3 NURSERY SCHOOL Spring is on the Horizon Rosanne Mendelowitz Nursery School Director PBJC Nursery School kicked off 2014 in high gear, even with a big snowstorm!! As we move into February, we look forward to one of the highlights of our year the arrival of the baby chicks!! Next month we will share with you how we will be nurturing the very fragile eggs brought to us by the farmers, as we await the hatching of the adorable baby chicks!! We cannot wait for their arrival! February also means a visit from our dentist friend for Dental Health month. It s a short but busy month! The planning for Pine Brook Day Camp is in full swing! We are currently accepting applications for Summer 2014, for children ages 2-5. Registration forms are available through the nursery office. At Pine Brook Day Camp we offer an 8 week program highlighted by fabulous weekly themes and programming that includes water play, arts and crafts, music, games, sports, special events and more! Registration is now open for the school year. We will be offering all of our classes, for 2 year olds through pre-k 4 s, up to 5 full days per week and we will be offering both early care (7:30 9:00 a.m.) and after-care until 6:00 p.m. Now all families will be able to take advantage of our dynamic, highly-regarded nursery programs which are open to children of all faiths. Be sure to share this information with your friends, neighbors and co-workers. Please help us spread the word about our amazing and dynamic nursery program! Be sure to like us on Facebook (Pine Brook Jewish Center Nursery School) and check us out on the PBJC website. We will be sharing all sorts of information, updates and photos. As always, my door is always open to anyone who would like more information about any of our nursery programs. All the best, Rosanne Mendelowitz There is a very special Men s Club sponsored event scheduled for Sunday, February 2nd (and it s not the Superbowl!). It s the World Wide Wrap and this is the tenth year that PBJC will participate. Jewish families around the globe will gather at their synagogues and put on Tefillin to experience the mitzvah and wrap themselves in the words and spirit of holiness. This world-wide event is a fixture in synagogues throughout North America and in Australia, India, Europe, and South America. Each year this tradition grows and we want you to be a part of it. Join us at 9:00 a.m. on February 2nd and be a part of this remarkable tradition. February 2014 Adar I

4 Mary Sheydwasser Religious School Director RELIGIOUS SCHOOL There are certain things you can make happen in the world. And there are certain things you just have to let happen on their own. You can bake a cake. You can build a house. But you can t force friendship. You can t manufacture love. You can t make a magic moment happen. You can only be ready when such things occur. The Bird in the Tree Our theme for our Religious School is forging friendships. We are so accustomed to searching our definitions on Google, Bing, or any other application; Webster s dictionary defines friendship as the state of being friends, a friend being attached to another by affection or esteem. Our Kitah Dalet students have learned this meaning by living and breathing the experience of creating friendships by living together for twenty five hours without any texting, or electronic sources. We spent Shabbat together with prayer, games, and discussion, and most importantly having FUN! Our activities contained trusting one another, Shabbat knowledge, and most importantly, getting to know one another. I don t think that my bags under my eyes will ever disappear but memories were created that I do believe will never be forgotten I am so proud of the accomplishments and skills of our students; may they continue to go from strength to strength! I would be remiss if I didn t mention acknowledge our professional teachers who have worked tirelessly in preparing the children for this evening: Mrs. Amy Bitton, Mrs. Diane Mendelsohn, and Mr. Harvey Jaffe. Thank you to Mrs. Elisa Berger for keeping the students on track! Your dedication and commitment to teaching is truly appreciated! Words cannot possibly express the love and commitment Hershey has to Jewish education. He spends every Shabbaton with us with enthusiasm and passion; Halli Goldsmith, your track record is one hundred percent, you have never missed a Shabbaton; Carly Goldsmith and Joshua Gonzalez, you are both the perfect dugma, the role models for our future generation. Last but certainly not least, thank you parents for entrusting your children to our school, we wouldn t be here without you. Kol Hakavod and Todah rabah! Our Religious School strives to provide a nurturing and comfortable environment where the study of our Jewish identity and traditions are being passed on from one generation to the next. It is very exhilarating to see your children, our students, grow and develop into the fine people that will continue our heritage for many more years to come. Looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and programs. B Shalom, Mary Sheydwasser 4 The Candlestick

