The Haggadah, one of the best known, and most beloved of Jewish texts, recounts the story of the Jewish people as they left Egypt and became a nation. Interestingly, during the 20 th Century, more editions of the Haggadah were published than in all the preceding centuries. The tumultuous and dispersed lives of the Jewish people, particularly during the 20 th Century are reflected in the myriad of Haggadot. At the beginning of the century, many of the Haggadot were printed in Eastern Europe - in Warsaw and Vilna, and in central Europe - Berlin, Vienna and Budapest. In the aftermath of the Holocaust Haggadot were produced for use by the survivors in the DP camps, and then, as the century progressed and the Jewish population crossed continents, they were increasingly printed in New York, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and South America. Matza companies used Haggadot to merchandise their wares, Haggadot were published for the military and for children and non-traditional Haggadot emerged, geared for secular kibbutzim, women s groups and campaigners on behalf of Soviet Jewry. The artwork was varied reflecting artistic trends and using symbolic imagery. Yiddish, Arabic and Ladino translations become increasingly replaced by translations of the Haggadah into English, French and towards the latter part of the 20 th century into Russian and Amharic. Fishburn Books is delighted to present 100 Haggadot from the 20 th Century over the next few days eventually, there should be one Haggadah for each year of the 20 th Century. Here is the first group of 20 Haggadot. Yudlov 2293 [16634] Haggadah Shel Pesach Imre Esh. Podgorze (near Krakow), cm, more recent cloth, 96 pp. Text in Hebrew. Rabbi Meir Eisenstadter ( ) was one of the great Talmudists of the first half of the 19 th Century. This is an example of a Haggadah with traditional rabbinic commentaries. 3 1922. Haggadah Shel Pesach. London, Shapiro Vallentine, Shapiro Vallentine was a Jewish publisher and bookseller in London. They published a number of Haggadot - mostly cheap ones that could be bought in multiple copies for all the attendees at the Seder. This one has a Yiddish translation. This is the first Haggadah issued under the Shapiro Vallentine imprint. Yudlov Not in Lehmann or Yaari 60

Paris, Les Textes Sacres, Leather spine with raised bands and gilt title over paper covered boards. Limited edition. No 293 of Yudlov There are 4 highly distinctive colour illustrations by the French artist Janine Aghion. Some foxing to title page, otherwise a very good copy. The text is in Hebrew and French. The translation was done by Edmond Fleg ( ) [16630] 395

5 1927. Kredel, Fritz. Offenbacher Haggadah. Offenbach, Verlag des Herausgebers Doktor Guggenheim, Original wrappers, 30 cm, 97 pp, illustrated, the spine is torn. Text in German with some Hebrew. Copy no. 60 of the limited edition of 300 copies. Printed in two colours on Zerkatt Butten paper including 12 hand-coloured illustration pages by the artist. Curiously, the section Leshana Haba Beyerushalayim (Next in Jerusalem ) in the German part (page 79) Leschana habaah be-worms am rhein. Das nachte Jahr in Worms, unserer heimat [Next year in Worms. 6 1930. Guttman, Nachum. - Haggadah Shel Pesach. Tel Aviv, Omanut, Original stylized Bezalel binding with decorative metallic plate with a scene of Jews praying at the Western Wall. The illustrations are by Nachum Guttman ( ) who was one of the Bezalel artists and one of the most important artists of the Yishuv and the early State of Israel who helped pioneer a distinctively Israeli style. Yudlov [16642] Weiss, Yekutiel. - Haggadat Pesach. Buenos Aires, Argentina, This is the 2 nd Haggadah to be printed in South America. It was regarded as the first till a 1919 edition was discovered in the YIVO library. Yudlov Yerushalmi notes that the preface ends with the hope to come to Zion and Jerusalem speedily and in or days. London, Conrad s Fine Art Publishing Company, Gilt stamped morocco printed on special paper, all edges gilt, a limited edition of 550 copies, 29cm, [1], 30, [1], 45, [1] Yudlov An elaborate Haggadah in which the publishers preface says It was with a deep sense of responsibility to suffering humanity in all parts of the world that we embarked on the production of this deluxe edition of the Passover Haggadah. The work was commenced in 1942, when the WW2 was at its height, with an unshakeable belief in the triumph of the free peoples of the world over tyrants, and has been completed while the nations are still struggling to achieve that harmony which should lead to a fuller understanding between all mankind. Stockholm, Kungl. Boktryckeriet, P A Norstedt & Söner, Original paper covered boards, cloth backstrip, 23cm, 71 pp. In Hebrew and Swedish. With musical scores by Felix Saul. A little wrinkling to a few pages at top edge, (a little damp?) and a little age toning, a couple of marks to covers, and previous owners name on front free endpaper. Otherwise overall good condition, with a little wear on lower edge. The Hebrew text is after Bamberger's edition from Frankfurt Am Main (1933). Illustrated by Stanislaus Bender. [16643] 100 Yerushalmi Haarabanut Hatzvait Hareishit (The Army Rabbinate) Haggadah L'Shaat Charum [Haggadah for Use in a State of Emergency] Haarabanut Hatzvait Hareishit (The Army Rabbinate), Original wrappers. 24cm, unpaginated. This is first specially abbreviated Haggadah for the use of soldiers on patrols, and on guard duty at the borders, sitting in ambush etc. There is a preface by Rabbi Shlomo Goren outlining several Halachot regarding the usage of this Haggadah. The Haggadah has been stripped down to the minimum required for the Haggadah. [16486] Rakusen s Passover Haggadah. London, The Furnival Press, Original wrappers, 22cm, 47 pp. This is probably the most uncommon of the Rakusen s Haggadot. [16641] 45

The text of the Haggadah is colour coded to show the different historical periods that particular texts are from. There are extensive marginal notes providing sources for each phrase.
