in the peace of Christ. Thanks be to God.