5 Hershey Jaffe B Yachad Coordinator B YACHAD HEBREW HIGH B Yachad Travels to the Past By the time you read this article, B yachad, our Hebrew High School Program, will have had a wonderful trip to New York City. Our students choose a large part of their curriculum by completing a questionnaire sent out in the spring with each registration form. The form includes a multitude of offerings giving students some ownership in the course of study. For the second year in a row, their first choice has been the topic of Immigration. They wanted to experience first hand what it must have been like to leave one s environment and often one s family to embark on a new life in a foreign land. With this in mind, we decided to take the students out of the classroom and give them this opportunity. On January 19th, we ventured into New York City and retraced the steps of our forefathers and mothers. Our hope was to help them capture some of the feelings our ancestors felt as they arrived in New York Harbor and subsequently, their living and working conditions where the streets were supposedly paved with gold. Our first stop was the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. We saw how very often a small apartment doubled as a factory. We were surprised to discover few similarities between our past and current lifestyles, while at the same time we realized the value of the simplicity. Some of the students recognized our grandparents challenges having to share beds with siblings and live without televisions, computers or washing machines. They left with an appreciation for all we have today and what their ancestors endured so we could lead very different lifestyles than they did. After a kosher lunch where some enjoyed falafel while others dined on knishes and pizza, we ventured to the west side of the city and boarded a ferry for our tour of Ellis Island. We felt joy and awe as we approached the Statute of Liberty, much as our relatives may have felt when they first saw her standing proudly in the Harbor. We toured the newly opened Ellis Island Grand Hall, a cavernous area where thousands were first processed and then admitted to the United States. We saw remnants of the original luggage and when we closed our eyes, we could almost hear the walls speak. This exciting excursion is a just a small part of what B yachad represents and gives back to the community. It s an encapsulated view of one small part of what PBJC offers our young adults who choose to continue their Jewish education post B nai Mitzvah. Some of the other offerings this year include discussions on the values of Truth, Justice, Pluralism and Inclusion, as well as The Women of the Wall, Gender Equality, Jewish Identity and Love, Dating, Marriage and Sex. As their teacher and the coordinator of the program, I am delighted with their enthusiasm and willingness to dive into every topic. Please watch the Candlestick for information on our weekend in Washington, DC and next year s registration information. Jewish Education is a lifetime commitment and B nai Mitzvah is the starting point, not the goal! February 2014 Adar I

6 B nai Mitzvot Alec Weiker February 15, 2014 Alec Henry Weiker was born during a blizzard on December 29, He has always enjoyed drama and returned home on December 31st in time for the town's fireworks, welcomed by his big brother Ian. We learned early on that Alec is a performer and comedian, with a dry sense of humor and wry observations. Alec is a 7th grader at Briarcliff Middle School in Mountain Lakes. He excels in math, science, and Spanish. He enjoys playing soccer and his trumpet (but not at the same time). Alec is a very talented actor. This year he will play the role of Daddy Warbucks in Briarcliff's production of Annie. Alec loves to travel, which is the theme of his Bar Mitzvah. Over Winter break 2012, we traveled to Israel, where Ian and Alec participated in a symbolic Bar Mitzvah service and read a special Torah parsha. In addition to Israel, he has traveled to Russia, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Holland, and Canada. For his Mitzvah project, Alec has been volunteering with Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey and participated in a clothing drive for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Alec wants to thank everyone who contributed to this exciting day. The congregation is invited to share in the simcha of our Adult B nai Mitzvah class Saturday, March 1, 2014 A Special Kiddush Luncheon will follow Shabbat services. Join us as we wish a Mazel Tov to the B Nai Mitzvah Class: Sheila Basem Nancy Drillings Judy Eisen Karen Kraut Tom Milkowski Kim Moss Meredith Persson Ilene Thailer Michelle Zuckerman Travis Warech, son of PBJC members Gary and Tracey, is playing professional basketball. Warech, a Montville High School graduate, is in Germany since October playing professional basketball with the Pro-A Gotha Rockets. The 22-year-old guard/forward is currently a starter and so far this season has averaged 9.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Now I m actually getting to live (my dream) out and it s pretty awesome to be able to accomplish what I always wanted to do, Trevor said in an interview. Congratulations, Trevor and your entire family. PHOTO COURTESY Gleichmar/Oettinger Rockets Gotha) 6 The Candlestick
