2 Mission Statement Beth Hillel is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue rooted in the ancient traditions of the Torah while growing to meet the changes and challenges of our world. Its core are the many people of different ages and backgrounds who have chosen to make it their spiritual home, joining together for prayer, learning, and celebration. The many branches of Beth Hillel s community provide support to its congregants, reaching out to each other and welcoming our neighbors as together we learn from the past and teach for the future. SOCIAL ACTION Donations of nonperishable food or clothing are always welcome at the synagogue for area food banks! 4 From Rabbi Atkins Desk SUMMER THE VITAL CENTER The idea of community has always been the center of my religious orientation. I remember, even in my 40-year-ago senior sermon at JTS, emphasizing community. As I take on the role of President of the Greater Hartford Rabbinical Association and continue to be active on Federation committees that idea is reinforced each day. Recently Arnold Eisen, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, wrote a most inspirational article on this topic. As good serious summer reading, I share a few excerpts of it with you: I believe that the concept of vital religious center is as relevant in Israel as it is in America.Let me go back 100 years to the moment in 1913 when Solomon Schechter, in effect, made Conservative Judaism a religious movement in America by founding the United Synagogue. He did so with a talk entitled The Work of Heaven In The Work of Heaven, as in other addresses, Schechter regarded religious movements Conservative, Orthodox, or Reform as means to an end, adjectives to a noun: Judaism, which he often called simply Torah. We can derive useful ideas for thinking about the vital religious center from the final pages of a remarkable address that Schechter gave in 1903, The Seminary as Witness. The passage begins with a long account of the many ways in which Rashi and Rambam differed profoundly from one another. What, then, supported the bonds of unity among their students? (1) They both observed the same fasts and feasts ; (2) they both revered the same sacred symbols, though they put different interpretations on them ; (3) they both prayed in the same language, Hebrew; (4) they both were devoted students of the same Torah, though they often differed in its explanation ; (5) they both looked back to Israel s past with admiration and reverence, though Maimonides conception of the Revelation, for instance, largely varied from that of Rashi ; (6) their ultimate hopes centered in the same redemption. In sum, they studied the Torah and lived in accordance with its laws, and both made the hopes of the Jewish nation their own. I have quoted at such length because I find it difficult to improve on Schechter s definition of what unites Jews of the vital religious center despite our differences. That is all the more true because, three years after he gave the Seminary as Witness talk, Schechter made the hopes of the Jewish nation [his] own with his famous statement endorsing Zionism. I am less interested in the question of how Schechter would think about the vital religious center today than about how we should do so. Here, then very briefly, in the most general terms is my sketch of the main principles that define that center. I begin with the concept that I believe is most essential to Judaism covenant and proceed to community/ peoplehood, learning, mitzvah, tefillah, and relations to other peoples and faith communities. So the five major concepts are 1) Covenant including community and peoplehood 2) Learning 3) Mitzvah 4) Tefillah 5) Relations to other faith communities If you d like to read the entire article, either ask me for a copy, or I will share the website address. Continue to enjoy your summer!! Rabbi Gary Atkins Your Rabbi Beth Hillel Chai-Lites Page 4

5 In June, at installation, I presented some reflections on the year that was ending, where we are at this point and some of our needs. As I thought about what to write for this column, it seemed to me that my remarks really should get to most of the Beth Hillel family, not just the core group at installation. Thus they follow, with the hope that they will be read and considered. Last year I observed that as a nurse I am oriented toward trying to heal the sick, and, that being part of my makeup, I was looking forward to the challenges we faced here at Beth Hillel. I unfortunately cannot stand before you and report that we have had success and that all is well. However, as I stand before you Beth Hillel is still alive and, if not healthy, the vital signs are stable and we are active while undergoing treatment. That said, I cannot sugarcoat our condition. The area on which treatment has focused and made the most progress is the diagnosis of our options, which led us to proceed toward the sale of our building with a leaseback of part of it at no rent and just a share of the operating expenses. That treatment, though slow, is progressing, and if the terms come together and our Beth Hillel family consents, it will substantially reduce expenses and be a significant step toward financial health. Also, as you know, with his cooperation, we negotiated with Rabbi Gary for a contract at a significant compensation reduction another step toward financial health. Both of these partial cures come with unhappy side effects, but the treatment is necessary and, with attempts at expense reduction, should prolong our life financially. While on finances, I would be remiss if I did not thank those of our members who have stepped up and generously shared their money by voluntarily increasing dues, Kol Nidre pledges, program ads, general fund