1 FISHBURN BOOKS February 2015 JUDAICA LIST PH: FAX: INTERESTING ITEMS 1. ROBERTS, DAVID THE HOLY LAND, SYRIA, IDUMEA, ARABIA, EGYPT & NUBIA. After lithographs by Louis Haghe from drawings made on the spot by David Roberts R.A. with Historical Descriptions by the Rev. George Croly, LL.D.[and William Brockedon, F.R.S] London Day & Son First quarto edition, 29.2 x 20.5cm. Six volumes bound in three physical volumes with 250 tinted lithographed plates, including frontispiece portrait in Volume I, title-pages, and 2 maps (the maps are not tinted). Plates have the original tissue guards. David Roberts ( ) had established himself as a topographical artist of note when in 1838 he planned a visit to the Near East. He departed in August 1839 for Egypt and spent the rest of the year visiting numerous tombs and sites in and around Cairo. Early the following year
2 he set out for the Holy Land visiting Suez, Mount Sinai, and Petra on the way. He spent several months visiting Biblical sites throughout Palestine including a considerable period in Jerusalem. He returned to England at the end of The three volumes have been rebacked, the spines are leather with gilt titles and decorations. The boards are cloth. All edges are gilt. Some foxing throughout. This is the quarto edition of the gargantuan folio edition of the same title from which the plates were photographically reduced in size. In the words of one critic, The fidelity of his accurate pencil, his skilful adherence to truth of costume and surroundings, his attention to characteristic effect in architecture and landscape, won immediate recognition and praise. 8 The Haggadah with Geismar s illustrations was initially published in Hebrew. In 1928, two separate bilingual editions one in German, and one in Dutch - with the original text and a translation were published. Geismar s early style has been characterized as minimalist and expressionistic. His Haggadah illustrations are marked by bold typography, radically simplified lines, freedom of treatment of traditional themes (e.g., the illustration for the song Had Gadya) and humour (the wicked son as a mocker who thumbs his nose at the wise one; the Plagues of Egypt; a child overcome by the wine and festivities at the end of the seder banquet, etc.). Geismar s optimistic logo can be seen at the end of the book: a little bird chirping in a tree next to an open cage, with the Hebrew initials Aleph Gimel = Otto Geismar.