donations, and in-kind gifts. Without that support we simply could not survive. Last year a number of members stepped up in our douse the deficit campaign; it worked. Unfortunately, this year we will have to ask again, so please answer the call when it comes. Whether you can spare a lot or just a little, please be a part of the cure. On the people and program front, I noted The President s Column last year that it would all be for nothing if our members are not involved and, noting the obvious, that there are fewer of us and some who cannot be involved, I asked that everyone try to be to volunteer to run programs, to be on committees; just be there for services or events. This has been an area where we have had great success in some ways but not in others. We have had a very active year, with many events and activities that should be the envy of the community. Yet those events occur because of a core group of members who consistently step up to lead. These are the people who see that events occur, and we cannot thank them enough. When it comes to events, our members have been wonderful at regularly participating throughout the year, and I want to thank you all for that. Yet we now really need almost everyone, almost every time, which of course is not possible, so please be here if you can. While perhaps we could live without good events, we would not really be alive. An area of real concern is leadership. We do have a substantial number of members who are willing to step up in many ways, as our officers, Board members, and affiliate leaders to mention the obvious. Yet as the pool gets smaller, we are having a very difficult time getting members to accept the responsibility of leading committees. While we have many members who are generous with their time on committees, we have far fewer who are willing to chair a committee or an event. If we are to survive that must be cured. While taking on responsibility may be challenging, we need people to step up or we will lose our vitality. Please, if you are able and on a committee that lacks a chair, offer to take it on, find a co-chair to share the chore. The satisfaction is its own reward. There is one last area that I feel I must address: minyanim. We have gone from a synagogue that could be counted on to have a an morning and evening, 7 days a week, to one that consistently falls short. We even had to cut out services on Sunday evening and all but one Saturday Mincha/Maariv/ Havdalah service a month. Plus, if we have yahrzeit and want a minyan, we now have to ask in advance and try to bring some of our own people. The Board is strongly of the view that minyanim are vital to our continued existence. I urge each of you, as fervently as I can, to find a way to attend morning or evening minyan at least once or twice a week. Our Ritual Chairs, David and Myron, work very hard. Help them out. Let them know when you can be there. Once again, let us all come together and accept the challenge to work for our cure. If we work as a family we can succeed. Moving on, June and early July have continued to be busy. Our fundraiser in June was successful, both financially and as an enjoyable evening. Unfortunately, although the amounts are not final, we ended the year with a very substantial deficit, over $25,000, so we are in need of additional transfusions. Letters will be going out as we reprise last years "Douse the Deficit" campaign. As I said at installation, please pitch in. If you can provide substantial help, please do, but if you can provide only a little, please do what you can. Send your donations to the office marked "Douse the Deficit." If you would like to make the contribution in honor or in memory of someone, that would be wonderful. I am happy to report that our custodian Arthur is recuperating well from knee replacement surgery. We are looking forward to his successful recovery and having him back before long. In June we had a home Shabbat at the Schulmans, thanks to Syd and Elba. July brought us our first Hawaiian Shabbat Under the Stars, thanks to Chef Mark and his crew once again, and another successful Sisterhood tag sale under the guidance of Myrna Kahan. Looking forward to August we have another first, a Shabbat service at the JCC Swim & Tennis Club. Please plan on being there, and watch for and attend our other events. And finally, please remember, to sustain life, as Beth Hillel needs your leadership and your attendance at minyam. Please commit Till next month. Jackie Page 5 Mid-summer 2014 Av 5774

The Hebrew word "chesed" does not have a precise English equivalent but is probably closest to "loving-kindness." In the Jewish moral tradition, "chesed" is associated with love, giving, and altruism. For congregants who are ill, hospitalized, undergoing rehab, or otherwise in need of prayers and well wishes, our committee members are very generous with their time. We send cards of encouragement; we visit people in hospitals or their homes, rehab, or nursing home facilities; we call to let them know that they are in our thoughts and our prayers. On occasion, we provide meals and an occasional ride. We have challot and small bottles of grape juice to share just before Shabbat. When we offer a chamsa/dove as a "good luck charm" - we see faces light up. We, in return, are blessed by the knowledge that we are providing comfort to those most in need. We can only provide our services if/when we are aware of the need. If you or a loved one wish to be on the receiving end of our services, you may call me (Iris) directly ( ) or leave a message at the synagogue office. Privacy will always be protected - unless you wish to extend the network of well wishers! Iris E. Atkins and Joel Neuwirth Co-Chairs, Chesed Caring Committee Page 9 Mid-summer 2014 Av 5774
